face it, you've all done it; you mined so much ores that you need multiple furnaces to get the job done quickly. then space is a concern, so you dig out a space dedicated to smelting; a room with the ENTIRE WALLS made of furnaces doing multiple jobs... what if you could do all that in one block?
so here is my suggestion: a leveling system with furnaces; meaning said furnace can be re-crafted again and again, making it better each step. This can go about many ways, here is what I would think is probable:
The Stove is what would be crafted from the current recipe. The Stove is the only "smelter" capable of cooking food, making it useful to carry around everywhere. The Stove can be recrafted again:
into a stronger Level Two furnace that loses its ability to cook in exchange for the ability to smelt. Level Two is the furnace that we know about. What if you wanted it to be more efficient? Replace the above craft with the Level Two furnace and to make a Level 3 Furnace. This furnace can smelt TWO ores for half price (you can smelt 2 full stacks of ores with only 8 coal). if there are other ores implemented, they can be smelted into alloys that do different things.
I know what you are thinking; yes, you can re-craft the Level 3 furnace. but there are two ways to do this: or :Diamond:. Either way, you get a Level 4 Furnace. However, furnaces and furnaces are different: one is required for smelting a powerful alloy, and the other can repair items.
= Level 3 Furnace
This furnace can smelt 3 ores at once, and can smelt and into a powerful, Unnamed alloy. this alloy makes the tool crafted effective as iron, fast as gold, and durable as diamond (gold tools mine faster than diamond). However, unlike other tools, Unnamed Alloy tools have an alt-fire, a power attack with added benefits, but reduces its durability to 1. it's sad I know, but the benefits are worth it:
Sword: Instant Kill
Hoe: Transforms the target block into a :Water:, and tills a 9x9 square around it.
Shovel: 4 x resource multiplier (dig one :sand:, get 4)
Axe: completely destroys the tree with a 2x resource multiplier
Pickaxe: Breaks a 5x5 cube of material, any ores busted become usable ingots
so you execute the power attack, and now your tool is almost busted. NOT TO WORRY! remember that Level Three Furnace? just add :Diamond::
Now you have a pimp furnace that... does what the Level 3 Furnace does... Or does it? see that almost broke tool in your hand? Toss it in there, and it's BRAND NEW! The Diamond furnace can smelt your near borked tools as if they were as good as new! Armor got busted by creepers? toss them in there as well! They will be new too! only downside? you must use the material involved in crafting the weapon for fuel, and you cant repair wood or stone in this method
Summary:
A tier based Furnace system with the following abilities:
Level 1: only cook food
Level 2: only smelt ores
Level 3: can smelt 2 ores at once, may be possible to create alloys
Level 4 Gold: Can smelt 3 ores at once, required for Unnamed Alloy
Level 4 Diamond: Smelts 2 ores at once, repairs armor and weapons
Alloy Tools: durability, effectiveness, speed. All alloy tools have power-attacks activated by right click
Sword: Instant Kill
Hoe: Instant Farm
Shovel: 4x multiplier
Axe: Instantly destroys a tree, with 2x multiplier
Pickaxe: Faster mining

Wow man, you clearly put alot of thought into this one!
Overall, your ideas sound great, my main problem would be the alloy pickaxe being able to mine bedrock. While it would be REALLY cool to have an adminium castle, if we could break the bedrock, we might break a hole into the void, which would suck. How about make it mine a cube area around where you clicked, and instantly gather said cube (would be GREAT for obsidian). Really like the thought of a diamond smelter that repairs your stuff. I think that this could actually work, if someone with modding experience tried to pull it off.
Really nice idea man!
PS: You could call the alloy platinum or titanium (I know they're not alloys, they just sound cool!)
PPS: Maybe even call it crystal!

Pretty much what I was going to say.
And yeah, change the pick alt-attack. Either a cube like he said or I was thinking a straight line 9 blocks away.
There are actually so many holes in this that I can't explain them all. I understand the different furnace types, but making a furnace that can repair items will remove the need to go into caves, taking away the first part of the name of the game, and some of the second. It IS minecraft after all. And power attacks? Why? They are overpowered, an instant kill takes away from the adrenaline involved, mining bedrock opens the void, resource multipliers make that feel that you need something more not there. It essentially ruins the game. Minecraft is 4 things:
Building
Digging
Adventuring
Surviving and Thriving (They are somewhat one thing)
If you take away most of those, then you take away what makes minecraft fun. Plus can you imagine how pissed everyone would be if someone crafts one of those swords and oneshots you in an SMP server every time you exit spawn?
I had doubts about the pick's powerattack as well, but it was all i could come up with. the power attacks are not spammable, as it reduces durability to 1. attempting it again would break it. thanks for the suggestions, making changes now
Edit: changes made. have another look

Say you take a gold sword, it only has 33 uses. Its not that bad >_> its in fact more usefull for a oneshot than it is for fighting
I was toying with an instane kill weapon. Like smelting a Diamond Sword in a furnace with netherrock and having a 30% chance of receiving a "Netherblade", which would perform an instant kill but would break after that kill. If the recipe fails, you lose your sword. Perhaps also iron being smeltable but with a very low chance. Also see my "purpose of the nether" thread that I recently posted
I don't feel that this suggested change would encourage players to seek out new areas and materials, nor do I feel that it would benefit design of forts in any other way than compression - and let's face it, small forts aren't cool.
Minecraft's entire system is built on a need/want ratio of materials and resources that have value due to their relative rarities. Your suggestion would destroy that completely.
No diamonds for you. In fact, I'm sending creepers to destroy your diamond storage.
I'm actually working on a mod that has the same approach as what you guys are talking about. The approach of the mod is to pretty much enhance the mining part of minecraft using real-life based items, such as alloys and blast furnaces. I also plan on adding other mining type stuff, such as a torch that you can throw (great for lighting up areas) and mining tnt (not as powerful but has more drops than regular tnt).
Currently I've just finished decoding the code for a block called a "Bio Carbonizer" that burns carbon-based items (mainly food, seeds, and sapplings) to have a 1/12 chance of making "coke", which is a new fuel that's 4 times more efficient than coal. I grew tired of having stacks of seeds and stuff and used most of my coal on torches and got the idea for "coke" that way.
Before I make an alpha release, I plan on adding a furnace block called a "Blast Furnace" that smelts two items to create alloys, such as steel and carbon steel (yes they are different alloys). I'm thinking of calling the mod "Mining+" after all of the other "+" mods out there.

I would however like to see a pick that would mine out a 3x3 block in front of me. Make it a whole lot easier to make exploratory shafts.
