I looked this up and saw some vague Ideas on it, here is my take:
A clay pot: 3 clay minimum.

It is clay so it can break if it falls a good distance and spills it's contents, it could be used for automatic traps: fill it with lava and put it in a dispenser in the roof, 1 pressure plate and the room floods.

You could also store flowers in it and use them for decoration with a quick retrieve ability for contents without opening an inventory window.
^This could also be used to an advantage as a trap, store valuables in a room full of pots and if an intruder in PVP chooses the wrong one the room it floods with lava.

It could be combined with TNT and a torch to become a grenade.

It could -occupying physical space and set health- be used for quite a few things and I am surprised such an item has not yet been added.

Yes, because Minecraft needs more decorative items. A flowerpot's a great idea as well.

Clay blocks is a harsh requirement. Maybe you could use 3 clay balls. Only issue I have with that is clay drops 4 clay balls, so you would have an extra clay that couldn't be used for anything. It breaks the 4,4,4 pattern for crafting things with clay.

If Notch were to use clay blocks, it should be like bowls and give you 4 pots. That would mean they would be stackable and that's a property that buckets don't have. Does the rarity of clay warrant the properties of a bucket plus more in a stackable object?? I say yes.

I'm talking about SMP. The server I play on you can barely find it anywhere.
