It's cool that the 1.9 update differentiates weapons by giving them special attacks (for swords: the sweep attack; for axes: the shield disable). However, the sweep attack as it is implemented in the 15w41b snapshot is significantly flawed in that it affects all nearby mobs and is impractical to circumvent. This poses an array of crossfire-related problems, ranging from mildly annoying to severely disadvantageous. For instance:
trying to thin a herd of animals, and ending up damaging them all, sending them on a stampede, and possibly killing the babies (mildly annoying--can be solved by using an axe to little disadvantage, especially since crit-hits from axes one-shot most animals as of their recent damage buff)
hunting/battling with a tamed wolf/pack of tamed wolves, and damaging your buddies simply by attacking the monster (moderately inconvenient--makes wolf-fighting even less viable than before, which is saying something)
defending a village from monsters, and winding up damaging/killing villagers and angering iron golems (severely problematic--makes swords useless in village-defense situations)
Yes, in each of these cases, the player could use an axe instead, but being forced to using a weapon solely because its primary alternative causes virtually unavoidable* crossfire is not healthy game design. For this reason, the sweep attack needs to be changed so that it either:
does not affect allied mobs (e.g. tamed wolves, iron golems, villagers)
can be disabled more easily
I would recommend going with option 2. The simplest solution would be that the player only performs the sweep attack if they are holding the shift key while left-clicking with the sword.
*While the sweep attack can be prevented by moving at faster-than-walking pace (see the wiki page), the fact that the player is moving at high speed also causes crossfire problems in that a sprinting player's strikes are generally far less accurate. So, while there is a way to circumvent the sweep attack, it is largely (if not entirely) self-defeating.
I'm not so sure about sweep attacks being disable-able, but I'm definitely on board with no ally crossfire, as these flaws in weaponry may get annoying when 1.9 officially releases.
I agree with all of this. The fact you can accidentally kill your allies in the crossfire so easily, is frankly ridiculous. Imagine being on a team in PVP, you slash your friends every time you hit your opponent; which ends up killing your team, then you lose. I think there should be a way to trigger the slash attack, instead of it being automatic. But I do think 2 should be added, you shouldn't be able to kill your pets; it's so easy to do, it's happened to be so many times before this update.

Let me know if my posts are helpful or if you like them. That's what I'm here for.
I am currently lurking more than I am posting. I haven't gone anywhere.
I agree that the player should have control over when they use the sweep attack and that the easiest solution would be to hold shift when attacking. These flaws I could see being quite annoying and should be remedied.
Full support.

Yes. The sweep attack does way too little damage and hinders pvp a lot. It should be made so it only works while sneaking. (Or another hotkey could be used.)
I've accidentally killed many ocelots and sheep with the current sweep. So uh... support.

Yeah, that guy in the avatar is me. I'm *that* strange. It happens. Sometimes people act like that. Just go with it. I can offer help with suggestions even before you post them - NOT make your suggestions - but help you with them.
I like option 1 because then I wouldn't have to sneak in a fight I'm trying to be nimble in.
It would be detrimental otherwise.
How about sneaking prevents the player from doing sweep attacks instead?
This way, we can stay nimble in fights and individually strike crowded mobs if we want.
Alongside this, tamed mobs should be immune to a sweep attacks AoE (area of effect) that isn't the direct strike itself, because no one likes inadvertently killing their Wolf or Horse. Problem being, though, is that Villagers and livestock can't be tamed. In which case you could use the sneak feature to prevent the sweep attack instead, like I suggest.
Most of the people here seem to relate to these predicaments of the sweep attack, even I, myself, so I'm all for making the sweep attack more controllable and friendly mob friendly, but I'd rather remain nimble when fighting with full potential 80% Support.

Sneaking prevents players from doing sweep attacks is also annoying, as you gotta sneak whenever you want to fight without damaging nearby stuff? Just lame. Maybe make it so you have to hit some other unused key to sweep attack.
It is also more inaccurate and requires space (can't crit hit if in two-high space).
Though not that much more inaccurate, and honestly, how often do you do combat in a two-high space, or to be more specific, how often do you do combat in a two-high space while also in a situation in which doing a sweep attack could prove problematic?

This is really annoying. Some people just want to kill adult chickens without accidentally murdering the babies, too.

If you'd like to talk with me about other games, here are a few I play.
Team Fortress 2
Borderlands series (Borderlands 2 is my favorite game, ever. TPS combat is a lot of fun and makes up for the lower-quality story, in my opinion)
Elder Scrolls series
Warframe (IGN is something like That_One_Flesh_Atronach)
Pokémon series (HGSS forever)
Rocket League
Fallout series
Left 4 Dead 2 (Boomer files always corrupt though)
SUPERHOT (SUPERHOT is the most innovative shooter I've played in years!)
Dead Rising series (Dead Rising 2 is one of my favorite games, and the 3rd was a lot of fun. 1st has poor survivor AI and the 4th is bad)
Just Cause series
Come to think of it, I mainly play fighting-based games.
I've accidentally killed many ocelots and sheep with the current sweep. So uh... support.

We already have a way to not do a sweep: You can just do a critical hit.
I can't even take my wolves with me anymore unless I'm using only my Bow & Arrows. Swords have WAY too much collateral damage. Support to Maximum
Also check into the Redstone Striker - a handheld power source and Protolith - The Wildcard Ore, and Crowbar aka Hand Piston - a Move Tool, more to come.

Whenever I fight wither skeletons, I always have to be really careful when there are pigmen around, all thanks to this sweep attack.

Or alternatively you could just jump and do a critical hit if you don't want to do a sweep attack.
Which also has the benefit of killing the monster faster.
