I am going to keep this nice and simple. I have been playing the game Factorio a lot recently(A LOT. 6 days clocked currently), and one of the cool features that I like is that if you exit your inventory when holding an item, it stays "held" by your cursor. After coming back to minecraft, I keep finding myself putting coal in a furnace, splitting the stack in half, then exiting my inventory expecting the item to stay in my hand to be easily placed into the furnace right next to the first furnace. But instead, it falls on the ground, which is annoying.
You could fix that by having any item that is being held be put into your off-hand slot, and when you open your inv again the item is on your cursor like it was before.

Do you mean that if a furnace is broken the dropped item(s) will go into your offhand slot? I don't think this would work unless the items are attached to the player. What if there are 3 players, two are viewing the furnace and the third breaks it? Which of the two gets the stuff? It would work for crafting tables since everyone has their own.

No, If you exit the INVENTORY then the item that you are holding goes into your offhand slot.
