I really love this idea, though I do have a few suggestions:
1) Maybe at the beginning, you can craft basic tutorial books such as "Your First Night" "Getting Started" "Farming Basics" "Mining Basics" "Exploring Basics" etc. These could be very rudimentary books, just to help out new players a bit.
2) Later on in the game, you could find more in depth books in dungeons and temples.
Dungeon and in villages would be better. I do understand this was made in 2011 though...
Yes, it's better that books will spawn in dungeons and villages. I even had a chest full of books in my village library in creative mode.
Also, I support the idea, even if it's made in 2011 (No Book and Quills?)
I would like to make a suggestion of location-specific books. The idea being that all books with content can either only be found, or that certain books can only be found, and the rest can be crafted. This of course would add a collecting aspect to libraries.
Books by Location:
Village
- Stories & poetry of a lighthearted nature.
- Diaries (only found in chests).
- Blacksmith guide, which is found in the smithy and contains information on furnaces, fuels, and anvil mechanics.
- Furniture schematics.
- House schematics.
- Advanced passive mob compendium with lore.
- Dyes and where they are found.
- Advanced farming guide.
Temple
- Religious-like books with stories on how different biomes were created, what lies beyond bedrock, etc. Jungle and desert temples will have different lore, with desert temples having creepers as prominent figures (which explains the creeper faces on the temple).
- Redstone schematics.
- Jungle and desert themed statue schematics.
Mine
- Ore book detailing vein sizes, depth locations, and uses.
- Redstone schematics involving minecarts.
- Mining myths and stories.
Witch Hut
- Potion guide.
- Personal journal.
Stronghold
- Libraries contain a bit of everything.
- Chests can have adventurer journals, detailing events up until they enter The End.
Books like these could benefit from double pages and smaller font/bigger pages. Mob books could have pictures on one side and information on the other. Atlases could list locations and notes beside each map.
One more idea to throw out there is a change to the bookshelf recipe. Whenever you craft a bookshelf you can use any books, but the books aren't consumed in the process. Instead, whenever you put the bookshelf down, you can access those books and remove them, except they now have a visual indication that they had been used to craft a shelf, and can't be used to craft another. While I believe the suggestions of crafting an empty shelf and filling it afterwards are better, I included this anyways as just another idea for the idea board.
Yea, this topic was started in 2011, BEFORE they did that. I would suggest checking the OP date in the future.
Any way, aside from the things that have been added to the game, atlases seem like the next logical step for books to take.
I saw an interesting thread about that a couple of days ago. Did you get a chance to read it? Also, would you do it this way, or differently?

3) I love the villager diaries too (:

Constantly evolving, reaching further heights.
