This is a great idea, except for the fact that I don't think the bottom should be made of gold. I mean, it could be, but it should be mainly made of another material. I think gold would be just a bit harder to get JUST for a display case, when you could make one with just glass too.

Videos aren't daily anymore, but I'm too lazy to edit the signature. Sorry...
Alright, you had some pretty good answers to all of my questions, I can't find a fault with any of them.
I noticed a suggestion to make signs placed on these half signs.
Why not just replace the keyhole with a golden plaque?
In fact, I have an idea for a GUI with 3 things on it.
A "Display" slot. That would be where you put the item to be displayed.
A "Cloth" Slot. Only cloth can be plaed here, and it would create a little pillow of the corresponding color inside the case that the item would rest on.
and finally a "Plaque" Slot. This would be similar to the GUI to edit a sign when you place it, but would only have two rows. Whatever you wrote on it would be displayed on the plaque I mentioned above, and it could only be edited once.
Note: The cloth slot may be disregarded if you think it would be too complex.
I like this idea. I was thinking that the gold thing looked a little hard to display things on. I also had a thought about signs turning into plaques when put on display cases, but I like this a little better. I added it to the front post as Proposition 3.

As I am posting this my mp3 player just shuffled onto ABBA's song "Money, money, money."
This is ironic because using gold is one of the main points of this. Gold as of now has a use only for prestige, which is sort of weak since Diamond is much more prestigious and useful. So the point of using gold is not only because it is shiny and looks pretty, but also because it fills a need, the need for ol' Au to find use. If you don't have the gold, then you're out of luck, because without gold you can't show people the first block you mined on minecraft ever. The game revolves around the need to GET stuff for cool stuff.

Gold certainly seems the most sensible. All things considered, what else could gold be used for, even outside what it already can be? It's a soft metal that's nearly useless for tools and armor, and even in the modern world it's only real worth is as a sign of wealth and class. If you're going to display your valuables to show off, you might as well kill two birds with one stone and show off your items and your gold.

I'm almost 100% positive that this have been suggested before but i'll suggest it again anyways
That no-brain piggies thing explains a lot.
1-Explains why they are so morrons
2-Explains why they come to us when we kill them
3-Explains where do zombie pigmen come from
4-Doesn't explain why this guy has sig'd me
I like the idea, but saying only gold is a bit retarded.
Wooden plank display cases for wood huts would be useful as well.
Iron display cases would look good in cobble rooms.
Gold doesn't always look good, sometimes it looks down right ugly depending on the room its in.
Gold would probably look best in a Stone room.
So please rethink your 1 metal stance.
P.S The graphic really sold me, i was dead set against the idea till i saw it.
If you're dead-set on making gold require to craft this thing, you could add a "Material" slot to the GUI I mentioned that would give it the appearance of being whatever block you put in it.
The options would only be metals (other than gold), wood, and possibly obsidian though.

What's wrong with it looking like gold? It's supposed to be a fancy display to show off your wealth and items.

I really like the idea. Then we can make "proper" museums. Are you also able to display blocks, like blocks of diamonds or obsidian or something like that?
Grate work on the graphics! (a glass reskin I suppose?)
Kind of. I reskined a halfstep to be gold, then dropped a diamond on it, and then reskined it again so that a double-half step would be part glass, and then MSPaint'd the two screenshots.

Seconded this. Why not have it work in tiers, like tools or armour - wood, stone, iron, diamond, gold. There would only be an aesthetic difference (ie, one would not be better than another), but it'd allow more variety.
Aside from that, this is one of the finest display case threads I've seen. In conjunction with the wall mount thread (which I saw your post on), our minecraft homes would really get an overhaul!
Ok, I don't personally like the idea of tiered display cases. However, I do see your point, and this suggestion thread is supposed to be something like a democracy, Here's a proposition: If you can get good graphics for it, I will add a wood tier, and either a stone or iron tier. Maybe if it looks good, I'll even add a diamond display case, but I make no promises on that.

No. Shapeshifting blocks I draw a line at.

My point, but we'll see how it turns out.

My solution still requires you to have gold to make it, but as many people have pointed out gold doesn't go with every decoration scheme.
edit: wait, I just thought of a solution that doesn't require changing this idea. Texture packs.
I'm sorry but I actually prefer the tiered idea to the shapeshifting GUI. The gui's should remain relatively simple and intuitive. That... isn't.

Yes, it would, since they drop just like any other item. If you want to show off a stack of diamond blocks, or obsidian, or even dirt, go right ahead.
Why craft the larger display? Why not have it work like a chest, where they instead automatically link up. The larger display case will allow for more items, like placing 3 of them in a 1x2 space.

The cons of this have already been presented. If they worked like chests, you wouldn't gain any extra space because you wouldn't be able to put them end to end.

It actually is the same size as the normal display case, but it holds 4 items instead of 1.

But yes, I think one that would be cheap but look like cupboards would be nice.
What do you mean by "one that would be cheap but look like cubboards would be nice?"
Thanks for the disembodied head. I'll put that away with the others. I'm glad that the effort I put into the graphics is working out.
