I needed a couple of quick examples for suggestions in a post I was making down in FD&I, and randomly used "volcano field" as one of them. The more I think about it, the more I want to see this in the game!
In real life, volcanoes don't always occur singly; instead, they can be part of volcano fields, which are large areas of lava rock, old volcanoes, new volcanoes, and related things. The more I think about it, the more I think it would be a good new biome for Minecraft, sort of a hot counterpart to the Ice Plains Spikes.
This would require a new block type -- Lava Rock. It would essentially be a retexture of Cobblestone. It has no special features; it's just for the visuals. Something like the Granite/Andesite/Diorite texture, but with a black/gray palette, would do nicely. (and would be awesome for building an evil lair out of!)
The biome itself would have numerous smallish active volcanoes (as distinct from the more usual suggestion of one really big volcano) and dead volcanoes. It would consist, of course, of lava rock, with pools of lava (both surface and underground), possibly lava pockets like in the Nether, plus patches, veins, or streaks of obsidian, and maybe some gravel here and there for visual interest. There would be no water. Caves would, of course, tend to have lavafalls, pools of lava, and so on contained within them.
A volcano would consist of a small mountain with a lava source block at the highest point, and a vertical line of lava source blocks directly underneath it going down until it intersects an underground lava pool (if it hits a cave or bedrock without finding one, put one there). For dead volcanoes, substitute obsidian.
Mostly, the Volcano Field biome would be a source of decorative resources, primarily lava rock.. It might make sense to increase ore spawn very slightly, as the larger number of underground lava pools will cut into the available area somewhat, and the considerably greater danger of mining there might counterbalance it a bit, but that would be for the people who adjust game balance to determine.
Lava Rock might also be craftable in some pattern involving lava and some other type of stone, but that's really secondary. It's a whole bunch of work, but if you need a few more blocks to finish up your evil lair, it might be worth it. Probably similar to Coarse Dirt.
Only if the lava happened to be adjacent to something flammable. Hm. Perhaps a "Volcano Field Edge" biome (similar to the ones for jungle, etc.) could exist, that would have only Lava Rock and no actual lava, as sort of a buffer between lava and trees/grass/whatever. It would certainly cut down on forest fires.
I have another question. Why did you call the block lava rock? Is it made or formed by lava? Will this biome bring fire everywhere if yes. Wouldn't it cause massive lag.

Hardened lava. Think of the stuff the Hawaiian Islands are made out of. I'd have just called it Basalt, but I'm married to a geologist who might see this and take exception for technical reasons.
Neat idea. Why not construct the biome out of obsidian in minecraft and take screenshots so we can see what it's supposed to look like.
Because I'm lazy?
If I was going to do that, I'd get a friend who's more clueful on texturing than I am to retexture some other block for me, and build it out of that. Which isn't a bad idea, actually. I'll add it to the queue of all the things I'm going to do when my shipment of round tuits arrives.
This would be a great addition to Minecraft, but my only worry is you wont have a easy way of farming wood while in it.
That's true of ice plains, deserts, and various other biomes, too. I envision it as a place you'd go just to get lava rock, obsidian, etc. If you really want trees, you'd have to bring some dirt from another biome.
I'm one of those people who builds hobbit holes in the sides of mountains -- I'd rather concentrate on building fun redstone stuff than making my place look good -- but if we ever got something like this, I would so build an evil lair! How could anyone not?
For that matter, if we had the lava rock (and maybe black sand, for beaches) you could build an awesome adventure map with a villain's evil volcano lair.

The solution is simple. Just install SPC in 1.7.10 then after that make the mountain.
Update: I consulted with my resident geologist, and it's legit to call the rock "basalt" -- though there are other kinds of rock that come out of volcanoes, too, about which I now know more than I really wanted to. So we can call the blocks Basalt if we want.
The idea is solid, I've always wanted something like this. Now it makes me want to build a volcano base on the server I play on. Support.

Finish your pirate base first.
The basalt block would look like this darkened andesite:
It would have the advantage, in an artistic sense, of being the "dark" part of the set where we already have "medium" (andesite) and "light" (diorite).
Most volcano suggestions are OP, shoot fire, and destroy almost everything. Your suggestion is well thought out and balanced. I really like the basalt block texture.

While I never use suggestions forum these days, this sounds really nice. Perhaps have the Magma Chambers under the vents that can be explored along with lava tubes?

Just build the darn thing already!

Sounds like a neat biome, and its blocks would be nice aesthetic-wise.

Here is a list of blocks I think should be added for lava fields
-Basalt
-Red Ash
-Black Ash
And several blocks that are already in the game should spawn there too
-Obsidian
-Ansedite

Figured it was time for a change.
