A new use for water bottles: You can drink a bottle of water before eating a food and gain 5 extra saturation points (exception to change) on what that food already has. For example, an apple has 2.4 saturation, so drinking a water bottle will increase that saturation to 7.4. Steak has a saturation of 12.8, so eating it after a bottle of water will give you 17.8.
Each water bottle you drink only accounts for one food that you eat, so you have to drink another water bottle to get the same effect on the second food you eat.
Maybe reduce the amount of saturation gained by 2? Or have different point increases based on the food you eat. Although still I would prefer to have some sort of thirst system.
water should either be something that you must consume regularly (with clear indicator (separate bar); some mods offer that) or it should be abstracted away (what vanilla minecraft does - it is implicitly presumed that you drink water and go to the loo (behind the tree) later; it's just not in gameplay).

No it shouldn't. We don't want another bar to micromanage.
A bit of a redundant idea, and not really necessary. You can't see what your saturation is, so there's not much purpose to clog your inventory with water bottles just for that. You're better off just sticking with food - which the game has plenty of.

Yeah, that guy in the avatar is me. I'm *that* strange. It happens. Sometimes people act like that. Just go with it. I can offer help with suggestions even before you post them - NOT make your suggestions - but help you with them.
Partial support. I really like the concept, but would prefer to have a brewable "sustenance" potion requiring some other resource, rather than just being able to use an endless water supply to perpetually buff saturation. Maybe brewed with apples since they are fairly common but only acquired randomly, and just have their standard 2 shanks of hunger restoration instead apply directly to saturation for a total of 4.4 saturation when consuming the potion. It should also be freely consumable, and not be tied to any concurrently consumed food items. I think your way is just a little too unnecessarily elaborate for most players to get into. Again I say: Partial support.
Better than most water-drinking threads I've seen, but the issue is that in 1.9 you regenerate based on the amount of saturation you have. 5 extra saturation would be way too powerful, as water is easy to come by.

My thoughts exactly.
1.9's new regen mechanic relies solely on saturation, and it is crazy fast! adding any more saturation to food items, especially as much as 5 points, just for drinking water? All you need is a single block of water, and one bottle, and you would be infinitely healing. No support.
No one would cram their inventory with it even if it were implemented. It doesn't make sense to me to have more than three water bottles in your inventory at all times on top of how much your inventory is usually filled. I do agree with your criticism on the fact its an easy source to obtain though. I think ill change the saturation down to 2.5. and maybe the water has to go through some process to balance it out.

Perhaps a potion of saturation? There currently is a "saturation" potion effect in the game that restores one hunger point per tick. It'd have to be very expensive or hard to get to balance that, though.

This does not have my support.
