did you know there used to be a command for that (/fly)? I don't know why they decided to remove it, adding a mod that adds it back in shouldn't be that hard to do.
You misunderstand - it used to be a VANILLA feature of minecraft, and I said it probably WOULD'T be hard to add it back it with a mod.
I believe it existed during infDev.
i think flying could help you place build better stuff without having to nerd poling or whatever....i use the morph mod and turn into bat when i have really tall building i wanna build...and the OP is wanting to use it as a gamerule so you dont have to use it if you dont want to. which isnt that what MOST gamerules are? just because you wanna fly in creative doesnt mean you wanna cheat in blocks to build :/ and thats pretty much what the above two posts are pretty much saying in all honesty anyways i think it would be cool to be able to use IF you wanted to especially since we get to edit our loot tables (we might be able to add in like a paper/book that says we can enable it or something like that)
no but what if you want the blocks you mine when in creative mode and you want them legit? i like to build underground but my reach only goes so far so if i need to build up its kinda annoying having to build up a bit and then when done you have to take the thing down which if you're using one of your tools to take it down it will take off durability off your tools
What is the point of adding a command to make things easier, so you can avoid having things made easier by having infinite blocks? If you want to do things legit, all flying will do is make your achievements subpar compared to if you hadn't used it. "I want to be able to fly so that I can build more easily in survival, but I don't want to use creative because the infinite blocks and breaking speed means I can build more easily" is hardly a good argument. Compare it to baking cakes; If you had a machine that could perfectly bake the cake, there'd be no accomplishment or achievement in making one.
Having a fly command would be pointless because it would remove the accomplishment that comes from tedious hard work.

No. This is cheating. If you want to justify cheating, be my guest, but I can assure you this gamerule, by the laws of game design, is overpowered and cheating.
but it was survival mode flying. Apparently it wasn't too OP back then. and if flying in survival is so OP, why are there so many mods that allow it?
So much logic fail.
1. It was too OP "back then" Alpha was a test stage, not the finished product. It was removed for a reason.
2. There are mods that add poop themes to the game. I don't think we should consider mods to be a benchmark.
I'm talking about POPULAR mods. E.G. ExtraUtilities, MagicalCrops, Morph mod, ect.
Is this an example of the "No Popular Scotsman" fallacy or "Appeal to the Mod"?
As for the suggestion itself, what purpose would it serve? It basically makes horses, minecarts, ladders, elytra, ender pearl, and End gateway portals all obsolete. As others have said, if you REALLY want to fly to get somewhere, why not go into creative mode briefly, then back to survival once you're done?

If you use plugins it is still there. it is part of Essentials. you have to give the permission for it though which is essentials.fly
I'll never ever support this, it's way too OP, it's cheating, it will break the game.
NO SUPPORT AT ALL
I agree with the feeling you're trying to convey, but you're kinda over exaggerating. It won't be game breaking. You can only use it when you have commands, so it doesn't break multiplayer, and you don't have to use it in survival.
I do think that it's good for options and game customization, which is important in a game like minecraft. However, like Shaddura said, you're asking to make something easier so it doesn't have to be easy. That makes no sense. If you want to build, build. If you want to survive, survive. But it seems like a bad idea to mix them, and will take away from each. You don't have the pride of having a pure, survival built world. But since resources are limited, you won't be able to make awesome builds like in creative. It mixes two things that takes away from each.
No support.
The funny thing is, all you people saying "it's too op" aren't realizing there used to be a command that did this exactly.
Yes, they did add it. However, what you seem to not realize is that they removed it.
And they removed it for a reason. I think the fact that it used to be
in the game, and no longer is, is a great reason not to add it again.
I think there should be a new gamerule called EnableFly the new gamerule will only effect survival
and when activated set to true double tapping space bar like in creative will make you fly and double
tapping again will make you fall or you could shift to the ground
please say what you think

I'd rather not break the game with overpowered gamerules, thank you very much.

Just because Mojang had previously added it, doesn't make it a good design choice.

Popular =/= good.
