1. A short loading period, showing a rotating dirt block with a white background.
2. In places with unloaded/generated chunks, It blurs off into the void.
3. When you join your world, it gives you a small flyby over the world, circling around your character, eventually going inside your head.
4. When you SPAWN your world, it does #1, then shows a first-person view of you floating on a couple of planks of wood, then crash into the shore, dropping 0-1 wood planks, 0-4 sticks. It shows your character looking around in a confused way, still in first-person, then lets you take control.
Hey, maybe if you go 2X the area of the world, you might even find your wrecked ship!
You might even find other shipwrecked survivors... Which brings us to my second idea, NPC dialog and interactions.
When you first come in sight of an NPC, you hear the "Hey! Over here!" sound from Mo' Creatures' Werewolf.
They then come running over to you, and you two enter a GUI menu with things to say on the bottom, like in Fallout 3. On the top of the GUI is a trading menu, with two 9X9 grids. You put in say, a stack of dirt, you might get, say 32 planks. We would then need a value system for the objects in the game. The NPC will have more loot the longer they have been spawned.
I suspect it would be to complicated to have the NPCs making shacks and mines, but if that happens, scratch the longer spawn = more loot.
Tell me what you think, I hope I haven't bored you.
I can see it now, the view spiraling down on your character as the map generates. Pure awesomeness. Your other ideas, don't really care for.
The npc would be way too complicated. Making values for every item in the game versus every item in the game would just not be worth it, and many players could just bring stacks of stone for the easy way in to get diamond or something.
But if its npcs you're craving, we have Colony Mode under planning and development(I would link you but we're creating a new, fresh topic. The old one was for the real planning)

As you can probably tell, I suck at composing paragraphs and whatnot.
Personally, I believe my favorite idea is this one, and my second is the SMP health system.
Oh....I thought you meant smooth as in not crappy loading time and what not (and minecraft doesn't have that for most computers)anyways these ideas are un-needed so I don't see them being implemented in the near future,

These guys make awesome art for Mods (Items, New Blocks and Mobs)
I will be using them soon
I'm Starting to be known as a Balancer, A.K.A. I'm starting to become pessimist

Dude, this is too epic for Notch to ignore, hopefully.
