There should be a new Item called "chain links". Crafting would be 2 iron ingots, flattened down horizontally, yielding 8 "chain links". Then you can use this Item to chain 2 Minecarts together!
If you are holding a chain, then right-click one of the minecarts that already links to another, then it will use another chain to allow another Minecart to be chained with it, making a longer train. If you want to remove a chain from a minecart, hold the sneak button, then right-click the side that you want to remove the chain from. If you want to get in a minecart that is linked, don't hold a "chain links" in your hand and right click it.
This kind of replaces the shunting system of the furnace minecart. The minecarts will be linked like the leashing system, yet a bit newer. It will pull them when they are closer (say 1.5 blocks away) so that it won't un-link from going up/down/turning rails.
BONUS: Put 3 chain links flattened horizontally on a crafting table to make "chains". With this, you can finally make Chainmail Armor!
REASON FOR NEEDING THIS:
Better Minecart Linking System (Duh)
Makes maps MUCH easier to make when involving Minecarts
Finally a recipe for Chainmail Armor!
It can be easy for Mojang to make this.
If you have some concerns, see to it that you tell me, and we'll see what we can do about it. I'm sorry if there was any other threads asking for this, I didn't find any like this.

I like the idea of linking minecarts together, but I prefer the idea of using leads to link them together. I also don't like chainmail being craftable, I personally believe Minecraft needs more uncraftable, rare drop items.

Think of real life: would you use a leash to keep minecarts together? It can break easier than chains, and in minecraft, leashes would require a LOT of distance before it even starts pulling it. You want a short distances, like with real trains. they have chains pulling other carts (mainly shipping carts). think of a leash pulling THOSE things.
thinking of that, I actually want to see that happen.
EDIT: forgot about the chainmail part. I like your thinking about the uncraftability, but it wouldn't hurt to have 4 more things be craftable (the whole set of armor)
Just in case you guys didn't know, just like to say that while it is uncraftable, chain armor is repairable, by using iron with it in an anvil. So it's basically get it once and you can have chainmail forever. Just letting you know

And you can do that on any bit of armor. but for every repair, the price spikes up, making it limited. I don't think anyone would want to repair chainmail for 64 XP Levels.

Well yeah but chainmail is just for looks. It's worse than gold armor. It is far beaten by iron and diamond. And with this recipe it would cost more than iron armor. Nobody's gonna be repairing chainmail more than once

Dang... you're right. How would we get a recipe then? WAIT! They could make chainmail be just (if not, then close to) as much durability as iron, for the same cost. Say, the 2 ingots would yield 6 "chain links" instead? Making those 6 together would yield 2 "chains", so 2 iron ingots = 2 "chains."
EDIT: Wait, figured out what you are saying. oops. Well then, just increase durability for chainmail, or the recipe for "chain links" would yield 12 "chain links" instead. But then minecarts would be crazy with attaching.

Yeah I don't think there's a way to mix the two parts without one side being unbalanced

Unless we got rid of "chains" and just used "chain links" instead. "Chain links" will make armor instead. We could rename "chain links" to "chains" then. A bit fairer, eh?

Still though it's just gonna be a worse version of iron armor, that costs about the same. It'll sorta ruin the coolness of chain armor

Actually the chain armour is almost the same as gold, only the pants giving some more protection.
If anyone wants to know, there is a way to link minecarts together! I've been experimenting with it and I'm calling it SteamCarts! I think I'm going to do a thread on it soon if anyone is interested...
I'd like to see that. Please leave a link in here once you've made it

Anyway, I only support the chain links.

As a matter of fact, chain is actually better than gold I believe. But it's worse than iron, and seeing as it's still crafted with iron...

what do you guys think about the 2 iron ingots recipe yielding 3 chains, then? better than gold, worse than iron, you get more chains out of the iron.
