Alright, I've searched this title and nothing came up for the last 30 days or so; no recent redundancy. Cool, a possible original idea. Anyway, I'll cut to the chase here.
The Basics
So far, the only magic in the Minecraft Vanilla game is enchantment, and, as the death message says when being killed by a witch, potions. (i.e.: TheColeTrain829 was killed by witch by magic.)Yes, witches are not very powerful with the right gear, but other players can be. In Minecraft Vanilla, there is no enchantment or potion of which that can reduce magical damage, and I am suggesting an armor enchantment, applicable to Helmets, Chestplates, Leggings, and Boots. The Magic Resistance enchantment is a protection enchantment that reduces incoming damage from splash potions, harmful normal potions, and enchantment damage like Sharpness and Power. A HP-reducing attack that was lessened by Magic Resistance would have no extra reduction in the armor's durability points, unlike the Thorns enchantment. Magic Resistance would be allowed to have an enchantment level up to IV, similar to all other protection enchantments. Magic Resistance IV and III, however, can only be applied to armor via Anvil combination or a Level 30 Enchantment on the enchanting table (only accessible by a full ring of bookshelves). All other armor enchantments except other protections can be combined with Magic Resistance.
Technical Information
I've noticed some threads that do not include enough information to provide a good enough preview for critics. I want to change that for them. Magic Resistance would be the data value number of 3, replacing the ID number of Blast Protection, forcing every ID afterward to become one number above what they are now. Secondly, I had forgotten to mention above the protection that Magic Resistance actually provided for enchantment and potion damage. I would like Magic Resistance to be as similar to protection as possible, but I cannot find the protection amounts, so I will make an estimated rough draft for how well Magic Resistance can protect. The percentages are: I- 15% reduction. II- 25% reduction. III- 35% reduction. IV- 50% reduction. (I did not increase the values by 20% at every increasing level to prevent a sense of overpowering effect. Finally, another big part of the suggestion I deem to be important is the chance of receiving a Magic Resistance enchantment. With the help of Minecraft Gamepedia, I have decided to make the weight of the Magic Resistance enchantment to be 3, less than Fire and Projectile Protection but higher than Thorns and Blast Protection. Therefore, you are only slightly more likely to receive Magic Resistance over Thorns and Blast Protection, but regular protection will appear much more often. Note that Magic Resistance cannot be combined with any other form of protection except Feather Falling.
PVP Effect Ok, ok, I understand. A magic resistant piece of armor that can reduce enchantment damage by half can definitely change the pace of a fight. However, with shields, removal of Notch Apples, and stamina bar, enchantments that do less damage can create fights that take longer time to finish, therefore possibly creating a positive feeling of winning a good, long battle. Players sneaking up behind you with Sharpness V suddenly are not as scary when it becomes Sharpness 2.5. A Magic Resistance enchantment could easily change the tide of a fight, even when only applied to a chestplate. However, you would be giving up protection from Flame and Fire Aspect (Fire Protection does this), and Lava Buckets. To summarize, the Magic Resistant enchantment would be able to create longer, more realistic fights during PVP that can give players the chance to actually have to use strategy instead of spamming the attack button.
For Potions I’ve talked about the effects on enchantments, so what about potions? For starters, I would like to point out that Magic Resistance would give the same amount of protection from potions as it would enchantments (see above). Only a few effects would actually have effects reduced, the only ones being poison, harming, wither, and nausea. Slowness and weakness would not be affected at all, nor would blindness. A harming potion would actually have the damage itself reduced, but the poison and wither would have different reductions; instead, they would do the same amount of damage, have the same time frame as the normal effect, but they would cause damage at a lesser rate, relative to the level of the Magic Resistance enchantment. Nausea I am still on the fence about, as I am wondering if the length of it should be reduced or the distortion should take lesser effect. Milk would still eradicate any effects, negative or positive. Positive potions would not be affected by Magic Resistance. List of Affected Items, Effects, and Enchantments - Sharpness - Power - Punch* - Knockback* - Splash/Normal Harming - Splash/Normal Poison - Nausea - Wither Effect *Throwback distance is reduced according to enchantment level.
That’s all I’ve got to say about it for now. Please PM me or post to the thread if you have questions, suggestions, concerns, or anything else, and I will be happy to answer you. Thank you!
I really like it. If Mojang found this and put this in the game, it would certainly change things, possibly for the better. I don't know if I would use it that much, though.

You're right, Magic Resistance doesn't have much use unless it is in PVP. I wouldn't use it much in singleplayer either XD. But thanks for liking it, I appreciate it.

Relatable, but I do like your suggestion, personally I think this should work against all enchantments. I don't think this should work on potions.
Now this is one well spoken suggestion. Though could you... maybe type in the default font. That Times New Roman font is kinda "off" to read.

If I recall, the devs often use magic damage to ensure the player can never completely absorb all damage in an attack, Guardians are an example Jeb pointed out once, as their beam attack does magic damage ontop of normal damage that can be absorbed.
Same thing with the Ender Dragon's fireballs in 1.9.
Yes, I think this would be a great new enchantment for Minecraft 2.0. However, I do think that nothing should be able to completely absorb any kind of magical damage. As oCrapaCreeper said, "the devs often use magic damage to ensure the player can never completely absorb all damage in an attack, Guardians are an example Jeb pointed out once, as their beam attack does standard damage ontop of normal damage that can be absorbed." (Didn't feel like quoting today)

Yeah..I was wondering how well that font would work... apparently not very well. Thank god for editing ;). By the way, thanks for the compliment on my work.

ColeTrain: I think your idea for Magic Resistance is a great one. I wish that I saw your post before I posted mine, because I also created a redundant post suggesting Magic Resistance, except as a status effect, not an enchantment. As a status effect, I think that Magic Resistance would operate similarly to Resistance, except that it would only reduce damage taken from instant damage, poison, and wither. However I'm not sure if it should also protect one from sword enchantments such as Sharpness as was suggested by you... We already have the Protection Enchantment to defend against physical damage from swords. That's why we need Magic Resistance (either as an enchantment or a status effect) to protect players from negative potion effects such as instant damage, poison, and wither, from which there is no method of defense (except for the Resistance effect, but that protects you from everything and is somewhat OP in PvP anyway).

Hey, thanks for the compliments :)! I've been hearing mixed opinions on what Magic Resistance should give more defense to, enchantment or potions, but you are correct. Protection will deny some damage from swords and bows, but I cannot edit the OP to fit only potion defenders, as this may make me lose some of my supporters. Thanks for getting this on the front page again, I could've swore that the thread was dead. A new type of "magic protection" armor seems like a good idea. It would help if you're trying to survive an attack from PVPers who wield ridiculously high enchanted weapons.
