I just hope they come in more flavors than just gold and are in some way redstone compliant.
Say, Redstone logic to open the cases?
But I would use inverse logic so you need a charge to keep them closed, that way people can't just set a button next to them and pop them open. Heck and if you have enough gold to make a few cases you probably have a store room of redstone laying around.
*snipped*
Furthermore, if I decide to build some sort of museum, I might wish to use the display case itself to demonstrate the relative value of the item within. That is, I'll put cheap, easy to find items in a wooden or stone case (a bone, maybe?), but I'll reserve my gold/diamond cases for diamonds, glowstone, mossy, whatever.
It's about time someone gave a decent argument for tiered cases aside from "I want it because I don't like gold, waa". I still disagree with making it such an easy thing to get early on, but this is opinion and at least you have the first worthwhile argument.

Subtle lighting would be great. Maybe a little less then a redstone torch. Or maybe the same amount.
Redstone lighting is probably minimum for easy viewing.

With regards to the lighting - if it's less than/same as a redstone torch, mobs will be able to spawn there unless there's additional lighting anyway. Which kind of renders the whole lighting nearly useless. I originally thought the same as you, but now I'm reconsidering. Can you persuade me (as if my opinion counts for anything!)?
As I said, Redstone lighting is minimum however it can still be considered a half block (which means no monsters will spawn on it) and it can give off just enough light to deter monsters spawning.

There could be an item limit depending on the case type? Diamonds can't go in stone, etc.

The whole "as I said" thing makes it sound like they were arguing against something you only just said in the paragraph above. The problem isn't mobs spawning on the display, but just around it. A hostile mob can spawn about 7 or 8 blocks away from a normal torch, and almost right next to a redstone one. This is why I suggested going in between for a small area of safety. Technically speaking, you could just put a torch next to the display and be done with it, but giving it it's own light would get rid of some clutter.

This seems like it would get really awkward really fast. The only way to know if something could go into the display would be to try with every single item just to see if it can go in or not. And then every time an item is added into the game they have to go back and adjust the display case to decide where it can and can't go. There are no other containers that limit the type of item that goes in. You can stick a furnace into a furnace if you want. Doesn't do anything, but it's possible.

I meant that since I wrote something about the redstone lighting to munchers post, so I just said it to imply I was saying the same thing again.
The lighting isn't meant to be a real light, I never said it would be, I was just suggesting it since it would make it easier to see.
Also you dont have to have limitations, but you were questioning it so I commented.
If this case idea were made you could finnaly put your bones together in a museum and pretend you have an ancient native skeleton on the unpopulated land...
Hey travesty, I see you're pretty good with this graphical stuff. Would you mind trying to make graphics for the Cloth + Plaque suggestion?
I'm also thinking that maybe the plaque shouldn't be a natural incorporation of the block, since it would overflow into other blocks. Maybe instead, if you place a sign on the display case it changes into a plaque. Any takers?

Sadly, I must decline. This is better left to anyone competent with making 3d models. I just cheated and pretty much used the same method as you in that each image is just a combination of two, one of which had half-blocks reskinned to glass.

The inventory(Only one item can be in the case, not a stack(?))*
If it could be made to work, stacks should be allowed. It just seems to me like it would be better in most every way, if it can be made to display a number exactly like it would in your inventory.
So instead of everyone having a display case that shows a diamond, you can gloat that yours displays a stack of 64 diamonds while someone else only has 4. This would also allow shops to show how much of each item they have in stock.

About the lightstone idea: It seems like a tradeoff.
We make the design more logical, since obviously you need something that makes light to make light. But we make the design also more complicated and expensive. The expensive I can live with, but is it worth it to lose the mainstream [] design?
But great idea nonetheless.

Gold looks fine.
And if the gold really does bother you that much, learn to texturepack.
