I've read, and been told by 2 people, that glowstone hurts mobs,
"Glowstone also has the unique property of harming skeletons and zombies; making spiders docile (like sunlight); and detonating creepers (like fire). This could possibly be used to make mob traps with floors of glowstone. "
That is from Minepedia, obviously if it is wrong, we need to let them know.
Complete ********. I've got a fair amount of the stuff lying around, and it doesn't do anything at all except give off light. I've never seen it do so, and its never been properly reported so. I demand video proof of this.
I've been told straight up and down, that Notch said glowstone would be needed for lanterns, It IS unbalanced you fool. You have to find diamond, get obsidian, make a gate, struggle to obtain just a few dozen units of glowstone dust, and make, SWEET JESUS HERE IS COMES, like 4 or 5 blocks. As a novelty, I said it was fine. You obviously didn't read that.
It may or may not. The community is TERRIBLE when it comes to the loss of their precious torches, and will snatch at every single goddamn straw they can to bend the argument their way. Notch did make a throwaway comment on twitter once about PERHAPS going to the nether for lanterns, and since then people have whined constantly. It's not a fact.
And like I said, as of now glowstone is JUST a novelty, and will probably continue to be so. Specualting otherwise lends nothing to the discussion.
The point of the thread, was that if glowstone becomes required for lanterns, it will automatically become insanely unbalanced, do you realize how hard the game will become without permanent light? And you cannot just put pools of lava all over the place. Maybe for an outside area, but it risks burning down your ****.
You can also have jack-o-lanterns for light, infinatley burning logs and, as you said, lava. Just having a stone fireplace makes it easy to contain these. It would be harder, but not impossible. And beyond that is more useless speculation about lanterns.
You sir need to watch you mouth and read and understand the post, I've put easily over 100 hours into this game, If I think something is unbalanced, it's from dozens of hours of observation, not just, "t00 h4rd LOL" like some noob. I don't just complain for the ****ing joy of it. I posted a legitament complaint, IF in the future the game uses glowstone for lanterns.
I don't think I need to watch my mouth. I saw a comment that has been hashed and rehashed dozens of times by people who don't think things out or research their claims. This appears no different. You've made claims that are unverified and based your argument around that.
As of right now, it's fine, although I DO believe ghasts are slightly unfair, due to the fact they have like 3 times the range of your bow, SKILL cannot fix that, it's all chance, are you lucky enough for them to get close? Oh wait, no, they'll just stay away and blast your little house to bits. That is rather retarded, it's not a challenge if I cannot even hit them. I don't want it to be easy, but right now they can blast you from like a mile away, and you can't do jack **** about it.
Cobblestone is amazingly easy to get, and breaking the ghasts line of sight for even a second behind a 1x1x2 pillar will stop them shooting. They are irritating, but not impossible if you are cunning.
I can live with the ghasts, as unfair as it feels, but the glowstone as lanterns, would be a terrible idea, I hope Notch does something else.
As I said, this is pure speculation. I agree that it would be difficult, but I could live with it.
I think the biggest flaw in all of your reasoning is the belief that *IF* lanterns require glowstone to make, that Notch would be foolish enough to require an entire block of glowstone rather than simply using one or more pieces of glowstone dust. You've made it unbalanced in your own mind. It isn't like making an diamond pick requires you to make 3 full blocks of diamond - it just requires 3 diamonds. With this in mind, the amount of glowstone dust you could collect from a single cluster should net you enough lanterns to be pretty fairly balanced if we are to think that lanterns exist because Notch feels permanent light sources should be difficult enough to require going to the Nether to gather materials for.
Also, a passing comment from Notch that lanterns might require materials from the Nether does not in itself imply that it will be the only source of permanent light when this happens. Most structures that are larger than a thin tunnel require a ridiculous amount of torches to keep everything lit. Making the most essential light source (the only one that you will be able to craft for a long time until you can mine other materials) into something that runs out would be a terrible idea, and likely will not happen.
When it happens, lanterns will probably not replace torches, and are more likely to be some sort of portable light source as lanterns often are.

I'm almost 100% positive that this have been suggested before but i'll suggest it again anyways
Sounds like all you need to do is make Glowstone more common in the Nether, and as for Ghasts yeah there a pain but I think there fine. I do wish we could create guns, and those could reach the Ghasts, but since most of their stuff drops in Lava we need a way to draw them in.
One of my recent game I got screwed. My portal connected almost at bedrock underneath a lava pool over 100 blocks in diameter, and I was almost at the center of it. Everywhere I dug up, lava came down.
Glowstone has the perfect value for what it is; a fancy bauble of no particular importance. It has no current special characteristics, other than its inherent rarity. JackOLanterns emit the same level light, and are far easier to obtain. Glowstone cannot hurt mobs, and fire cannot detonate creepers. It can pacify spiders, but torches can also do that.
In addition, glowstone is easy enough to gain in useable quantities.
Ghasts have pretty terrible aim, die quickly, and, if minepedia is to be believed, can be distracted simply by entering third person. The lava is no biggie if you wire sneak to the capslock, and you can make towers out of sand and dirt if cobblestone is to expensive for you, though, considering stone is both the most common natural resource and can be infinitely generated with some lava and water, I doubt that.
In addition, Notch never even confirmed glowstone as an ingredient for lanterns, or even that you need top go to the Nether to make them. "You may have to go to the Nether to craft them" not only fails to imply glowstone, it's not even a confirmation of the Nether as part of the process. I personally think he was implying netherrack as an ingredient, since it burns forever and is easily available once you get some iron to make buckets.
Take a few breaths, and consider drinking a whole caffeinated beverage before you next post. It'll make life easier on everyone.
1- Yea 4 Glowstone dust should = 1 Glowstone Block not 9.
2 - We need more ranged weapons the bow is fine for taking down one or two monsters, but instead of making them Sticks and string only lets make them also be made from stone, iron, gold, diamond, or some other material, with the bonus being more range and damage with better materials.
3 - Whenever the torches burn out patch comes out I don't think glowstone dust should be required to make lanterns, but something else, maybe just make laterns be made from other stuff, like maybe this

and let them be like a redstone torch where default state is on, but they could be hooked to redstone wiring and a switch for lights we can flick on and off
NO ONE EVER SAID PERMANENT LIGHT WOULD REQUIRE GLOWSTONE SO QUIT BITCHING PLEASE
Honestly I don't know how this rumor started. Notch never said it would. Also you can build a nether portal on your first day. We had a competition on a SMP server and someone made a portal In 12 minutes. Then another person finished in 15. Then 17. It;'s really easy to make a portal if you put your mind to it. And then there is plenty of lightstone in the nether once you get there. But it doesn't matter because LANTERNS WON'T REQUIRE LIGHTSTONE

Muncher is right, listen to him, he can cure the blind and make paraplegics walk.
As it being a novelty item, a very cool block, that glows, and hurts mobs, it's fine.
But as a required element for permanent light? It's completely unbalanced. It takes me hours, dangerous as hell hours mind you, to get like 10 to 15 blocks, it also takes, tons of cobblestone, to make towers to safely get to it, it takes tons of wood, for said tools, it takes tons of food, and arrows, and the Ghasts have absolutely TOO much range compared to you, either the Ghast range needs to be halved, or we need a crossbow.
This just isn't balanced at all in my opinion.
My little brother can get a stack in 1 hour....Without all the trouble you went through....
All he needs is:
64 Cobblestone
1 Pickaxe of any type
0 Food
1 shovel of any type
That is ALL he needs, and he is 10 years old...
(by the way cobblestone is invincible to ghast blasts)
I expect Lanterns with either require 1 netherrack or 1 Glowstone dust. not block.
Also, I speculate that torches will only go out on a higher realism setting (Notch has mentioned a slider to ajust realism) Or on Hardcore mode (Also mentioned by notch) That way, the Hardcore players would be happy, and the note-so-hardcore players would be happy. Except for a few trolls. Keep in mind that I have notching to base these off of, so you can't say, "You idiot, what do you have to base that off of?!?" Nothing, It's just speculation.
Also, I use "Mentioned" as an in-between space between ''hinted" and ''confirmed''.
I don't know what difficulty you all play on, but in my nether, glowstone is extremely difficult to retrieve. I must build insanely large structures, which is difficult, seeing as how I am using all cobblestone for my mega castle, not even that, I am not going to waste it in the nether. BUT even if I use it, it's still insane. I have to make massive bridges, dozens of blocks long, and dozens of blocks tall to get to, and keep the glowstone from falling to a melting fate.

Well, given that your entire argument has pretty much been negated, it falls down to a matter of your skill in aquiring lightstone. If you're not the best at it, then it's not our problem. Lots of people find it easy, some don't. There's no point bitching about it, and nothing anyone can do about it.
I play on hard, and it's not incredibly hard to get. I've died a lot, but suceeded more than I've failed.

Casual reminder, the difficulty has absolutely NO effect on block spawning. It effects mob spawning, damage amounts, and health regeneration. Nothing else.
If you like, I can post a screenshot for you, but I don't think it's necessary. Built a nether gate in a random location, went into the nether, and just looked around. Pockets of glowstone all over the place. They're common and very obvious, and they are supposed to be a little bit challenging to get. The entire Nether is supposed to be challenging.

Yes, it is hard to get. But no, it is not the only source of permenant light.
Flint & Steel + Netherrack = trolololo infinite light.
I can't believe there are 2 pages of discussion on this issue and no one has brought up Glowstone Sand
It's also already implemented in the Extended 2x2 Crafting mod
