Have you ever been annoyed when placing things like pistons or wooden logs? Do you wish you could place them more easily without having to move around nearly as much? Well then this suggestion is for you.
(I would like to thank FyberOptic, the creator of the Redstone Paste Mod, for inspiring me to make this suggestion, which is partially based off the way you place sticky Redstone components in the mod.)
I'm suggesting that, for blocks which can be placed directionally, such as droppers, hoppers, logs, pistons, repeaters, comparators, quartz/purpur pillars, stairs, etc., that instead of the standard block highlight you see for other blocks, you would be able to place the blocks directionally... similar to the way the Redstone Paste mod allows you to place the sticky redstone components. To avoid any conflicts with how directional blocks are currently placed, this advanced placing mode would be activated while holding down the CTRL key. For example, while holding down CTRL, if you were looking at the top of a block and wanted to place a piston, you could place the piston facing north, east, south, or west, as well as up, if you clicked in the center of the block. Placing a piston (while holding CTRL) by right-clicking the side of the block would allow for placing it facing you, away from you, down, up, as well as away from the block you are placing it on, depending on where you click.
BENEFITS:
Placing directional blocks would be a lot easier, as you could now place blocks facing in a lot more directions than just facing you. If you placed a block on top of a block, you would be able to place it facing north, south, east, west, and up. If you placed it on the bottom you would be able to place it facing north, south, east, west, and down. If you placed it on the side of a block you would be able to place it facing towards or away from you, up, down, and away from the block.
This would open up the possibility for other additions not part of this suggestion involving Redstone, rails, etc., allowing you to force which direction you want something to be placed if you need to.
Because the special placement system would only work when CTRL is held down, this wouldn't conflict with how players normally place blocks.
This would open up the possibility of, as well as make easier the implementation of, better Redstone placement, another interesting suggestion which would be made more feasible by this topic's addition. You would be able to place similar to the Redstone Paste in the Redstone Paste mod, although in this case there would be no sticky Redstone, as it would be regular Redstone that gets changed. This would require more than one block to hold all the metadata states that would now exist for all the different ways Redstone dust could be placed, but that's another suggestion for another topic.
Another possibility this would open up would be sideways stairs, since stairs placement could now be affected by both the face and part of the face of the block you right-click on. And this could also mean vertical slabs as well! (Though I would guess that the vertical variants of slabs may have to be a different technical block in the code due to the metadata already being used up in the current slab technical blocks.) This even opens up the possibility for glass panes & iron bars on their side, as well as horizontal levers on walls, sideways trapdoors, as well as other potential building possibilities.
(And yes, I used the Redstone Paste Mod in those pictures to show what the highlight selection might/would look like.)

Your idea has no flaws and nothing to discuss, so it should be posted on the suggestion subreddit instead, so that Mojang can see it.
Well you may think that, and I'm glad you like my idea so much, but I'm not posting anything on the Minecraft Reddit until I know for sure that everyone else agrees that this idea is flawless.

I would love to have better directional placement. It would definitely make building structures more interesting. If stairs could be turned sideways to fit in a corner between 2 columns instead of only right side up or upside down. Also to be able to rotate carpet pieces to create custom designs in a full carpeted floor. I currently own all 3 Playstation versions and the PC but I play mainly on the Playstations.

Nice idea. Simillar to the idea for inverted slab placement.
I could see mojang implementing it without the visible highlight though, and possibly just replace the current placement logic.

*a few moments later...*
Argh my pictures all broke. I'll fix them...

You might want to just upload them to imgur.

I'll look into getting an account on there.
Until then I've updated the images and added a link to the gallery in case they break again.
EDIT: Nevermind, the images are already broken. XD Better get an imgur account or something quick.

You can upload stuff there without needing an account. They also give you a link to delete them. The account just makes things more convenient.
Edit: Also they're still broken. I think you have to share the images before anyone can see them.

Full support this seems like a much better system than is currently in vanilla.
Not really much to say, there's nothing wrong with this suggestion.

Although this Suggestion is a tad old.
About the only negative thing I could say is that it doesn't feel very Minecrafty. However, the utility is far too great for me to care that much.
This has my support.

I had a different idea on how this might be done, but yours is definitely far better.
Mine was to simply base it solely on which side of the block you are clicking.
