Currently in Minecraft, the closest thing to helping people with crafting is the Achievement System, which vaguely tells you a few recipes.
There is also the Wiki. But this can lead to spoilers for the game, or some people simply can't access it due to internet issues or some real-life restrictions.
This is why I suggest:
The In-Game Crafting Guide
Basic Overview
The Crafting Guide will allow people to see what they can craft in the game, depending on what they have discovered, and keep that knowledge for future use. It will allow people to easily and efficiently view crafting recipes without spoiling the future gameplay.
The Mechanics
Above the 2x2 crafting grid in your inventory will be a new button labeled "Crafting Recipes". (Picture Below)
Upon clicking this you will be taken to a screen similar to the Creative menu, with tabs for all the different types of items you can craft/furnace/brew/etc.
Note: The button won't work if there is something in the crafting grid, to stop accidents.
There is also a search bar similar to the Creative menu, but it will only show you recipes that you have fully unlocked.
First Part: The Unknown
At first, all the things you can craft will be marked with a black ?, meaning that you do not understand anything of any recipes.
Clicking on any of the items will reveal a crafting grid that has more black ? where items would go, and blank spaces where nothing goes.
Item names will be nothing but ? for each letter, giving no hints to what the item is.
Second Part: The Understanding
Upon getting an item in your inventory the Crafting Guide will show yellow ! instead of black ? for all recipes that have that particular item in it's recipe.
Clicking any items with yellow ! on them will show you all the items in the recipe you have in your inventory, and the rest of the items will be black ? as usual. The number of items you have in your inventory matters too.
For example if you pick up 1 stick, all recipes with a stick in it will go from ? to !. If you then look at the recipe for a wooden pickaxe, only the most top-left stick (In this case, the middle stick) would reveal itself as an item, while the other stick will still be a ?.
Item names will reveal themselves by a certain amount depending on how many items you've revealed.
Unfortunately, if you get rid of an item that is part of a locked recipe, it will revert back to a ? again until you get that item again, and the whole recipe will go back from ! to ? if all the correct items are removed from your inventory.
Final Part: The Unlocking
Once you have all the correct items at the correct amounts for a certain recipe, it will permanently reveal itself to you on the world you unlocked it on. The item's image, name and it's full crafting/furnace/brewing recipe will all show.
This Crafting Guide, along with Achievements and Statistics are per-world, so if you go on another world, any unlocked recipes will lock themselves again until you unlock them on that world.
Commands
This Crafting Guide also comes with a few commands, to customize how you want it to work.
/craftingguide [Player] [Item Name] unlock/lock
This will allow administrators to unlock or lock recipes for specific players.
That command will unlock the crafting recipe for a diamond sword for the player Notch.
/craftingguide [Player] all unlock/lock
Basically the above command, this will unlock/lock all recipes for a specific player.
/gamerule setCraftingGuide disable/enable/reveal
This changes access to the Crafting Guide for everyone.
disable: This completely prevents the Crafting Guide from revealing anything at all. It still keeps track of what players have/haven't unlocked, so doing this won't undo everyone's progress.
enable (default): This makes the Crafting Guide work like normal.
reveal: This makes the Crafting Guide unlock all recipes for everyone. It still keeps track of what players have/haven't unlocked, so putting it back to "enable" won't undo everyone's progress.
Benefits
• Allows easy access to crafting recipe knowledge without the need of internet access or information mods.
• Doesn't spoil things you haven't found yet, unless it's set to do so.
• Can allow specific recipes to be revealed for certain purposes.
• Can be turned off or completely ignored if you don't like it. It won't directly effect gameplay.
Problems
• Might spoil things easily if people look at a Crafting Guide set to "reveal".

Updates
• Changed the location of the crafting recipes button from the pause menu to above the 2x2 crafting grid. It won't work if there is something in the crafting grid, to prevent accidents.
Yeah, there definitely needs to be something that shows crafting in game. Having to look on a wiki is just plain bad game design, everything you need to know should be in game somehow. Almost any other game has some sort of tutorial/guide in game for making the stuff you need to actually play the game. Just because Minecraft didn't from the start means Notch was too lazy to put one in to begin with, not that there shouldn't be one. Perpetuating that mistake at this point is just ignorant. Of course, fanboys will complain that it would ruin the mystery of finding things by accident, which is also pretty dumb, it would relieve a lot of frustration on the part of most players. Your idea that you don't see the recipe until you have the stuff you need to make it is a very good one. That would make exploration and resource gathering a bit more fun, as you would need to collect stuff and see what you can make out of it as you go along. Of course, a response to the people who say it would be spoilers, the answer would be, "Don't click on that button then"
I like this idea, so support here. But instead of accessing from the pause menu, maybe a tab or button on the inventory / crafting menu would be more logical? Would make finding a recipe easier, either from the standpoint of not knowing it at all or just looking up something you've forgotten how to make.

I like it. It seems to be a way to unlock the recipes, and if you forget how to craft it, it will show up if you have already crafted it. I'm no modder, but someone really should make this a mod. However, I'd like to see brewing for this, too.
Thank you for the support!
P.S: It will also show you brewing too, provided you have the correct items. (Water Bottle and Nether Wart to show an Awkward Potion)

Great! I had some sort of idea for this, but it was really undeveloped, and used a book instead of the game. This is a great idea, especially the fact that you need to gather materials to figure it out.
When you get an item that can be crafted by something else, do you see questions marks for the recipe? When you craft something, the recipe is unlocked, right?
I love it! It might need a little adjusting to get it just right, but its mostly perfect Support

What exactly is there to spoil? And for those saying that "there being no how-to's in the game is bad game design" is a bit subjective depending the game. Many would argue that leaving everything up for the player to find elsewhere enhanced the experience. Though I still support the idea, but don't see it as a requirement.

This is interesting, and I like it. I've never really liked the idea of an in game guide, because I feel like it can take away from exploration and experimentation. But, I think this would be a good way for it to be added, and probably the only way.
I've looked and looked for a good suggestion on how to put in a crafting tutorial while still giving a feeling of exploration for... years now. This is the first one that I've seen that could work. It has my support.

If you get an item that can be crafted by something else (example: bread), yes you will still see question marks for the recipe, since if you didn't have the items needed to craft it, you wouldn't understand how it's craftable if you just find it.
You don't even have to craft the item for a recipe to unlock, simply having enough items in your inventory to craft it will unlock the recipe! Having 2 wooden planks and a stick in your inventory will unlock a wooden sword for example.
Yes, it is sort of what NEI already does, but this guide is designed to hide everything until you have the means to craft it. NEI however acts like what this guide would do when set to "reveal" mode by showing you everything which is what the default setting is trying to avoid.
Also NEI requires you to actually install the mod, which you might not be able to do for whatever reason.
What exactly is there to spoil? And for those saying that "there being no how-to's in the game is bad game design" is a bit subjective depending the game. Enchanting - Wait, THERE'S ENCHANTING?? Spoilers!
Mobs - They're everywhere
Trading - You can TRADE?! Spoilers!

e.t.c.
So on the main page of the wiki it already reveals some mid game information. Clicking on Items or Blocks will show you entire pages of blue links to many different aspects of the game, whether or not you have found them yet.
And I know some people would say leaving everything up to the player makes a better experience, but that's why personally you can completely ignore it or, if you really want to, prevent everyone from using it as well with commands.
Well that requires an internet connection (or at the very least, to minimize your game). This crafting guide is for if you don't have an internet connection, but mostly as a way to check recipes easily without requiring anything else.

read,look,click for recipes
But consulting the internet in place of a tutorial is a design flaw.
Support, we need a tutorial of some sort, and this seems to be a good way to do it.
