Why does 'desert blandness' need 'solving'? They after all, are deserts. As in deserted. As in empty. A lifeless featureless landscape. Except occasional dead shrub, cactus, well, temple, village, hills, lava pools, ravine, hordes of mobs at night... in other words, bland.
If you want a flat biome with occasional Acacia looking tree, it's called a Savanna.
Is it okay to make a suggestion on a suggestion?. How about a sub biome for Desert biomes, to try to balance it. What i'm introducing of a concept is an Oasis sub biome, for pure asthetics.
I too would really like Oasis sub biomes with a small lake and a couple of palm trees (jungle wood), they grow coconuts that can be eaten or used in recipies. In the lake there will be lilypads, and sawgrass, just like ordinary grass, but grows two blocks (on one block high water on dirt and sticks one block up in the air). monkeys, snakes (hostile at night) and parrots (similar mob styles as bats) live in these sub biomes (also added to jungles).
In these Sub biomes you might encounter MASSIVE PYRAMIDS/DESSERT TEMPLES and SPHINXES. These structures will be guarded by mummy's. Mummy's act like zombies but, slow like creepers and harder to kill, they spawn from the ground from special blocks only found inside these structures. They could drop linen cloth which can be used to craft sails for boats, flags/banners to hang onto walls or in frames, or wings for hangliders. Dye-able ofcourse.
Similar to Leathal0428's "Crypts" (New Stucture The Crypt) Massive Pyramids/dessert temples and Sphinxes will be made by a Obsidian hard sandstone, filled with hard to break traps and made in a linear style just like Leathal's crypt's.
After you have went through the Pyramids traps you will encounter a Farao. The Farao will use spawn mummys and snakes, it also has the ability to drop two sandblocks ontop of you each 30 seconds, weaken you with splash potion, and will scare you with a mummy ghost similar to the guardian ghosts. Farao will be killable only by using splashpotion of weakness then hitting it until it dies. The Farao will drop a TOMB KEY that open a indestructible door to a indestructible room, inside it you will find lots of chests full of gold, diamonds, emeralds and other "magical stuff". A flying carpet perhaps? A genie in a bottle? who knows...
The Sphinx will have similar traps and the same mobs, but instead of a farao you will encounter a Golden Panther! The Golden Panther is quick like an Ocelot and as big as a horse, it deals massive damage. When you have dealt with the Golden Panther it will drop panther fur which can be crafted combined with leather body armor to make "sneak armor" which make you harder for hostile mobs to detect and creepers will avoid you just like cats. You will then enter a Tomb which contains chests of gold, diamonds, emeralds and other goodies.
