Backpacks
Backpacks act as chests, except they are mobile.
When wearing a backpack, the inventory space is expanded to the size of a large chest, making it easier to transport items, or carry items such as arrows , food etc.
I had this exact same idea and I came here to post it when I saw your post!
I think it'd be great, and it could easily be crafted with leather as you make a storage box. It'd be really nice to have.
They would have to have the size equal to or less than the size of a single chest to keep it from being overpowered, and probably limiting the player of only being able to carry one. It would also make sense that to open the backpack you have to place it on the ground like a chest, but breaking it to re-equip it means the computer has to save data of all items in the backpack. Also, what if you put a large chest full of backpacks?
If backpacks could be opened out of the inventory, it would require another menu interface screen, requiring much coding and prone to error and bugs.
Backpacks are not likely to happen soon unless someone had been working on a mod for it.

That would mean altering the inventory screen and, again, requiring much coding.
There would have to be many, many conditions checking every frame or so to limit bugs, and considering the game is not even finished yet-well, we really dont need many more bugs.
For example, is the backpack equipped in some sort of slot or in the inventory? What if you had a full inventory and took off the backpack? Would all the items be in the backpack, so that when you equip it again, all the items would return?
Far, far too much data storage and system recognition.

You have a point. I didnt really think how much space a large chest has, maybe only 2 extra rows? Because a large chest, your avatar, mini crafting square and armour slots wont all fit into the same screen, unless the crafing square, armour slots, and avatar picture are put to the side, allowing it to fit on the screen.
If you take off the backpack, it would act as destroying a chest. the items would fall on the ground, causing less bugs.
A better idea would just have it only give extra space the size of a single chest. Even then, it takes up a lot of the screen.
Backpacks would make other mobile cargo obsolete, and at a cheaper price. Railroad tracks would be worthless, because this only requires leather and holds just as much as a minecart with chest(and if you wanted the backpack to hold as much as LARGE chest, well then, minecarts are completely worthless).
Plus, in Colony Mode, having a Backpack would make Wagons obsolete and make NPCs non-raidable.
The backpack should only hold as much as half a chest.

To make a backpack, you must use leather.
Hope you like this idea. Feel free to comment.
