I wouldn't usually post in a suggestions thread, but I've been wanting writable books for so long.
Bump. For the great justice.
You have a good idea, I was always wondering what people would do with books in SSP. This is great. I think that this should be the perfect tutorial for minecraft. You could start out with an intro book, which explains the basics and tells you how to make the book of books.
Books would be perfect for SMP, too. When you're welcoming newcomers it's much better to give them a book than to use text chat.
I really think the Nether book should be Book + Obsidian, because then you could get information about the nether, how to build a portal and so on BEFORE you went.
Support + 1.
now you have me wanting to build a special library room just so that when i find a book in a dungeon chest i can run skip and hop all the way home to place it on my bookshelf :biggrin.gif:
i see a lot of the posts have been concerning the tutorial books, my concern is that there will be story books (you can find a lot of old HG.Wells books in text format on the 'tintawebs theres days, as with a lot of the other greats). it would be fun to not have to write all the books yourself.
i too get the cast-away in lego land feel from minecraft but i don't think that should stop u finding a good read in a chest in a dungeon. means u can start a book collection :biggrin.gif:
i look forward to seeing how this thread turns out :biggrin.gif:
I don't understand the point of the light book. There isn't any real need to know how light behaves.
Knowledge of light is important for spawning behaviour and tree/crop growth. If you know how it behaves you can optimize your torch placement to minimize the number of torches (think e.g. about illuminating a large open space such as e.g. a friendly mob grinder).

I'm still looking for more feedback on my configurable Redstone Gate mod. All gates and common circuits (such as e.g. clocks, edge detectors, latches and Flip-Flops) in a single block.
I dont like the idea of a book having to be in a bookshelf to be read...
Me neither. In fact, I oppose the fact that bookshelves should be made more useful. I would construct bookshelves with books just for the sake of having a nice library even if I could put them in a chest. If people prefer to store their books in chests, let them. Hell, I even have some boxes filled with books at home in real life.
Each book should have a page limit too, so there could be like M0b traps I, M0b traps II and so on. (the craftable books might be different versions depending on how you place the ingrediants, or how many pieces of the type-deciding ingredient you put in.)
I would split my books into multiple volumes regardless of page limitation, for organizational purposes and to ensure that I don't have to flip through many pages when I want to reference something. I'm assuming we will not have any bookmarks and I don't see many players reading a 100-page book in a single session. But, in my opinion, the limit should only be there if there is a technical limitation.
the filled one would have random books downloaded from the internet, propably written by users and checked by a moderator to check if theyre useful
In this thread, I made a proposal to store custom books independent of your game world in a player specific library (see also this thread summary). Players can then individually add and remove books from their personal library as they encounter them. This makes it more interesting to visit other worlds as well. Naturally an external download of volumes can be supported.

In pre-MP, there was a "Tutorial" button where the MP button is now.
Should someone really have to go through all the trouble of collecting **** just to know what the **** they collected does?
Not to forget - Each one of those books takes up so-so MB, and takes a lot of effort and time to write.
Maybe narrowing it down, if even keeping tutorial books at all.
"ANIMAL BOOK" - info about hostile and friendly mobs alike.
"COLLECTING BOOK" - info about tree types, charcoal, mining generations, farming & cooking, etc.
"TRAVEL BOOK" - info about ocean, boats, minecart physics, biomes and which ones are safest/dangerous, etc.
As a huge supporter of enhancing books I want to discuss this proposal in some more depth.
@Basic Premise
I agree with the following points:
[*:2k9algz7] bookshelves when crafted contain 3 spaces for books filled with empty books.
[*:2k9algz7] Breaking a book shelf will yield the materials it contains: (6 planks, the books in that shelf)
I'm not sure what you mean with the following:
and whatever materials where combined with that shelf
Can you elaborate on this?
[*:2k9algz7] Time will pass normally while reading books (this allows people to pass time (such as at night) by reading books
There are no screens that pause the game (except options in singleplayer), books should not be an exception.
[*:2k9algz7] Players Spawn with one Basic book in their inventory so they can quickly learn the basics of the game and how to make more bookshelves (for more tutorials)
Most ways to learn Minecraft involve external sources (wiki, videos, friends, forums). The only way to learn how to play ingame is through extensive experimentation. I think most players learn through external sources, so adding a tutorial book in the game itself makes sense.
I do think that the tutorial should be written in such a manner that it does not break the fourth wall.
I disagree on these points:
[*:2k9algz7] Books can only be read when in a book shelf (gives a reason to actually make shelves). Underneath each space is a small button that will allow you to read the book.
I think that aesthetic reasons are sufficient. Reading a book inside a shelf is nonsense. You take a book out of the shelves to read it.
This makes the proposal simpler and covers other uses (such as carrying a journal) with a single and uniform mechanism.
[*:2k9algz7] Books can be stored in a chest or inventory but cannot be read
Storing them in a chest makes sense. Reading a book should either be done from inventory or the world (i.e. place the book and then read it).
[*:2k9algz7] Breaking a custom book will erase what was written in it
How does one break a book? Do you mean breaking the shelf that contains it?
Anyway, I disagree. If effort is put into writing a book it should not be easily destroyed.
[*:2k9algz7] Reeds become more common (have a player always spawn near some reads (so the player has early access to books)
Reeds are not uncommon and can usually be found with less than 500 blocks of travel. Furthermore, reeds can be farmed very, very easily. All you need is a single reed block.
The tutorial book should have sufficient basics in it, e.g. it could detail to look for reeds near water.
Could you clarify what you mean with the following:
[*:2k9algz7] Custom Books can be read outside of you inventory to allow you to carry around notes (when outside the inventory left click to read and right to edit)
[*:2k9algz7] Basic Books can also be read outside of your inventory in the same manner as the Custom book (This is so beginners can easily learn of the craft bookshelves
What does it mean to read a book outside your inventory? How would this work?
With regard to taking notes, do think that plain paper should be writable? E.g. text-only, single page. Would facilitate leaving notes/letters on servers.
These are all examples of nice content for books. I do think that "Boom Book" sounds childish and would rather refer to it as "Explosives book" or "Tome of explosives" or something similar. And please, no "Him" book.
Special:
[*:2k9algz7] Custom book. I'm going into more detail on this one below.
[*:2k9algz7] Secret Compartment, Quote book.
I dislike the idea because it will store an item inside another item, which is a new game mechanic.
The examples given do not convince me of the need for this mechanic. Perhaps bookshelves should be able to story arbitrary content instead (i.e. not just books).
You can then hide materials in plain sight inside a wall of bookshelves.
[*:2k9algz7] Quote book
Could be a nice easter egg.
@Custom books
I seriously believe that the most important aspects of adding books should be the custom book.
With proper support for custom books, virtually all proposals mentioned above can be realized as specific content of a custom book instead. I like your cover art and think that cover selection of custom books would be a nice addition.
I made a proposal (see thread in my signature) to split each book into multiple pages where each page can have either text content or a single image.
The images (which could, for example, be read from the screenshot directory) can easily be utilized to describe crafting recipes, include maps (screenshot or external tool), or even make stylishly formatted book pages.
A mechanism is required for storing & recreating such books. So far, I think that custom book content should be stored alongside a world/server but should be copyable in-game to the players own local, world-independent library. Such that whenever the player want to reproduce such a book, he can import it from his local library instead of retyping the entire work. This will allow downloading books from experts as well as copying books which you encounter on servers and emphasises community driven content over predefined content (just like the wiki). I have written some additional details on how this can be done here.
A bit of a lengthy post, my apologies for that.
