Nice thoughts but I don’t really see the point to them.
1 VERY, and I do mean VERY, few people would take the time, resources, and energy to climb a mountain that high. Why? It would be pointless! You can’t really build, you can’t really see much, and outside the “I DID IT” factor there is really no reason. I would like to see higher maps as well but I think 512 is MORE than good enough, and 256 would be just right.
2 This is minecraft. As I see it, Notch has kept things (buildings, weapons, clothing) VERY simple and VERY dark ages. This is all for good reason- do you have any idea the skills/tools/time one would need to build an air tank? I mean REALLY? You didn’t see Tom Hanks building a scuba set or submarine in “Castaway.” He didn’t have the tools, skills or resources! Now I’m all up for SIMPLE underwater assistance, say a snorkel made out of bamboo/sugarcane for instance, that when equipped in the helmet space would let you go 2 to 3 block underwater.
3 I like the idea of hot air balloons, it would be nice to have a SIMPLE way to fly around the world. However, a motor is way overboard. It would be epic to have a very basic (like a boat/minecart) air balloon, but nothing too silly or unreal. Remember, Minecraft is a Horror Survival Gilligans-Island-without-the-coconut-radios and not a James Bond movie (That’s what mods like ‘airplanes’ are for!)
4 I like the sunken ships idea, and maybe an underwater dungeon in them would be epic. A few, 3 or so, coral reef blocks would be cool too, but again nothing too silly or complex.
I think I want to see more story and quest stuff in Minecraft rather than more crap to build/explore. Here are a few of my ideas:
1 Ruins - I LOVE the ruined forts found all over Oblivion. I always thought it would be cool to be able to claim one and fix it up. I also like the tombs that were scattered across the map in Morrowind, crypts and tombs would be awesome too!
2 I have to say that one of my favorite games of all time was Morrowind. There were 3 main quests and TONS of side quests. I would LOVE to see the same in Minecraft. Guilds/factions you could join would ROCK too.
3 Magic- I think the Aether mod has really got something. I love the idea of enchanting stuff and the magic rings and amulet are pretty epic. I think Alchemy would be a great edition to make health and other potions.
4 MONEY, MONEY, MONEY- Or a barter system. It would be nice to have the option to buy/sell rather than mine and explore, if the player chose to play that way.
5 QUESTS!!!! I want to have things to do if I choose, like take meds to a far off town, go on a spiritual quest for enlightenment, go steal a sword out of a tomb, and find one of a kind armor and weapons.
6 Transport- Like in Morrowind, it would be nice to have a few HUGE main towns with boats/bugs/something you could use to go to other places/towns. It would cost you, of course , so a good horse to ride if you didn’t what to pay would be cool too.
7 Deities and other useless sods. Some good, some not. Who you follow and who you please could affect every aspect of your game play.
I personally want to see minecraft become a GAME that has a sandbox, not a SANDBOX with a bit of a game. Don’t get me wrong- I LOVE the sandbox build and explore part but stuff to do accomplish would be nice too. (More than ‘Achievement: You punched a tree!) You can really only build and explore so much, but by the same coin it’s nice to take a break from questing to build or mine.
I like the ideas of almost everything, except "Wreakstone", because that is below -2000 or something, it should be something super awesome. Wreakstone is just,... Dumb. Sorry, but the closer to Minecraftia's core you get, there should be "something" cool! *Begin naming new ores that are better than diamond or have special purposes in new recipes.*
I like thin air, I like temperature: I don't like how you deal with them. Sure air tanks, sure water and coolants. Timing...? There's not enough time in between. Go time yourself for 2 minecraft days, digging "Down!" to bedrock. Then go up 10 levels. Dig in any direction for 200 blocks. Just 200. See how long it'll take. There are not many caves, or if you do find one, skip it. You have to mine out every block yourself. It should take you about 2 1/2 Minecraft days "at least". At most? 3. But not enough time according to your rulings of temperature to get anything good.
If the time between these "ticks of death" decreased, I'd have no problem for survival mode. But if this was made just for height...! And for creative mode! WOO!
Quite a few interesting idea's there, but you need to remember MINECRAFT IS A SANDBOX/SURVIVAL GAME, NOT AN RPG. (Although I love the idea of being able to chose to play as a sandbox game, a survival game, or an RPG.)
Edit: I think at the moment Terraria is definitely taking over Minecraft for the amount of stuff there is to do. Minecraft needs to catch up.

Yes, Terraria has more "stuff", but its 2D and failzors. *Terraria Rant real quick* You can't "recreate" anything that has been imagined, like in books or movies. It is a simple "pixel-art" game, where you may have more to make, but you have less creation to do. I've played it before. I didn't give it a high score. *End quick rant.*
You are correct that Minecraft is a Sandbox and Survival game. It even has HARDCORE now! But might not want to add the entire RPG element, unless he's got enough support. EVEN IF IT WAS ADDED: I would NOT suggest that it is included in Survival or Creative (and hardcore) but have separate coding and be included only in GAMEMODE 3 (RPG mode).
I've been following this for awhile and I haven't seen much progress...so I have to ask: Will this actually be done? I know it's going to take some doing, but I've heard no real updates.

The problem here is that you just went way the hell over the top. Three thousand block high mountains are just stupid. They would be tens of thousands of units across, and that would be several hours of digging through a damn mountain. I just can't support this. Perhaps thin air could play an effect for aircraft, and some of the idea is sound, but the limits you put are just absurd.
Also it would had HUGE AMOUTS OF LAG if it lags enough already then one chunck would make around 60000 blocks or MORE
I honestly really, really like the ideas posted in the thread (although I don't like the torpedo gun. Maybe a harpoon gun or just a harpoon?). Perhaps some sort of new metal could spawn only on the peaks of mountains?
The only problem I can see is that it would cause lag generating mountains. While the mountains are generated in cubes, looking at a mountain would cause all of the cubes you can see to generate, meaning lag. I think.

Minecraft makes me feel like I'm three. Playing with blocks and afraid of the dark.
There's just too much to it.... The mountains and altitude.... ugh. It would make any mountain just like entering a whole new dimension. Also, the breathing apparatuses seem somewhat, I don't know, silly. Your chunk idea is darned good, however. I know you put a lot of time into it, and I'm sorry I can't support this.
I'm torn on this. The realism is nice, but the increased height is a problem. Instead of increasing the current chunk size, why not place an extra chunk above the other ones.
