Gnolls: New Shielded Mobs
Appearance:
Gnolls are humanoid creatures which resemble hyenas. They are the same size as the player, carry a shield in their offhand, and use either a sword or an axe in their main hand. The shield is blank. The weapon they hold is made of wood, but if the local difficulty is high enough, they may spawn with armor or stone and iron weapons.
Statistics:
Gnolls have 36 health (18 hearts). They deal 5 damage (before adding in the damage from its weapon) to the player on easy, 7 damage on normal, and 9 on hard. Gnolls are slightly faster than zombies and skeletons. They are rare mobs, spawning as often as witches.
Behavior:
Gnolls will target any player within 30 blocks of itself, and will rush at the player if the player is not within melee range. If the player is within melee range, the gnoll will circle and attack the player 1-2 times before blocking for 2 seconds. The gnoll attacks as fast as the weapon it is holding. Occasionally, the gnoll will either sprint and attempt a knockback attack if holding an axe, or jump and attempt a critical attack if holding a sword. While blocking, the gnoll will turn to face the player. Holding a bow while in the gnoll's range will cause it to block more often.
Drops:
Gnolls give 10 xp. Common drops are 1-4 leather. Uncommon drops are its shield, armor, or weapon.

Why do we need this mob? Specifically to have a shield? This is an interesting idea, but hopefully zombies, pigmen, skeletons and wither skeletons will gain the ability to spawn with/pick up shields.
I don't think we need a brand new mob just to use a shield. I know we have zombies and skeletons, but gnolls just seems like something you'd find in a generic fantasy RPG. Overall, this is just a touch/melee mob but can use a shield, it's not very unique.

It would seem a lot of the comments agree that instead of a new mob, shields should just be used by old mobs. I get what you guys are saying, however to me it just wouldn't seem plausible for existing mobs to use shields. For one thing, you don't really see archers with shields, because they use two hands, so skeletons are out. Zombies constantly track you, so it would be difficult to get behind them, especially if a large horde had quite a few shield zombies. Also, giving shields to wither skeletons or zombie pigman would just make them more difficult than they already are, with their high damage.
I think a new, unique mob should be added, like how they added the shulker, in order to use the shields. And, I really like your idea. Since this mob would have a shield, it wouldn't make sense for it to have high damage, so wielding a wood sword is plausible. It should also have a new charge attack, that makes even more use of the shield and allows you to jump out of the way and hit it from behind.
Overall, I like the presentation and concept of you new mob. Ignore everyone else, a shield-wielding knoll would be an awesome addition to Minecraft.

The reason why I think that gnolls should be added to represent shields is that none of the other mobs seem like they need shields.
Zombies aren't smart enough to use shields effectively, and can already summon other zombies to help. Skeletons already use two hands for the bow, and even if they could use shields, the shield would not be of much use to it. Skeleton archers just can't counterattack quickly enough after blocking with the shield. Zombie pigmen also wouldn't have much use for a shield. Their main strength comes from their numbers and speed, so a zombie pigman slowing down to block while the rest of the pigmen attack the player would be pointless. Wither skeletons already apply a deadly wither effect, and can just hide behind their shield while you wither away, making them even more powerful than they already are.

It would be interesting to see a mob holding a shield, but programming in a new mob just for the sake of that isn't innovative, that's subjective at best. If the mob had more unique features (and maybe wasn't a gnoll, but that's just me) then I could get on board.
Zombies are smart enough to call their brethren, pick up items and siege the hell out of villagers. Maybe zombies could pick up shields as they would any other item, and it still offers them protection as the zombie just so happens to be holding it upright, giving that damage reduction from the front.

yes i agree, i like gnolls, and yes zombie are kinda stupid, and skeletons use 2 arms, other mobs are just dangerous, so gnoll is a great mob to solve this. But i think they would have less hearts and have great armor and weapons, then they are archers, warriors, and tanks, and resist magic. and they drop bones, leather, shield, armor, weapons, and gnoll fang or gnoll fur,
Gnoll fang and gnoll fur, u can use to make gnoll amulet, with magic resistance. and this amulet is an item that can broke after a certain amount of magic damage.
I think minecraft need magic resistance or something
To start, I'm not sure if you have made your mind up on how fast this creature moves. I also think that receiving 13 xp points is a little excessive, but i don't mind the leather drops. Apart from these points, I don't feel that Minecraft really needs any more hostiles atm. On the flip side, I like the sound of a haunting looking hyena-humanoid (brings a picture of a werewolf to mind), and the name, Gnoll, is kinda cool too.

In single player, the axes' ability to stun shields is useless, as there are no mobs that use shields. A mob that uses a shield would let the axes' shield stun ability be useful, and since skeletons need two hands to draw their bow back, and a shield would just slow down a zombie, an already slow mob.

I support this, but I think the Gnolls should be a Swamp specific mob.
