After farming a lot of villagers for a lot of items, I came to the realization that they were never, in any way, shape, or form going to help me finish building the long railroad that leads from my home base to their village. Then I had an idea: a villager engineer! It would be a villager that deals in various items relating to devices, redstone, and transportation.
Their first-tier trades might be to buy redstone dust and sell either buttons or levers.
Second-tier trades could be to buy iron and sell redstone items like redstone torch, redstone repeater, redstone comparator.
Third-tier trades could be to buy gold and sell iron items like minecarts, minecart rails, hoppers, and pistons.
Fourth and final tier trades could be to sell advanced items like any of the three special rail types, redstone lamps, sticky pistons, or TNT.

I want ocean content(thanks Möjang!), nether biomes(again thanks!!), and savanna passive mobs (meerkats incoming!?).
Why trade when we can just craft these items? Why not just use emeralds?
The first-tier trade on other villagers is often not particularly useful, but you never know when someone might want one of those and not want to bother getting the stuff for it. I didn't see any better options in either the redstone or transportation tabs of the creative mode inventory when I looked, but looking again I see maybe a dispenser or dropper would be better choices.
I thought dealing in emeralds was obvious. When I said sell, I meant that the villager gives you that item in exchange for your emeralds. When I said buy, I meant that villager accepts that item from you in return for an emerald.

There's nothing wrong with the idea, but I don't see why any villager would take gold instead of emeralds, though it would stop people from emerald farming this stuff so easily. I wouldn't say this idea is a 'must-have', but wouldn't be bad in-game.
Support for the most part, though I think players should just craft this stuff themselves.

Yeah, that guy in the avatar is me. I'm *that* strange. It happens. Sometimes people act like that. Just go with it. I can offer help with suggestions even before you post them - NOT make your suggestions - but help you with them.
I never said that. This villager is supposed to trade everything for emeralds just like any other.
My bad I guess, though the way you wrote that does make it a bit easy to make that mistake.
Am I to assume that the first tier is just a thing like "you want the better trades? you're gonna have spend some emeralds for a level or button first" to get to the better trades? Also, how many emeralds is each item worth?

I like the idea but you said in your comment that it doesn't necessarily have to trade for emeralds. Which begs the question: aren't emeralds equal to everything for villagers? This "unnecessary" trade is actually a bit out of place for a villager, they should still trade items for emerald but not trade iron or gold for emerald but rather the opposite.

I thought I made it clear, either you're trading an item for emeralds, or you're trading emeralds for an item. That's how trading always works with villagers. Do I have to explain every last tangent detail?
The first-tier trades you don't have to give up emeralds, you can trade redstone dust to get emeralds.

Yes, I said these villagers buy gold or iron, meaning they give you emeralds for your gold or iron.
