Durability: 1861/1861 *Fixed* 521/521 (Shouldn't be tougher than Diamond, due to fact Diamond Breaks it, as well as the supply of Obsidian is very high)
SUMMARY:
If this were a weapon implemented into 1.9 it's swing rate would be slow, due to the fact that it is made from obsidian and the high damage would class this weapon as a "heavy weapon". Tell me what you think please. And try to be harsh.
I'VE TRIED TO FIX THE ISSUE WITH OP. YOU ARE NOW SWAPPING DURABILITY FOR POWER. AS WELL AS REMOVED THE INGREDIENT OF THE HILT. REPLACED WITH SIMPLE STICK. AS WELL AS REMOVED OBSIDIAN SHARDS. SIMPLE OBSIDIAN BLOCKS WILL SUFFICE. TONED DOWN THE DAMAGE AND DURABILITY.
This is spam. Give details as to why!
But as for me, I like it. It is kind-of hard to get (with the whole hilt and mining with an unenchanted pickaxe) but doesn't give a super overpowered effect like most others. (Something along the lines of you deal Wither 3 damage to all mobs in a 3-block radius) And with 1.9 being all about combat it would make sense to introduce at least 1 new weapon.Full support!

If you'd like to talk with me about other games, here are a few I play.
Team Fortress 2
Borderlands series (Borderlands 2 is my favorite game, ever. TPS combat is a lot of fun and makes up for the lower-quality story, in my opinion)
Elder Scrolls series
Warframe (IGN is something like That_One_Flesh_Atronach)
Pokémon series (HGSS forever)
Rocket League
Fallout series
Left 4 Dead 2 (Boomer files always corrupt though)
SUPERHOT (SUPERHOT is the most innovative shooter I've played in years!)
Dead Rising series (Dead Rising 2 is one of my favorite games, and the 3rd was a lot of fun. 1st has poor survivor AI and the 4th is bad)
Just Cause series
Come to think of it, I mainly play fighting-based games.
-A new tier of weapon is a bad idea, and we've seen the suggestions for an obsidian tier multiple times before.
-Why just a sword, and not a full tool set? Everyone's going to be wondering why they can craft a sword, but not an axe or a hoe.
-The cost is overpriced; I'm not going to be spending 8 diamonds and looking for rare obsidian shards when I could be enchanting my diamond sword to be almost as powerful
-Even with the defense of "It's hard to get", it doesn't automatically make the weapon balanced. It's still OP, and adds up with enchanting. Even without enchantments, a 10 damage sword will add up tremendously. For example, let's say you're surrounded by 10 zombies. Each zombie has 20 health. Normally, a diamond sword would take about 25 hits before they all die. However, using an Obsidian sword would pick them off with only 18 hits. A pretty big difference, right?
You do realize that Diamond cuts Obsidian, right? That would technically mean that Obsidian would be weaker than Diamond. Also Obsidian is volcanic GLASS. Glass is fragile. (Unless the glass in question is Malachite, that stuff is strong)
I think the idea of adding two unique items in the game that only serve to create this one tool, is a waste of item slot space, and unneeded.
Also 1/1000 or a 0/001% to obtain an obsidian shard? No, just no.
A better option for this would be:
I= Iron Ingot, O= Obsidian, B= Blaze Powder
_B_
OIO = Reinforced Iron Rod
_B_
Reinforced Iron Rods can be replaced with sticks and increases the base durability of a tool by %200. This could be used to craft any tier of tool.
This would make Gold Tools have the durability of Iron Tools, which would make easily enchanted Gold Tools more viable.
You could also make Chain Armor by using the Reinforced Iron Rods in place of Ingots/Diamonds/Leather in a crafting recipe for Armor.
But then again, this idea would be pointless (because of mending, and unbreaking enchantments) and better off as a mod.
Plus 10 damage on a sword is OP. Sharpness V would be stupidly OP...
Actually, no.
Why? In order to kill a mob with 20 HP in less than two hits you have to deal 20 damage in a single hit; that requires a sword with 17 attack damage plus Sharpness V (Sharpness V adds only 3 damage in 1.9). Even if it dealt 19.999 damage it would still require two hits. In fact, the OP's sword is still weaker than a Sharpness V diamond sword in 1.8 (14.25 damage vs 13 for the OP's sword with Sharpness V). The only advantage that higher damage (between 10-20) has is the ability to kill armored mobs or players faster, or mobs with a different amount of health (e.g. Endermen have 40 HP, in 1.8 a Sharpness V diamond sword kills them in 3 hits while in 1.9 or with the OP's sword you need 4 hits unless one is critical).
Indeed, the nerfs to weapons and armor in 1.9 open up the possibility of higher tiers and/or new weapons and armor without being overpowered (compared to what they used to be). Although this suggestion is not quite what it should be like, especially how you obtain the materials needed.

Thanks for the comment, but here is where I get confused. You say that Obsidian is glass. Glass is fragile, yes. But at the same time you can't be looking at this as a real life weapon. I do not think that Mojang purposely added Obsidian to be known as a glass. If they did why is it so hard to break? This is not real life here. We're in Minecraft. Obsidian is the second hardest block in the entire game behind Bedrock, so no I do not think it's fragile.

One reason I did not think of adding any other tool or gear that is Obsidian is because of this:
Obsidian is an extremely hard block in Minecraft. Using this knowledge we can assume that Obsidian must be very dense. Dense objects are heavy because of how much mass they have. So, let's say we do get Obsidian armour. In 1.8 there is no weight limit or anything that can slow us down while carrying it, so if we had this Armour on that was made from Obsidian, a EXTREMELY DENSE rock, then we would be almost invincible and it would be too OP. Now let's say they DO decide to add weight limit into the game. Now we have super heavy gear on and would probably have slowness 3 on and it would be useless to wear. That is why there is no armour.
Now onto the toolset. We have an Obsidian Axe. Or even an Obsidian Hoe. Maybe for a Obsidian Sword it is worth trying to get the resources for, but for a mere axe or hoe, I don't think that those would even be necessary because there's no reason to get an axe that swings slowly. AND THE HOE?!?!?! No ONE EVEN USES DIAMOND HOES UNLESS THEY JUST FEEL LIKE WASTING! So why would they use 8 diamonds on a hoe??
And for the OP part. I'm pretty sure you just counteracted your argument when you said "The cost is overpriced; I'm not going to be spending 8 diamonds and looking for rare obsidian shards when I could be enchanting my diamond sword to be almost as powerful", then you said "Even with the defense of "It's hard to get", it doesn't automatically make the weapon balanced. Well, if it's OP AND It's hard to get I'm pretty sure that you deserve a sword with that kind of power when you went through all that trouble.
Thank you, for the comment

Actually, despite how heavy obsidian is, it's actually quite brittle. If you ever played the mod TConstruct, it actually gives realistic stats of obsidian tools instead of making obsidian tools practically unbreakable ("Tough as nails, but fragile when shaped" -TConstruct). The reason that obsidian tools don't exist are probably partially due to the fact that making obsidian into tools would make it much less durable than it used to be in block form. About the only counterargument is that it would be the same case for diamond. You are completely accurate on the heavyweight armor, though (even though diamond is just as dense, but hey, Minecraft logic).
You don't speak for everyone. There is probably a relatively small, but not infinitesimal, amount of people who actually use diamond hoes for their durability, as they don't have to constantly replace/repair their hoe. If obsidian hoes shouldn't be added, then why do we have diamond hoes in the first place?
And for the OP part. I'm pretty sure you just counteracted your argument when you said "The cost is overpriced; I'm not going to be spending 8 diamonds and looking for rare obsidian shards when I could be enchanting my diamond sword to be almost as powerful", then you said "Even with the defense of "It's hard to get", it doesn't automatically make the weapon balanced. Well, if it's OP AND It's hard to get I'm pretty sure that you deserve a sword with that kind of power when you went through all that trouble. Oh, crap, I just realized that. Well, its actually tough for me to decide if this item is in the overpowered or underpowered zone. It wouldn't be very convenient for me to backpedal, so I'll just say that I think that this item may be balanced if the intensity is decreased. For example, the cost could be lowered, and the effectivity of the weapon could be lowered. That way, people wouldn't be taking sides between convenience or inconvenience. One group wouldn't be arguing that it would be OP, and the other wouldn't be arguing about the high cost as much. Again, I apologize for the problem in my critique.
Thank you, for the comment
I support the concept, but I think this is a little difficult to get for something, and even enchantments would be easier. I personally would think of an obsidian sword that might have more durability, although not the most amount of damage, but that is just what I think. It could do 6 damage, but have 3000 durability, for example.
You do realize that Diamond cuts Obsidian, right? That would technically mean that Obsidian would be weaker than Diamond. Also Obsidian is volcanic GLASS. Glass is fragile. (Unless the glass in question is Malachite, that stuff is strong)
By this logic, fighting with just your fists should be the strongest way to attack in the entire game, because fists break wood, which breaks stone, which breaks iron, which breaks diamond, which breaks obsidian.
As for the sword itself, I'm not sure that an entire STACK of coal just to get two obsidian shards, which serve no purpose other than to make this sword, is the best idea. Why not just use two obsidian blocks, and make the damage 9, so it fits with the current tier progression?

You are right. I have decided to remove the Idea of Shards completely, and made the durability low and damage lower, because of the supply of Obsidian is high and very easy to obtain.
The idea is better now, and much less bizarre in cost. Then again, many would still argue that the Sharpness enchantment would overbuff the sword, due to the multiplier add-up. Also, there's still the tool/armor absence, which would make the completionists twitch, despite the heavy armor logic. It's a nice attempt in correction, but I still can't support in the end.

This idea is OK, but i have one question;
Shouldn't a Diamond Sword be stronger?
A Diamond Sword has an Attack Speed of 11.2 damage every second.
Your Obsidian Sword has an Attack Speed of 10 damage every second.
On a long-term basis, a Diamond Sword could do 20,306 damage in it's lifetime.
Your Obsidian Sword... umm... what was it's durability?

It has been said,
but here I go, anyways.
You can enchant a diamond sword to get Ultrakills on most mobs and players.
Why would you want more?
"fur servrs n armord playrs n mo difcult mobs", you may say, well,
you can get more Sharpness levels on servers, I have seen that, and
if a mob has been created with more HPs, it has been made like that for us not to cr0wn it, or kill it easier.
Another reason?
Oh, and there are mods about this anyways, so you could just download one of them, the one you like most.
