I was aware of that from the start. All it takes is one little lever or button to get this block going, and the block just freely goes in one direction with no middleman redstone objects or circuits to guide it like most contraptions require.
No, it doesn't. It CONSTANTLY needs a signal to run.
Yes, a lever would do it, until the block moved and the lever broke off.
If it were also a transparent block, you couldn't attach redstone stuff directly to it to begin with. It would require a constant external source of power.

push block / shulker plate and 3 redstone dust.
when powered, it will move a few blocks, and then stop. different power sources make it last longer or shorter. for examples, redstone torches will power it for 5 blocks, while a redstone block for 15.
the side it is facing is solid, but the rest of the block is transparent. when it hits a block, it stops.
there is also a revert push block which will move and then move back to its starting position. revert blocks ignore redstone signals when returning. uses gravel. in this way you can make fairly cheap elevators.
if you use redstone on it while it still has a charge, it will speed up. therefore placing multiple torches will get it to a high speed very quick.
therefore it will still take a level a redstone to power it but not as much as suggested here.

You got me there, but my point is still there. What is the purpose of a piston? For blocks to move. Now we're throwing in blocks that just glide along a direction.

Would this block push other blocks? No.
Difference is a piston pushes blocks, this pushes entities/mobs

Pistons can also push mobs. The way blocks are handled in the game don't allow much vertical movement when standing on them. Only horizontal movement works well with moving blocks, which you might as well make with pistons and redstone things anyway since it's easier to make those earlier in the game than it is to get to The End and get the stuff to craft this new moving block.

I like the idea of a 6 directional moving block/elevator, but I thinks the way by which it operates/powered should be simplified or at least clarified properly.

If it has psuedo connectivity or moves two blocks in response to a redstone charge before stopping, you have yourself a winner in my opinion. I don't know about linking charge strength to block movement distance. I think that would break the idea. Even if it moves one in response to redstone, one can place it in front of a torch tower and cycle the torches with a simple clock to make it go up. Place it next to a line of redstone with redstone torches every so many blocks and it'll go to the end of the line.
I had considered having the blocks respond to gravity, but that really overcomplicated the concept, All blocks in MC stay where the user places them, With these you have to use a redstone signal to get them to go anywhere, they would not replace pistons because pistons have a simple purpose, push 1 block in any direction and with sticky pistons pull back.
A piston elevator is a complicated and clunky thing that is a series of motions taking advatage of the game mechanic that pushes the player up when a block is moved into their space. And down is simply just not allowing them to fall more than a block at a time.
Well the idea of making it gravity affected is that it can move up or down. If this idea in it's current form, even without gravity, were complimented by something like a redstone rotator (a block that reorients a neighboring block) then you could create elevators that only need one Levitation block to go up and down (and even horizontally). In any case, with or without gravity, with or without complimentary concepts, I support this. It opens up a lot of possibilities in the game.
This is an awesome idea, so obviously, Mojang will ignore it

*Block floats up 1 block, the block above where it was originally has no redstone current, block falls*
*You add LOTS of redstone*
*You use so much redstone that it would be less expensive and easier to make a piston elevator*
No support
The block wouldn't fall, it would just sit there. And this would not use that much redstone.

If it constantly needs a signal to run I'd say it's quite balanced for it's usage.
I approve!
