So I have a suggestion to make about wolves/dogs! You know when you tame a dog and it's yours until it dies? Well i've been wanting to give up some dogs without killing them of having them be killed by a mob. Maybe there could be some type of way to un-tame or give a dog to someone else's possession. Anyway, I think players should be able to un-tame a dog by maybe using shears to cut off the collar. It would seem like a cool concept. I know most people would want a lot of dogs and have a huge pack, but it's hard to keep track of them all sometimes.
Sure, it doesn't hurt anything and would allow people to "sell" pets. I can picture going to a biome and getting a bunch of them, then selling them in a Desert biome.

This is a decent idea, but you may want to just delete the crossed out part. They really don't add much.
The only issue I see is this. If you made a trusted bond with an animal, why would it instantly abandon you the second you cut off it's collar? I would suggest some sort of cool down, like after you cut off it's collar it slowly starts becoming feral (wild). Maybe after a few in game days it is a wild dog?
This makes a bit more sense, and would allow people to reclaim their pets if they had second thoughts.
Well if you've made a trusted bond why would you cut it? Although, a cool down does sound like a good idea, a player wouldn't want to wait a while before the dog would become feral again. It would take some of the convenience out of it.
I see no harm in the idea. The two crossed out parts of your post don't need to be there.

Yeah, that guy in the avatar is me. I'm *that* strange. It happens. Sometimes people act like that. Just go with it. I can offer help with suggestions even before you post them - NOT make your suggestions - but help you with them.

The only issue I see is this. If you made a trusted bond with an animal, why would it instantly abandon you the second you cut off it's collar? Because gameplay trumps realism. Always. After all why would a wild wolf IMMEDIATELY and also INSTANTLY develope a 100% trust bond with you just because you gave it a bone or two ? See, that kind of logic must always be applied both ways. Since it isn't applied when taming in the first place, then it should be applied when untaming.I would suggest some sort of cool down, like after you cut off it's collar it slowly starts becoming feral (wild). Maybe after a few in game days it is a wild dog?

Comment in boldabove.
You could reclaim you pet just by taming it back again as it is so easy to do. The only way I agree with you if it it would be easy to untame by mistake, then yeah some kind of cooldown could be useful.
Personally, I think that once a dog is tamed, it should stay a dog, not turn back into a wolf:
- It becomes neutral to all players.
- A single bone will always succesfully immediately tame it.
In any case, this "Untaming" should be easy to do, yet not happen by mistake at all.
To original poster: Using shears on a dog seems an acceptable way to do it, but it could easily lead to lots of errors, like when you are shearing your sheeps and your stupid dogs run around and passes right in front of you as you try to shear the sheep. and the idea of dogs being near sheep is common enough to warrant pause (aka sheperd dogs).
I'm thinking this should work ONLY on dogs that are sitting and only when far enough away from everything else. i.e. you bring the dog 16 blocks away from all your other animals and dogs, alone, and your shear it (i.e. cut it's collar) while it is sitting, with maybe otrher players present but not other pets animals or mobs, would be the other way for the dog to "accept" being abandoned. A bit extra work to get rid of tons of dogs, sure, but no error possible.
One think I hate about dogs is that they not only recognize only a single master, but also they treat ALL other players as potential enemies. Sometimes in the heat of battle in a big fight, one players hits another player by mistake. Then his horde of dogs go kill his ally instead of sticking to fighting the zomies ! That just sucks so much that we stopped using dogs altogether.
There should be a way to make a dog have more than 1 master. I'd go at it with a renamed bone that I give my dog. The dog would befriend the player with the name of the bone.

Perhaps this could work with ocelots as well?

I've wanted to release dogs without killing them as well. This has my support.
