I agree, there not much better then torches and it takes 9 dust and most of the dust you mine falls into the lava. So id have to say make it four instead of nine.
As it being a novelty item, a very cool block, that glows, and hurts mobs, it's fine.
It doesn't hurt mobs, as far as I know.
But as a required element for permanent light? It's completely unbalanced. It takes me hours, dangerous as hell hours mind you, to get like 10 to 15 blocks
The nether is supposed to be a risky place, but I guess I have to agree on this one.
it also takes, tons of cobblestone, to make towers to safely get to it, it takes tons of wood, for said tools,
Use a cheaper matierial like sand, and just harvest the glowstone with your bare hands.
it takes tons of food, and arrows, and the Ghasts have absolutely TOO much range compared to you, either the Ghast range needs to be halved, or we need a crossbow.
This just isn't balanced at all in my opinion
Unless you're doing a hard mode challenge, it doesn't really matter if you switch to peaceful. If you're against peaceful diffuculty, just switch to 3rd-person-veiw and the ghasts miss more often.

I suggest we adopt a xenophobic attitude towards this clearly deadly threat.
We need to quarantine any infected individuals to prevent this plague from gaining a foot-hold.
More like "How dare Notch ruin the game for everyone who doesn't want to go to the Nether for permanent light"
Seriously can the hardcore Minecraft people ever think about anyone other than themselves. There are people who don't want to go to the nether everytime they want to light something up. Besides turning it into glowstone from glowstone dust is a ripoff of glowstone. so you can't store it efficiently.
Strawmanning a group of people who have gotten better at a game than you sure is fun, isn't it? No, it's not. Not all of us are selfish or are as bad as you describe us. Don't do that please. It's kind of really annoying and insulting.
Use a torch (they are easier to make and don't clip with other blocks or you), or use INVedit if it's that much of a problem and you need a lot of Glowstone. Glowstone is a special material, and as stupid and unrewarding as it is to collect and get, a lot of these problems can be solved with general common sense. I agree that it is hard to get, but with the OP is going about it, it sounds like less of an idea on how to improve Glowstone, and more of a complaint because the game should be easier. If he would give some better points on how to improve it, it wouldn't attract so much flak, and also not make assumptions on hypothetical points. Notch didn't say anywhere "Lanterns are being made, they will be made out of a block of Glowstone". He is basing his thread on "*IF*". He should've just made this a normal suggestion.
In general, people complaining about the game in Suggestions in any way tends to annoy people so it would be best to stick with the ideas and not talk about your personal experiences on said things.
Don't collect ores on difficulties you can't handle. If ghasts are blowing you apart, put in on peaceful to collect Glowstone, and use Netherstone scaffolding, since its everywhere. There is no shame in turning off mobs to stop them from destroying things you are trying to collect.
As much as it is a pain to build scaffolding over a lava lake to get glowstone, it's generally fruitless to do that anyway, since there are safer areas to collect it anyway.
stop going for all of the hard ores. It's the same thing if Diamond ore was spawned above some lava. You have to be careful, and not assume the entire world should bend around you so you can get everything awesome without any risk or challenge. Most people hate the risk and challenge part of the game, which I will not address.

Seriously I might leave Minecraft if I'm forced to go to the Nether in SMP just to get a permanently light source unless glowstone gives me 15-20 pieces per block.
Shitty reason to quit Minecraft if you ask me. Obsidian takes way too long to get and I am sick of how the lava under it burns it up, but I won't quit minecraft just because of that. That would be a waste of time, money, and generally be pathetic. Quitting the game because Notch lied about being the creator of minecraft or allowing Minecraft to access your personal information and use it to send advertisements to you against your will would be better reasons to quit.
Ask the OPs to give you some Lightstone/Glowstone. If they don't want to, then, they are kind of a bunch of assholes if you ask me.
And the Nether will probably never be implemented into SMP until all of the bugs with the Overworld are fixed first.
Obsidian takes way too long to get and I am sick of how the lava under it burns it up, but I won't quit minecraft just because of that.
Dump a block of water near it so it flows over the obsidian you want. That way any lava will just turn into more obsidian and not burn your hard earned blackrock. (not to mention waste 1 use of a diamond pick... I don't know why but diamond is so hard to find for me ><) :sad.gif:
Edit: I've changed my mind. I do actually want some form of Glowstone generating. I'm mining ginormous quantities of the stuff at the moment. I have a feeling that I'll have to scour every ****ing crevice in the whole damn Nether before I finish building my city. Glowstone only spawns once, so once I mine it all, I'm owned...
I recently adapted that tactic. Thank you.
Well I guess if Glowstone did grow and generate it would be nice, but only in the nether. Having a Glowstone lamp start mutating in your house would cause problems, and having a 600 block path of them suddenly growing to monstrous proportions would be bothersome (yup, I went through the trouble of collecting enough dust to make 600 Glowstone, which is probably why manual collection doesn't bug me). So I guess if there was a way to create Glowstone farms in the Nether (which are a bit iffy, but I guess wouldn't be too bad) it would make returning to the nether more enjoyable.
This doesn't make the game easier, only more convenient. Torches are already the far superior lighting choice being that they don't take up a block of space, can be made on your first day, provide more or less the same lighting, and can be made IN MUCH MUCH MUCH BIGGER NUMBERS. That said GS is simply for decor, but even then why gather 9 dusts?
They need to make it so 4 dusts=block or so any GS block can drop 1-3 dusts. Also, there needs to be a separate GS block that you craft that is exactly the same, but you can pick it up.
So I guess I missed the patch that made glowstone blocks the only permanent light sources?
hahaaha so did i it seems, my netherack, and torches and lanterns(pumpkins) dont seem to fade??? -.-
as for your ghast problem.... ever tried using a fishing rod?
as for it being to hard... because getting diamonds mining obsidian, setting up portals is sooo easy compared right?
minecraft is: 40% mine 50% craft and 10% effort (ITS IN THE NAME)
what about the new players if torches run out quickly then new player who barely know about the game go to sleep in their big wooden house then suddenly the torches run out and creepes and everything come and skrew them glow stone should be accessibly easier such as if you dig in the netherack you could find veins of glowstone

Here's an idea: make it so that if you put a a certain block above a block on fire, and after a while it turns into glowstone!
Who bothered to bump this? I could see bumping something if you wanted the same change but they already made it a lot easier to get. Sure it isn't infinite but it's better than it was.

Its supposed to be hard to get.... If you can't take the challenge, then go back to the regular world and figure something else out.
i disagree. i mean u can just mine a few netherack and not use cobble? i personally use glowstone a lot for my island bases its not rare and it can be used underwater.
glow stone is so easy to get, its like steeling candy from a baby. since the up date i have it every where. it was so much better before. when it was hard to get everyone was like "WOW GLOW STONE" now its like "meh" i consider diamond and gold much more valuable

Good god in heaven, please tell me this person is being sarcastic. If so, I'm going to sound like an idiot, but Imma take that risk.
If these new players run out of torches, I hardly think they'll even have the resources required to get to the Nether.
Getting glowstone is one of the only marginal challenges left, and even then, ghasts's aims are so off that unless they're really close, (at which point you can just use a fishing pole) then you're going to be fine. If ghasts had better aim, then THAT would be a challenge, that I would certainly take. You can also simply dig for a while in one direction until you reach a depsoit of glowstone, and then be very careful to put walls around you. Also, I think Notch said somewhere that he had scrapped the lantern idea. And even if he hadn't, he never said lanterns would use glowstone.
NO. Don't click New Thread. Read the rules. I don't give a damn how long or boring they are. If you do not, you will be subject to massive flaming and criticism by yours truly.

Or when Notch releases finite torches, take 2 minutes to mod it back to infinite.

Notch was planning to make torches go out at some point. He never stated that glowstone would be a requirement for lanterns.
Notch has probably scraped the idea, anyway. Just let this thread go back to being dead until such time as it actually applies to Minecraft.
Mostly moved on. May check back a few times a year.
I think you meant "fittest".
