As it being a novelty item, a very cool block, that glows, and hurts mobs, it's fine.
But as a required element for permanent light? It's completely unbalanced. It takes me hours, dangerous as hell hours mind you, to get like 10 to 15 blocks, it also takes, tons of cobblestone, to make towers to safely get to it, it takes tons of wood, for said tools, it takes tons of food, and arrows, and the Ghasts have absolutely TOO much range compared to you, either the Ghast range needs to be halved, or we need a crossbow.
This just isn't balanced at all in my opinion.

More like "How dare Notch ruin the game for everyone who doesn't want to go to the Nether for permanent light"
Seriously can the hardcore Minecraft people ever think about anyone other than themselves. There are people who don't want to go to the nether everytime they want to light something up. Besides turning it into glowstone from glowstone dust is a ripoff of glowstone. so you can't store it efficiently. Seriously I might leave Minecraft if I'm forced to go to the Nether in SMP just to get a permanently light source unless glowstone gives me 15-20 pieces per block.
It's not that it's hard, it's horribly unbalanced. Ghasts have like epic MAN range, and you don't. I have to travel to hell
JUST for a lantern? Come on now, i like a challenge, but I've only gotten about maybe 200 glowstone dust, WITHOUT needing a tower, 50 more with a tower, and i had to waste several stacks of other resources, like I said.
We need a crossbow. or better yet, make glow-stone drop like 2 or 3 at LEAST.

It doesn't hurt mobs, what the **** are you smoking?
Its a NOVELTY item, like clay. It's a prestige item, and it takes time, effort and hard work to earn.
Sure, it's a waterproof light source, but so are jack-o-lanterns. It's not a 'required element for permentant light'. Torches are still permenant, and will be for a long time. When/if they are replaced with lanterns, nobody ****ing knows WHAT they will be made of, so you can't whine about it now.
You're just complaining for the sake of complaining. It's not unbalanced, its a difficult item to get. You have to work for it, and that's how it is.

Keep it clean. Your point becomes less and less meaningful the more you make yourself sound like an angry troll. But yeah, I agree with you anyway.

I've read, and been told by 2 people, that glowstone hurts mobs,
"Glowstone also has the unique property of harming skeletons and zombies; making spiders docile (like sunlight); and detonating creepers (like fire). This could possibly be used to make mob traps with floors of glowstone. "
That is from Minepedia, obviously if it is wrong, we need to let them know.
I've been told straight up and down, that Notch said glowstone would be needed for lanterns, It IS unbalanced you fool. You have to find diamond, get obsidian, make a gate, struggle to obtain just a few dozen units of glowstone dust, and make, SWEET JESUS HERE IS COMES, like 4 or 5 blocks. As a novelty, I said it was fine. You obviously didn't read that.
The point of the thread, was that if glowstone becomes required for lanterns, it will automatically become insanely unbalanced, do you realize how hard the game will become without permanent light? And you cannot just put pools of lava all over the place. Maybe for an outside area, but it risks burning down your ****.
You sir need to watch you mouth and read and understand the post, I've put easily over 100 hours into this game, If I think something is unbalanced, it's from dozens of hours of observation, not just, "t00 h4rd LOL" like some noob. I don't just complain for the ****ing joy of it. I posted a legitament complaint, IF in the future the game uses glowstone for lanterns.
As of right now, it's fine, although I DO believe ghasts are slightly unfair, due to the fact they have like 3 times the range of your bow, SKILL cannot fix that, it's all chance, are you lucky enough for them to get close? Oh wait, no, they'll just stay away and blast your little house to bits. That is rather retarded, it's not a challenge if I cannot even hit them. I don't want it to be easy, but right now they can blast you from like a mile away, and you can't do jack **** about it.
I can live with the ghasts, as unfair as it feels, but the glowstone as lanterns, would be a terrible idea, I hope Notch does something else.

Alright, these points right here. So you've played hundreds of hours of Minecraft, right? Then clearly your vast amounts of experience and knowledge have afforded you at some point the discovery that water+lava=obsidian if the conditions are right? If you actually plan your building, you can get to the Nether with nothing but a wooden pickaxe and at least 4 iron (for a bucket and some flint and steel). Sure you wouldn't be the most prepared when you get there, but it's possible.
And then the ghasts. Keep in mind that they must have a line if sight to attack you. This means that any sort of wall between you and then prevents them from seeing you, and thus prevents them from attacking. They can be annoying at times, but they are hardly unfair. If you really must attack them back, learn to fire an arrow correctly, or learn to hit their fireballs.
And getting to the glowstones. Do you not realize how incredibly, stupidly easy it is to fill chest upon chest with cobblestone just from digging a mine? Until I started building a huge sea castle, I didn't know what to do with all of it. I'm pretty sure that's more than enough to build some scaffolding to the glowstone.

I just think such a stanard part of the game shouldn't require a trip to the wiki to figure out how to make it. I mean you would need to look up how to ake a portal, because you wouldn't have any idea that such a thing as the nether existed. also I believe you shouldn't have to spend hours and hours at the game to get a permanent light source. It is the newbies who are going to need it the most, not us people who know what we're doing.

Guess I missed it too. So far none of my torches have gone out, normal or redstone. And I'm pretty sure my lava pools are still giving off light.
