The suggestion of having a fruit on the cactus is not bad, but everything else is unnecessary. Deserts are vast, largely featureless areas. Having trees would certainly look out of place in a desert biome.
Now, out of interest, how much effort did it take you to explain why you felt that it was OP? Because those four lines are a damn sight more useful than your original offering.
As for your explanation, that is an issue with rarity not with the fruit being OP.
I mean, the pitaya would probably be the third worst choice of food if you ask me, right after rotten flesh and pufferfish. It certainly isn't OP as it stands.
And in the same manner that making an OP item rare doesn't make that item balanced, making a balanced item too common doesn't make the item OP. It makes the obtaining unbalanced but the items stats/effects can still be perfectly balanced.
Just for reference, I do agree that the drop rate is too high since deserts are meant to be barren (Although I doubt that this would make them the only food source worth having since you can acquire food that restores more and doesn't hurt you for only a little bit more effort), but that doesn't make you original statement of "The fruit is ridiculously overpowered." any more useful or accurate.
Overall, partial support.
It's extremely vague which makes it hard to judge the suggestion. For instance, the lack of a spawning rate for Joshua trees could leave us looking at one every chunk or one every 20. We just don't know because you didn't tell us.
As for the concept, I dislike the idea of Joshua trees being a common spawn, although I doubt I would mind too much if they were fairly rare, both the trees and the seedlings, since a single block of wood would provide enough planks for players to make a pickaxe, something you cannot do with the current resources available in a desert. That would make desert survival in large biomes more viable.
Likewise with the pitayas, I don't have anything against them provided they aren't too common (Although they might need balancing to make them useful). But it should be aimed at being a desert not a buffet.
Mummies I'm meh on. You've literally provided nothing but a basic suggestion that has been made many times before. Except you've done it with less information than most others. Also, I'm not really sure I want mummies popping up when I enter a tomb. It just seems cliché, especially since we already have zombies.
Besides, I sort of like the emptiness of the current desert temple. The lack of a special mob gives it more of a forgotten/empty feel I think.
I thought it was obvious, but stop posting subjective statements as fact.
Not really. Until we have saturation stats, we would never know. And considering how food sources that don't impale you can be made in a few secs (**cough**bread**wheeze**pork**grunt**beef), yeah, I wouldn't rely on this. What if you were low and had to heal?
Late game? Sure, much better options. But early to mid? Think about how easy to get this is. Hunger would be COMPLETELY taken care of, much easier than making farms.
I thought it was somewhat viable until the mummies. If the desert temples feel unguarded the simple incorporation of a zombie spawner into their generation would solve that. This with the booby trap gives enough to the feel. I honestly don't see what the big deal is with the fruit; although it should be more specific. You want OP food just look at the abundance of rotten flesh that has the ability to replenish hunger and when the effects stop another piece a time or two will top you off with no side effects. I have survived lost in caves and deserts; not to mention island challenge seeds; with nothing more until other resources could be obtained (cough fish). How OP is it that you could carry two water buckets to make an infinite water source and fish a never depleting food source (technically one source block if you trap the water on a piece of wall behind a pressure plate). Now that is OP!

Please actually know what your talking about before stating "fact". Rotten flesh lowers your hunger more than it raises, you can't fish from a 2x2 pool.
Fact, rotten flesh will completely restore your hunger BEFORE the food poisoning effect lowers it 1/2 to 1 drumstick. You simply keep eating it back to back until health and hunger are filled then wait out the 30 second effect timer then simply repeat until you eat some flesh and don't get the hunger effect (80% chance of hunger effect which means a 20% chance of no effect). If it won't stave off starvation then why is it an achievement? Who said anything about a 2x2 pool? I said that you have an infinite water source which can simply be enlarged. If you want the truth I stated a 1x1 so apparently you never made an AFK fisher.

That is still incredibly inefficient, the saturation is almost naught, and is not op in the slightest. Equally inefficient is making a massive pool every time you get a bit hungry.
How about eating flesh and drinking milk to negate the hunger effect? Did you not see you only need 1 water source block? I just proved that what I stated was fact simply so you would acknowledge that others do indeed have an understanding of Minecraft physics and their input is equally important in open discussions to improve suggestions.

Your own ideas are also vague, as well. Lots of ideas are, in fact.
The 1 damage gained from it will be healed in a few seconds. Deserts are fairly common. Cactus's are ABSURDLY common. 1-4 of these fruits, which are already overpowered on their own, will be on EVERY cactus. From running through a desert, you could come out with a stack of these things. They are insanely common. To quote you, if that isn't op "then the current food system must be seriously messed up." Doesnt matter how weak of a food item these things are, if they are that ridiculously common they instantly become the only food source worth having.
I stated that pitayas have a chance of being on cacti. They're uncommon as apples.
Yes, it says there is a chance 1-4 fruits can spawn on a cacti 2 blocks high. Any number from 1 to 4 will spawn...
It says that there is a chance (not a guarantee) of 1-4 being on a cactus more than two blocks high (so two blocks high won't count).
Anyways, I think that, if joshua trees are in a sub-biome and a few of them in each chunk, and if mummies only spawn around desert temples, I support these ideas.

Please click the dragons, they need to grow. Also, my fully grown dragons can be found in my bio.

It needs to be more clear. Currently it appears there is a chance OF 1-4, not FOR 1-4.
Is it okay to make a suggestion on a suggestion?. How about a sub biome for Desert biomes, to try to balance it. What i'm introducing of a concept is an Oasis sub biome, for pure asthetics.
The fact that the mummies do more damage as you kill more of them worries me. How long until they can kill you in 1 hit?
Regeneration removes any penalties of the fruit of the cacti.
Deserts are supposed to be barren. I think that is why Mojang didn't add desert trees in the first place.
No support.

Most deserts commonly have trees, however.

Reread it. I said it has a chance to be on cacti.

I love (and support) the mummy idea but the rest are stupid
and a "joshua" tree is a ridiculously awful name
ps ur "joshua leaves" are the exact same thing as oak leave
