Besides, how about adding a lightstone dust to the empty spot in the crafting recipe? This way the item would be lit up, and there would be a light source in the display case.

You could replace the middle gold ingot with lightstone dust?
Or, even better, a lightstone block.
Biggest problem here: Shops and displays are pretty pointless if you don't have someone to look at it, so display cases would be used more in multiplayer. Many multiplayer servers do not support multiple worlds, and have no nether. No nether, no glowstone.

I'm almost 100% positive that this have been suggested before but i'll suggest it again anyways
I do like this idea, and you should implement it as a Mod. This may be the best way to actually get your content noticed, and implemented as a standard part of the game. I personally am in favor of the several different bases, but I'm not sure how the wool implement woud work. Agree on the plaque, and I can see why you would only want Gold for the design, but I think that you should notice that the amount of uses for Gold is rising. I beleive Gold is now the fastest mining tool as well? Anyways, I do like your idea, and you should program it as a mod. If ModLoader is needed, definitely use Risagumi's

useful for shops in SMP. Also would add more aesthetics. This is good.
Wow, you actually called a suggestion good rather than flaming the topic! You've learned a lot from what I told you in the Cutscenes topic (to ignore topics you don't like and let them die on their own).

sorry I haven't been actively in here, With the "view your posts" thing down I sort of faded off.
I have very little modding ability: I am newish to Java and programming in general and ModLoaders confuse me. I could read tutorials I guess by I also am low on time.
A torch placed in a display case would make a display case displaying a torch.
Fusing Display cases would just get complicated and I don't see a point in it.

It'd make for a far neater way of displaying more than one item in one case, without cramming them all together in one block. Though personally I'd say two, like a chest, would be a suitable limit.
Unlike chests, where connecting them together is convenient because you only have to open one chest instead of two for your items, connecting the display cases wouldn't really serve a purpose. Instead of two display cases next to each other showing two items, you would have two display cases next to each other showing two items minus the tiny little line that separates the blocks. It doesn't serve a practical purpose, and the visual difference is minimal at best.

It is pretty clear people like the large display case idea and REALLY like the cloth&plaque idea. The breaking-the-case-for-items seems to be a little more vague, so I'll leave not consider that decided.
It would be a pretty negligible visual difference, true. It'd give you the ability to change the contents of both at the same time though. I think you're probably right though, on reflection; it's easy enough to just place them side by side.
As a last note, connecting them might also run into the same problems as chests where you can only put them in groups of two. I'd rather have the option of having long rows of display cases.

Ok, so on the doors: They aren't too high when they don't bob, but they bob over the top. So if we had code that kept them from bobbing, or kept it minimal, then we'd be fine.
Diamond, I'll agree, is more precious than gold. But when was the last time you saw a display case made out of diamond?
Obsidian is not more precious than gold. I have to find gold. I can and have made obsidian in my minecraft basement with 6 iron ingots, some lava, and some water.Either way, I think it would make a weird looking display case.
