An extremely rare occurrence is that a villager may spawn as a Jester. The Jester is prone to wacky behavior, like pig riding, and is loaded with various pranks, such as occasionally spawning a cow in lieu of steak during a trade. Some of the trades offered by this fellow are just silly, and some are too good to be true (like 64 emeralds for one carrot) but if you go for one of those, you'll find it that it is indeed too good to be true, as the Jester will laugh at you and run away with your carrot. It's important to note that this will never happen when trading an item of value (unless you consider a single carrot or block of dirt of particular value). Some of the Jesters little gags and built in Easter eggs change with each game update so his gags never get stale. While some may find a villager riding haphazardly around on a pig while laughing to be more annoying than humorous, the Jester himself is quite rare and the pig riding isn't an every day occurrence. Also, the other villagers won't hold it against you if you decide to make the Jester... disappear?
Trading with the Jester is the only way to acquire a new item called "The Mystery Box". This item can, when broken, drop one to three items from a selection listed below. The Mystery box may drop 1-3 Mystery boxes (like winning a free ticket on the lotto). Most often the box will yield blocks of little value, since there are more of those in the game. And no, no dragon eggs or end completion rewards. The problem with getting the mystery box is that it is a top tier Jester trade item. That's right, if you want to get them, you have to do some of the goofy trades. If you do get ripped off of non-valuable goods during these trades, they still count in your favor.
1> Gold Nuggets
2> Carrots (In keeping with the Jester/Pig relationship)
3> Golden Carrot (Rare)
4> Carrot on a stick
5> A Saddle
6> Nametag (sometimes enchanted, and with one of several preselected funny names on it, like "Jack Hammer")
7> Diamond pickaxe (sometimes with random enchantment - Very rare)
8> Bottle'O Enchanting
9> Bucket of Milk
10> Ore (any type, but 1 in 10,000 for diamond ore)
11> More Mystery Boxes
Items like the pickaxe and nametag are always dropped as a single item.
The mystery box is also valuable if left unbroken. During the night it becomes as strong as bedrock, and during the day it is just a bit weaker than obsidian. It is also (arguably) a very decorative block with ornate patterns of yellow and purple on its sides. The Mystery Box emits a small amount of light. If no Jester exists in your world then breaking a Mystery Box will cause one to be spawned.
Yes, the Jester was brought up under a different name as part of another thread which has gone awry and which has morphed into a broad discussion thread (and will hopefully be moved). Thus leaving this as the only thread dedicated to this idea. I have also refined the idea with the addition of a new item and hopefully by doing so, given the Jester a useful purpose other than adding some more lulz to Minecraft.
Definitely on the fence about this one.The mystery box seems too much like a lucky block. How about instead of giving you random items, it gives you some select items, some of which are really crappy ,others which are decent, but not Godlike.
The Jester in itself is a nice idea though.

I will admit, this is quite a step up from the stuff in your other thread about "prankster villagers", "Herobrine reflections" and whatnot. A jester villager is still quite goofy, but it also has some sort of sense given how Minecraft mostly has that medieval thing going for it. This villager laughing at you with the joke trades might be cute the first time but would get monotonous after a while.
The Mystery Box is a little out there, but granted it's not unfitting for such a villager. This new item and villager sound interesting, but I don't know if it's something I'd support.

What would make you support it? I mean, I did include that some of the pranks and gags are updated with each new update. So there'd always be something new by the time something got old.
I am considering a behavior mechanic for the Jester at night time... Tell me what you think.
Luring Mobs: At night time the Jester doesn't go indoors like other villagers. Instead, he wanders about. If he encounters a mob, he tries to maintain a minimum safe distance while making his way toward the nearest iron golem (if there is one). If there is no iron golem in range, he just reverts to normal nocturnal villager behavior.
EDIT: The villager is rather rugged and doesn't take fall damage. This is to facilitate slapstick gags, like pestering the iron golem and getting knocked high up into the air.

Being a console player I've never seen a "lucky block". Don't they spew a bunch of stuff? There'd be no spewing here. Usually one item, occasionally two or three. I am not opposed to limiting the selection of possible items though. How about this?

If that was added, I'd give support. Think about your original idea. Almost every single item in Minecraft. I could get some nice Diamond ore, or perhaps a stick, a sponge, some wood... etc etc.
The possibilities are just too varied for me. Keeping it simple will cause more players to actually use the Mystery Box.

I don't even know why I don't like this idea. It just seems like a waste of time. I know I wouldnt trade with a joke mob with the off chance of getting something to begin with, but then with a 1/1000 chance of getting something of higher value than a dead bush. I wouldn't mind a new villager type but not one that scams you, runs off, has to be maintained all the time and would get stale.
It's only the diamond ore that would be 1 in 10,000. I didn't attach any numbers to the odds of anything else, which means there's room for discussion. If words like "rare" mean specifically 1 in 1000 to you then perhaps I should be saying "quite uncommon"
The diamond pickaxe is valuable, especially if it comes enchanted. The nametag can be quite useful too, and who couldn't do with a few blocks of random ore or bottles'o enchanting? Once you achieved the top tier of the Jesters trades you could trade for the Mystery Box without having to endure any more goofy trades. And the box is also a cool building block.
Also, the scam you talk about is actually a fair trade of a carrot for trade credit (whatever it's called when you work your way to a higher tier).
What would make you support it? I mean, I did include that some of the pranks and gags are updated with each new update. So there'd always be something new by the time something got old.
I don't think this is one of those ideas that can be changed up for me to support. I'm on the fence about both parts of the idea. The jester could maybe be something that could fit in. The mystery box sounds fun, but doesn't feel like vanilla-Minecraft material. That sounds like something that'd fit better in a Mario game, and not so much a build/survival one.

It's stuff like this that just dampens a suggestion and makes it wobbly. I don't think anyone is gonna pick up on the fall damage part. I can't imagine a player going "He didn't take fall damage? HAHAHAHA Oh I get it! Slapstick!" The Iron Golem part is a bit more sensible though.

1. Randomness does not automatically equal funny. Think about someone playing who has never seen these threads. When they make a trade and don't get what they expect, are they more likely to see the joke or think something's bugged about the game?
2. Even the stuff that could be funny just doesn't feel very...Minecraft-y. It just feels too forced, and is not a good fit for vanilla Minecraft.

I mentioned that these guys are rugged and don't take fall damage to facilitate slapstick humor, not because the fact they don't take damage from the gags is funny in and of itself. A Jester starts teasing the golem, gets knocked up several seconds of fall time into the air, lands, and makes a funny noise and runs away. Oh, nevermind. Anything I suggest about this critics will say would happen at an absurd frequency or have stupid parameters forcing me to explain more and more until nobody cares anyway. I would think people who saw a funny dressed villager who was called a "Jester" would get it and not assume when they encounter something silly with this guy that it was a bug. But I guess I am just reaching. I'm going to reserve my energy for defending ideas that I think are super-cool (i.e. those linked in my signature) rather than just interesting and people might like.
i kinda like the idea of a jester villager running around doing silly things during the day but at the same time he actually becomes useful during the night. the fall damage is understandable since he will be getting thrown around by golems. how will he annoy the golem though? will he throw snowballs at it? then if he does get the golem to attack whats to stop the golem from going all out till the jester is dead? like when you attack a golem. i dont agree with the mystery box though, leave that for the lucky block mod. his scam trades are kinda funny but if he runs off with my diamonds, emeralds or even iron he'll end up with an axe to the face
No diamonds, the Jester doesn't care about diamonds, he cares more for carrots and blocks of dirt, maybe even a mushroom! As far as pestering the golem, I'm thinking he would sometimes block his path briefly, then run away, repeating this a few times until Bang! Zoom! Straight to the moon! Of course I don't suggest anything be an "all the time" thing so it gets real tired. People who have seen the little gags before a few times will not think anything of it, but those who haven't, some of them anyway, should get a good chuckle out of it the first few times.
A lot of people will not agree with a new villager exclusively based on lulz factor, which is why the Jester is given a valuable trade consistent with his theme. Perhaps having the mystery box become like bedrock at night is overpowered, as suggested above. Even if it were taken down a notch that way to say Obsidian strength at night and a bit less during the day. I do want to set it apart from the lucky block but still offer a surprise rather than a fixed type of goodie.
