Recently, I was thinking that redstone could be used in something more, I'm not really a redstone mechanic, and other than that, redstone is just used for compasses and clocks.
As a solution to this dilemma, I present to you, REDSTONE CRYSTALS!
Redstone tools:
Redstone dust could be smelted in a furnace to create redstone crystals! In tools, their durability would be higher than stone, but lower than iron, but tools are not the important part.
Redstone armor would provide very little protection, however, if a creature attacks or touches you, they are hurt by the redstone current in your armor! The protection would be the same as leather, but the damage done to interfering mobs would be equal to a wooden sword and would have a small blow-back effect like normal swords give. They would be crafted like normal armor but with redstone crystals.
Redstone swords are as weak in durability as a wooden sword, but they are as strong as iron against mobs! They are made with redstone crystals.

Redstone arrows give twice the damage of a regular arrow over 10 seconds, if you miss and hit something else, if a mob walks over or near the arrow, they are given the damage of a regular arrow and the arrow disappears from the ground. Redstone arrows are crafted like normal arrows but with a redstone crystal at the top instead of flint.

Redstone crystals would be far more appropriate. Change redstone torches to require a redstone crystal, so that one pile of redstone "wiring" dust isn't enough to make a redstone "power source" torch.
Ugly idea the way you stated it, but change the words a little and it is on
