This one's a bit of a shot in the dark, but I was thinking...
A really long while back, I remember hearing about Notch wanting to implement a sort of 'quest' system to Minecraft. The idea was, of course, scrapped, and I kinda wanted to build a suggestion off of that without making the game feels too RPG-ish. So my idea was to build upon the mobs we already had. I decided to pick skeletons, as they seemed to be the 'smartest' and most human of the bunch. Zombies didn't cut it since zombies typically don't use their brians.... Instead they just eat them!
With that aside, of course not all Skeletons would be neutral. This would remove a big threat to the game. Skeletons themselves will be the same, however now there will be a rare, neutral 'quest' Skeleton. These skeletons will look slightly different from normal skeletons and of course, they won't attack you on the spot. Instead they seek out a bit of assistance, which will be explained deeper later on.
First off, I'd like to get their spawning conditions out of the way:
The way these mobs spawn are similar to hostile mobs, but also a lot different. First off, they spawn much more rarely. To put their spawn rates in perspective, you should only see around 1-2 every 2-3 nights, maybe 2-3 if you constantly explore through the night. They also do not spawn in groups. Instead they spawn by themselves.
They will despawn like most hostiles if the Player gets too far and/or if it is day time. The special thing about their despawning rules is that, if it is nighttime, they won't despawn until 5 minutes after spawning, and are less likely to despawn in general until dawn strikes. This makes it easier for players to finish the quest without worrying about the dear skeleton despawning while they're retrieving items.
Their despawning rates, however will drastically increase after their quest is complete.
Anyways, now that we got that out of the way, here's the interesting part... The actual suggestion themselves.
Neutral Skeletons
These Skeletons will have different short tasks you can do. The quests are totally optional, and do not increase your progression in the game. They are only there for you to do for fun and receive a little reward. There will also be Wither Skeleton variants of these special mobs.
Each quest will give out a reward. Unless specified, the quests will give out stackable items in groups of 2-6. You receive one non-stackable item if it cannot be stacked, non-stackable items are also less likely to be given out.
Now, onto what the quests actually are:
Normal Skeletons
1st Quest: Repair the skeleton's limbs.
This Skeleton will be missing either an arm, or a leg. Rarely even both! You can repair the leg by either throwing bones at them, or right clicking them with bones in hand. Each bone will be picked up, and after 3-7 bones, their limb will be repaired. Once all their limbs are fixed, you will be rewarded.
Reward: You can either receive some arrows, a bow, or some nature related item such as seeds, flowers or saplings.
2nd Quest: Give the skeleton a helmet for sun protection.
This is the only quest Skeleton where their despawn rates aren't affected by the day. Simply throw a helmet at one hiding in the shade, and it will equip it. Be warned, you cannot get this helmet back, even by killing the Skeleton!
Reward: The reward for this quest depends on the tier of helmet you gave them. Pumpkins and mob heads also give their own rewards.
Leather Helmet: Coal, arrows, or a Bow
Chain mail Helmet: Coal, Arrows, a Bow, or iron ingots (2-4)
Iron Helmet: Iron Ingots (2-4), Bow, Arrows, or an enchanted book (Non-treasure enchantments, with all enchantments capped at level II), Golden
Gold Helmet: Gold Ingots (2-4), Gold Nuggets (5-16), Enchanted book (Up to level III, can be treasure enchantments), Golden Apple (25% chance to be enchanted)
Diamond Helmet:Diamond (2-3), Iron Ingot (3-6), Golden apple (50% chance to be enchanted)
Pumpkin:Pumpkin seeds or a Jack-O-Lantern during Halloween. (Will also accept Jack-O-Lanterns during Halloween)
Creeper Head: Gunpowder (5-17) and 1 TNT
Zombie Head:Rotten Flesh (6-15) and either a slightly damaged Iron Shovel, Axe or Sword
Skeleton Head:Bones (8-12), a bow, and arrows (12-22)
Player Head: An Apple if Notch's head, Mojang's Logo for any other employee of Mojang, A note block if C418's head, If anyone else's head then you will receive cake. (Intended to be an Easter egg since Player Heads are unobtainable)
3rd Quest: Retrieve a Spider and form a Spider jockey
This Skeleton will be holding a lead in their off-hand. To complete this quest, you must lure a Spider towards the Skeleton. Once the Skeleton is close enough to the Spider, he will hop on the Spider. The Spider will then become neutral to you.
Reward: Either Bones, Lead (1-2) or Slimeballs.
4th Quest: Guard from attackers.
Not all mobs get along, right? This quest Skeleton will spawn with a group of either 2-3 other Skeletons, Zombies or Spiders that are naturally hostile towards it. The Skeleton will be fleeing the hoard of mobs attacking it, and is the only Skeleton that won't retaliate when attacked by a player (Instead will flee). To complete this quest, you must kill all the attackers.
Reward: Coal, Iron Ingots, Gold nuggets (6-12), Arrows, a Bow, or rarely a Golden Apple (25% chance Enchanted variant)
Wither Skeletons
1st Quest: Repair their limbs.
This is the same as above, but instead of just bones, they will also require a bit of coal (2-4 coal per limb). When their limb is initially repaired, it will appear white and out of place. The player will not be granted any reward until it is the right color.
Reward: Bones, a stone sword, or gold nuggets (2-8)
2nd Quest: Retrieve a stone sword
This Skeleton has lost their Stone Sword. They will appear without a weapon, and if you give them a stone sword, they will reward you. They are also biased and will only accept stone swords to keep in sync with their brothers and sisters.
Reward: Coal, gold nuggets (2-6) or bones
3rd Quest: Retrieve Magma Cream
Skeletons usually aren't immune to lava, but Wither Skeletons have become smart enough to brew potions of Fire Resistance for themselves. This Skeleton, however cannot find any Magma cream. Because of this, he can actually burn in the day and in lava/fire. He will be holding Nether Warts in his off-hand, and after giving him 1-2 Magma Creams, you will receive your reward.
Reward: Blaze Powder (1-3), Coal, Stone Sword, or Fire Resistance Potion (Rarely)
... And that pretty much sums up this suggestion. A rare spawning neutral skeleton that has a little quest you can do.
When making this suggestion, I always wondered why Skeletons hated you. Other mobs such as Zombies or Creepers make sense, as it could just be instinct taking over. But skeletons in non-generic-RPG games are usually shown to be able to use a mind like normal beings, so what's the deal with every Skeleton suddenly holding a grudge towards you? I felt it would be okay if some were neutral towards you, hence the creation of this suggestion.
If there is something you don't like about the suggestion, be it that something seems out of place, the items are over-powered, or you simply just don't like it, please give me some feedback so I can improve this suggestion.
Not a bad idea. I wouldn't mind if the villagers or possibly witches could give quests and rewards for completion as well. Perhaps down the line something like this will be implemented, but maybe there should be a box to tick when creating or loading a world. This way you could either play with or without the quest system.
I like the idea of this mob and think that it might be good. The quests are a bit of something to talk about though. I'll help you add some more of them as I think 3 quests is not enough for a Wither Skeleton.
Quest #4 (Wither Skeleton).
The wither skeleton would like to be re-united with his brothers and sisters! (this skeleton should spawn alone, am i right?) He will follow you until you find atleast 4 wither skeletons. As a reward he will give you one of his siblings spare sword and will also give you some netherwart for you to farm...
I'm sorry if that sounds extremely bad or generally is bad...
All in all, this would be a nice way to get rewards and have some fun in Minecraft, support.
I considered something similar (I actually had quite a few more ideas for quests, but I scrapped them while writing up the post), and I might have to do something with spawning, such as neutral wither skeletons spawning outside of Nether Fortresses (With you having to lead them to it), though a few issues arise with this.
One: I'm sure players would be annoyed if you're wandering around and a Skeleton just follows you everywhere you go.
Two: If they spawn inside fortresses, there's a high chance, even despite their low spawn rates, that they'll always be in a group (Also vice versa with a low chance of a group of that many Wither Skeletons attacking you)
Three: The other Skeletons would have to become neutral, too. Otherwise you'll have a skeleton following you while the quest goal is viciously murdering you. And then the system could be abused to where you auto-tame skeletons for easier killing.
The idea itself isn't all that bad, and is pretty interesting, and I would like to add something similar, but right now there are quite a few obsticals, and I don't want to add too much such as "Right click to make me follow you" or anything of the sort, as I don't want this to lean too much to where it starts feeling like a generic RPG quest system where you click on the quest giver to accept it.

I originally planned to expand to different mobs, Villagers certainly were my first considered. Witch quests was an interesting thought, too (Like I said, I did plan on letting most hostiles have quest variants), however I decided on just skeletons for simplicity. Villagers already have trading, and Witches, while would fit the job, and certainly be a bit interesting depending on how I played my cards, just didn't seem right. Maybe I simply thought they were too close to villagers, heh.
As for it being optional, I don't feel this needs it's own option. The spawn rates are quite rare, and they are completely ignorable, and have absolutely no impact on gameplay at all if ignored. You can fight them like any other mob, as most of them will retaliate back, and they don't obscure your views with chat bubbles blurting out "Hey! Listen!" or anything. Just little visual things. Maybe give them their own NBT tag so they can be filtered by commands, so if you really wanted to, you could just kill them all as soon as they spawned (Or maybe even do a bit more with them).
Because you are a nice forum user and you love to read!
Also you didn't have to read all of it, just the part that got my points across. I guess I could of made that a bit less confusing or just re-summarized it. Oh well.
This still comes out to being a quest/reward thing, which isn't very Minecraftish. And just because this quest isn't necessary, doesn't change that. Sorry, no support. Repairing a skeleton or anything like that isn't a bad idea, just not in the form of a quest system.

Yeah, I it's fine. Like I said, it was a kinda shot in the dark. Though I'm not exactly sure where I stated that it being not necessary made it alright, unless you were referring to my reply to Dr_Hax which wasn't exactly what I meant.(I meant that, say if you did feel it'd fit, it wouldn't really be big enough for it's own option such as generated structures have and what not)
Do you think there's any way that I can change it up to make it less like that and make this suggestion fit better?
Actually... I really, really like this!
The idea of small quests, without being too much like an RPG is AMAZING to me, and the way you did it was just right! Talking to the skeleton would have been too much, but instead its just a small sign on them, indicating what they want. I love it! And since they will retaliate if attacked, its not like you will even notice the fact that its not a normal mob unless you are looking for the signs of it.
That brings me to the hat skeleton... I think it could use a separate way to identify it, aside from it not attacking and the fact that it sits in the shade, because that's what all skeletons do in the sun, is hide in the shade, and it not attacking could just be a bit of lag or something. Perhaps it should constantly or occasionally be looking up, like it is afraid of the sun?
I do think perhaps a few more mobs could do with quests as well, even zombies and creepers, though a significantly less amount of them would be available for this kind of thing, and with fewer quests overall. And if you don't do those here, then where/who will do them? I would, but if it were two separate threads it might be a bit confusing, and they might not match up well overall. Just a thought, cause I really would like to see other mob "miniquests" as well If you decide to add them, I have a few ideas that might work.

I actually written down the idea of them looking at the sun when planning/pre-writing this thread, I'm not sure why I didn't add that to the actual thread. But they are noticable, as I stated that they looked slightly different in appearance (Like green eyes or something for example). I guess I could make up a picture later on to show that off.

This was the original idea, for most hostiles to have neutral variants, but I scrapped this idea for reasons either mentioned above or in the thread. A zombie doesn't really fit because... Well... It's a zombie. They just want some brains to munch on. Creepers are more of a mob that likes to stay hidden, and it kinda doesn't make sense there. Spiders are more of an instinct mob, Endermen could fit in, but they already play a nice role of both having materials to get you to the End and being in the End. Witches also could work, but I simply didn't really like the idea of that. Villagers also already have trading, they've already have their purpose.
As for the Nether mobs, I wanted quests to be available in the Overworld, but Skeletons work as a double bonus because they can be found both in the over world and in the Nether. So that leans me towards them a bit more.
I think the idea of most hostiles having neutral variants would be nice, I just feel it would be a bit out of place that a zombie is wanting you to give it a potato or something instead of letting it's craving take over and biting off your fingers. Just for an example.
Well I can see what you mean there, for most of them. I guess that I personally have always thought that there is at least a few oddballs in every species. For the zombies, maybe there are a few out there that resist the urge to eat you, but still want raw meat (because that is what they can digest), so you feed them raw chicken or raw beef for the quest.
Or for creepers, there is one that doesn't want to explode, he wants to see the world.. He doesn't see the point in killing himself to try and kill you. So maybe he would be found at the edge of oceans, wandering on the beach, and if you plcae a boat down, he will hop in and drift away.
For Endermen, maybe every single Enderman would be a quest Enderman. They act exactly the same, but they have a special entity tag or something, because every Enderman is searching, searching for a very specific block. It could be literally any block, or flower, or plant, but when they find it, they become totally passive, they pick up the block, and teleport away, leaving the reward in its place. (Enderpearl, or Eye of ender, or whatever)
You're right about the spiders though, I just can't see one of them having a quest for you...

I don't know, to me it just seems a little too specific (what I mean by that is the way that the skeletons ask you for stuff when in Minecraft nothing really has a personality) for Minecraft. I also think it doesn't really fit with skeletons (or any hostile mob for that matter), because, in my opinion, all skeletons should be hostile. It adds some "story" to a game that was never meant to have a story. It's not a bad idea, I just don't think it really fits in Minecraft.

Sorry for really late reply.
I can kinda see what you mean. Though I feel mobs all tend to have their own little personalities. (Like, for example, spiders are my absolute best friends that are just absolutely derpy and love to spin and hop around in circles for absolutely no reason) But I guess it varies from person to person and on their experience with the game. Skeletons, I feel is just that kinda "Cool guy" or whatever, being calm all around. I don't know, this probably all sounds extremely goofy or dumb.
I love it! It adds a bit of silliness into the game, along with some small rewards, without really affecting the overall feel!
One small change to suggest, perhaps the guarding quest (#4) could be wolves rather than random other enemies (because wolves and skeletons are already enemies). All the chasing wolves would either have to be killed or tamed and forced to sit in order to complete the quest.

I thought about that, but I kinda don't want to do that, as I'm sure lots of players wouldn't want to go around slaughtering wolves. I already see many Youtubers and other players in general treating them like real dogs (Not that it's exactly a bad thing, I kinda do this myself) and never wanting to harm them (And getting a bit sad when they do get harmed). Having to tame them would also be a bit annoying as eventually they'd all add up (Or even a bit too powerful).
I like where you're going with this, though I'm still 'iffy' on a few tiny bits. But those 'bits' are just based off of how I perceive certain mobs and other personal opinions!
Other than that, I support! I think it would be cool to add in a tiny occasional quest here and there for fun.

I can see that, but it's also an idea partly for a quest system.
I considered something similar (I actually had quite a few more ideas for quests, but I scrapped them while writing up the post), and I might have to do something with spawning, such as neutral wither skeletons spawning outside of Nether Fortresses (With you having to lead them to it), though a few issues arise with this.

Don't forget that in order to tame them you'd have to use bones.
