In the latest version of Minecraft, placing two fences directly adjacent to each other, but not diagonally, will cause the fence posts to be connected by two horizontal wooden rails. Placing a fence without any adjacent fences will simply place a fence post with no rails.
Example A:
Grass = Grass
Wood = Fence
Here, only one fence is placed, so only a fence post will be seen.
Example B:
Grass = Grass
Wood = Fence
Here, two fences that do not touch are placed, so two fence posts, not connected, will be seen.
Example C:
Grass = Grass
Wood = Fence
Here, two fences that touch each other diagonally are placed, so two fence posts, not connected, will be seen, as the game treats these fence posts as not touching.
Example D:
Grass = Grass
Wood = Fence
Here, two fences that touch each other are placed, so two fence posts connected by two rails will be seen.
What am I suggesting?:
Change Example C! I am suggesting that fence posts that rest on diagonally adjacent blocks, should be connected by rails, to produce Example E, which would replace Example C as the correct mechanic.
Example E:
Grass = Grass
Wood = Fence
Here, two fences that touch each other diagonally are placed, so two fence posts will be seen, connected by rails.
Conclusion:
That's all! Have I just set the world record for longest and most complex explanation in a suggestions thread for a mechanical change to a concept as simple as fences? Probably. Vote in the poll to leave your opinion, its the easiest way for me to gauge opinions, but feel free to let me know what you think down below in a reply anyway!
POLL NOTE: If you are undecided, or support the suggestion as long as changes are made, do not vote in the poll! Instead, let me know what issues you see, wait for me to respond, and then make your judgement. I have not included a 'Yes, with changes' option as I do not believe that votes can be changed after changes are made.
Hmm, while this is a good idea, it would have to be done for all 6 fence types and maybe cobble walls. It would likely be used creatively, and practically.

Yes, walls could do this too, I completely forgot about those.
As for Broccoli's question, I'm not sure I understand what you're asking. I don't see any reason why straight connection would cancel out diagonal connection in any way. A triangle would be formed because all of the fences would be connected to all adjacent (including diagonal) fences. Unless, of course, I'm missing the point of the question.

I just thought of something. What if you make a square pen out of a fence? Then all the corners would be triangles, and that wouldn't really work.
Half support. I really like the idea, but I think it would work better if somehow, that didn't happen.

Yes I agree, If you want a square corner the connection should default to just the post making the corner square not connect the two on either side of the corner and making a triangle or skipping the corner post.

Agreed. Full corners should receive full priority.

This would be nice for buildings, since you could have side rails.

I don't even play Minecraft much anymore yet here I am on the Minecraft forums for some reason...
I like this idea. I've always wondered why we couldn't do this with fences.
Full support.

Support, but could it work with walls too?
problem: diagonals don't give block updates
