Hot Air Balloons!

How to make the basic balloon:
You need:

[*:2cd40y2r]20 leather
[*:2cd40y2r]6 string
[*:2cd40y2r]5 wood
[*:2cd40y2r]8 cobblestone

First, we need to make the balloon itself out of leather sheets, like this:

NOTE: This is NOT a new block; It's a storage unit.

Reverse-crafting is possible, but you only get 3 back.


Arrange your sheets in a "plus" shape to get a leather balloon.

NOTE: This is NOT a new block either.

Before we go any further, we need rope. String just isn't strong enough.

NOTE: If you can make better-looking rope, please provide it.

Now, arrange the boat, furnace, rope, and balloon like this:

NOTE: Yes, that is a BOAT.
Boat: Used as the basket.
Rope: Holds it together.
Furnace: Makes hot air.
Balloon: Provides lift.

How to make the propelled balloon:
You need:

[*:2cd40y2r]5 wood
[*:2cd40y2r]8 cobblestone
[*:2cd40y2r]2 iron

Using the steps for the basic balloon, you should now have a balloon.
Next, using a bit of iron, you can add a propeller.

How to use the basic balloon

[*:2cd40y2r]Right-click to get inside.
[*:2cd40y2r]The balloon will fly north. (The direction of the "wind".)
[*:2cd40y2r]Use W to ascend and S to descend.
[*:2cd40y2r]Right-click to jump outside.

How to use the propelled balloon

[*:2cd40y2r]Right-click to get inside.
[*:2cd40y2r]The balloon's direction can be controlled using standard WASD while holding shift.
[*:2cd40y2r]If shift is not being held, use W to ascend and S to descend.
[*:2cd40y2r]Right-click to jump outside.

Fuel

[*:2cd40y2r]Once stepping inside, the balloon checks the player's inventory.
[*:2cd40y2r]It gives itself 1 coal and 1 bucket of water if it can be found. (You keep the bucket.)
[*:2cd40y2r]Every 10 minutes, it needs another bucket of water. Another check is made.
[*:2cd40y2r]Every 5 minutes, it needs another lump of coal. Another check is made.
[*:2cd40y2r]If the balloon runs out of either of these, it will slowly descend.

Crashing the balloon
The balloon will break into its basic components if it hits:

[*:2cd40y2r]A ceiling*
[*:2cd40y2r]Lava
[*:2cd40y2r]Water
[*:2cd40y2r]Fire
[*:2cd40y2r]An arrow (player or otherwise. )
[*:2cd40y2r]An explosion

Other info

[*:2cd40y2r]If there is no driver, the balloon will slowly descend.
[*:2cd40y2r]The balloon's average speed, (going east or west) is about 2/3 of a minecart's top speed.
[*:2cd40y2r]While going north (with the wind), the top speed is a minecart's top speed.
[*:2cd40y2r]While going south (against the wind), the top speed is 1/2 of a minecart's top speed.
[*:2cd40y2r]The balloon is 4 blocks high.

I don't see any similar unique ideas.
Mine is crafting.

.......Notch ought to implement this. We have vehicular sea travel and land travel, now we need air travel! Or, at least, we really really want it. :tongue.gif:


Well..... We DO have air "travel," but piggychutes aren't that effective. >_>

I was about to post a suggestion nearly identical to this, but here this thread was! I was thinking it would be cool to be at the mercy of the wind, which would have to become variable for these to have any utility. But that kinda needs to happen anyway.

Good, but drop the propelled air balloon and add DIFFERENT WIND DIRECTIONS every now and then :smile.gif:. To steer, land balloon when the wind isn't blowing the right direction. I like air travell, but it shouldn't be more powerful than boats even if it does require fuel.

Well, if that's you're only issue, then look no further:

Modular Ship Building includes a section for crafting hot air balloons. It not only works for ships comprised of only one boat section, but can also work when you have a larger ship comprised of multiple boat sections, though you'll obviously need more hot air balloons attached.

Great idea! I would love to have a war with arrows and ninja jump into a haysack 300 blocks up in the sky then bomb the city...Like a boss.
