Why would you keep a farm of animals? Why not just kill them as soon as you find them?
Beeecause Minecraft isn't all about killing things?
Beeecause if you kill everything you see (including cows and chickens) it becomes incredibly hard to make the best healing item in the game (cake)?
Beeecause some people would rather act as farmers in their SMP server instead of the warrior?
You seem to be one of those "hard mode, only the night is any fun" kinda guys. To which I say, "You know you can ignore this functionality right? You're probably going to be holding a sword more often than having empty hands anyways."
You see a cow, acquire milk, kill it for its leather and leave. There is absolutely no reason to put it in a pen and then do this. Likewise with chickens, except now you have to wait for the egg to be hatched. There is absolutely no reason to put animals in a pen over killing them on the spot (well, maybe to keep chickens from wandering off, but I personally just dig a hole for them to fall into). You can farm by making an enclosed area with torches inside it, but the animals spawn right inside the pen and don't require you to move them at all, so moving animals is still pointless.
Also, I can ignore this functionality just as much as I can ignore jumping on enemies in Mario. I might do it once as a self imposed challenge, but you can't build the entire game on the expectation of self imposed challenges.
In my personal opinion, I agree with muncher21 that hugging creepers and animals is a bit eccentric. Especially a creeper. I think a creeper's motive is to stop you from destroying their world and continue on with their normal lives, so they wouldn't respond to love and affection (Think about it: You're in the middle of a forest, a bear is about to maul you, but with one small hug, it walks away happily.) Now, I like the climbing, but the rest... I'm not a big fan of.
Interesting, but it relies on the belief that Creepers are out to get you "to stop you from destroying their world".
You're free to do that. But personally I see creepers as beings that desperately want to find out about this new creature (you) and in their excitement, something biological in their body sets off and they explode.
Thing is, as is, only your belief can be humored or reinforced. Your belief can still work under this implementation, it just doesn't enforce yours over mine.
And the bear example doesn't quite work. A Poison dart frog would. It doesn't intentionally kill you, but by god, you screw up and it sure does.
@paradox
So then, instead of creating the option for others to do something, you'd rather limit people to do it exactly the same way you do?
And you can actually entirely ignore chickens, cows, and sheep and progress fine. You don't need leather (for damn near anything), and you can get everything for cake with patience and without killing anything.
Your insistence on killing everything is incredibly restricting.
Sure "Why not kill." is answered with "Well go ahead" but it shouldn't be "I want to farm" answered with "Why not kill?"
Scrap all the ideas before this hug things for hugs sake. you could get an indestructible barrier of love round you while you hug making you and who ever your hugging invincible. Also add SMP other player hugging able then there will be loving greifing.
@paradox
So then, instead of creating the option for others to do something, you'd rather limit people to do it exactly the same way you do?
What are you talking about? There is literally nothing else to do with animals besides kill them (in the case of cows, use bucket, in the case of chickens, wait for egg)
And you can actually entirely ignore chickens, cows, and sheep and progress fine. You don't need leather (for damn near anything), and you can get everything for cake with patience and without killing anything.
Correct. So why do we need to have hugging?
Your insistence on killing everything is incredibly restricting.
What in the world is it that you can do with animals that would require putting them in a pen first?
Sure "Why not kill." is answered with "Well go ahead" but it shouldn't be "I want to farm" answered with "Why not kill?"
But farming IS killing. There is no reason to put the animals in a pen before you kill them. You can make them spawn in a pen with torches, but you will NEVER need to force animals into a pen. Likewise for milk/eggs.
"Farming IS killing", no it's not. Farming involves caring for animals and keeping them around so that you can reuse them. Pigs not necessarily but it's relatively easy to code "if 2 tamed pigs within X meters of each other then produce baby pig to grow up". Sheep could regrow wool, cows could produce milk more and more likely the longer they've been tamed. Same thing for chickens.
Your insistence that "they should all die" because that's how YOU get their materials completely destroys the above option, along with NOT allowing anything to be built off of it.
Tamed animals though hugging? You can introduce pets. You can introduce breeding animals. You can introduce REQUIREMENTS to keep them tame (you do have to feed actual livestock).
Not allowing animals to be tamed? The game stagnates at what it currently is in relation to animals.
You don't want it to change because you don't see a use for it. Congratulations but you're now one of the most useless people in the suggestion forums. You aren't "This is bad because..." or even trying to critique it at all. You're basically just saying "The game is fine as is". Which is fine if you think it. But if you do, then get your ass out of the suggestion forum because if all you're going to say is "We don't need this" you're doing no one any good.
Now either continue trolling the suggestions with your "Nothing needs to change!" attitude and be ignored, get the hell out, or actually start critiquing ideas you don't like.
I think one of the problems with farming and minecraft is you don't need to wait to reuse animals. You can milk a cow three times in 3 seconds. In real life you would have to milk the cow then wait a day. In minecraft you can get all the milk you need and then just kill the cow to get the leather. There's really no need to farm. The only animal I would ever farm would be chickens, but I pick up enough eggs wandering around I wouldn't need to farm.

Muncher is right, listen to him, he can cure the blind and make paraplegics walk.
Well it can always be changed so that cows/chickens/sheep have a timer till their stuff is available again.
As is I think they just have a random % chance of dropping. I know that you don't always get milk when you try. (atleast last time I tried milking a cow)
But I think you can atleast see, muncher, the point that while currently you may as well kill them, enforcing that simply because you don't think farming is a good idea is ridiculous.

What the heck? This is an entirely different mechanic that you've yet to mention. Well, if that is the idea, than I support it. But just having animals follow you around and do nothing else is silly.
Your insistence that "they should all die" because that's how YOU get their materials completely destroys the above option, along with NOT allowing anything to be built off of it.

Now you're talking.

The idea is useless, there is no reason for it. I don't want the game being filled up with absolutely useless things such as these. If there was a more complicated system of farming, as you JUST NOW suggested, I'd be fine with that, but from what I see in the OP, nothing is worth adding.
You aren't "This is bad because..." or even trying to critique it at all.
Incorrect. As you notice, I did say "This is bad because..."
What are you talking about? There is literally nothing else to do with animals besides kill them (in the case of cows, use bucket, in the case of chickens, wait for egg)

This is critique. If you can't take it, get out. Nowhere did I say that the game is fine as it is, only that this would serve to make it worse, not better.
You're basically just saying "The game is fine as is".
When did I ever say that?
Now either continue trolling the suggestions

I defiantly support farming. I just wanted to clear up what he was trying to say.

I like this idea. The climbing thing is great, and I was thinking of right clicking with said non-right clicking item would allow you not to be pushed around in water currents as well. What's stopping him from using that hand to keep himself steady in a current?

the thing is, this doesnt lessen the threat that much. youd have to time it pretty well, just like you do to beat them down. its just a happy face alternative :smile.gif: if theres two of them youre still going to get blown to bits.
I actually just want to be able to hug people in SMP. Thaaat would be sweet. (But then, my significant other plays on the same server as me :tongue.gif:)
One-block-shimmying is awesome, but should be limited to certain blocks. Balance, you know?
And I definitely think you should be able to hug Creepers... It just wouldn't do ****.
