Yeeeeah, as they work now the minecart boosters are completely unintuitive (I needed a tutorial to build my first one) and obviously buggy. Put me down for preferring sections of 'booster track'. You may have to redesign your station a bit, but it'll save space and resources in the end and be waaaay more intuitive.
That being said, yes to magnets. Though in keeping with the medieval theme I'd call them 'lodestones'.
Redstone in a 4x4 pattern makes a magnet block.
Redstone is used in compasses, so it must be magnetic to some degree.
Also, the "north" end will always face the player when placing it, to prevent aiming issues.
but it still doesn't make sense even if one minecart was magnetic. Still doesn't explain how they accelerate each other. Magnets don't make perpetual motion machines.

Explain redstone.

****ing magnets, how do they work?
EXACTLY!
They don't even need to make perfect sense!
They could be this awe inspiring magic material that does cool stuff for us! :biggrin.gif:

It's a bug, plain and simple. From the code it looks like Notch tried to make minecarts 'linkable' by giving them equal acceleration when they're close... It didn't quite go as expected.

Yeah but seriously you're not helping to explain it with having a magnet in one, which seems like what you are trying to do. Magnets on the track would work as long as you reverse the polarity as the minecraft goes across, just like a roller coaster in the real world.

Just out of curiosity, what made you think I didn't know that?

I didn't assume you didn't know that. I was just complimenting your point by stating the obvious in a sarcastic tone.
You're right, it doesn't make sense to keep boosters as they are whether through an explanation of kludged real world magnet physics or pixie magic. It's a bug - an obvious bug.
Even though, Minecraft is one of the most real games ever when you think about it.
I lol'd
OT: People, he's not suggesting magnets so that they can be used for their actual use in the real world. I'm pretty sure he's using it as an excuse so that the current Minecraft boosters can stay, Which i think is a fantabulous ****ing idea. They're orignal just like the Creeper, odd things like boosters are what define Minecraft..

Or at least thats now i interpret it.
Precisely, except that magnets for other purposes would also be awesome.

I'm sorry but I want to be able to have opposing tracks directly next to each other someday. And I'd like minecart linking to someday be fixed. And I'd like a more intuitive method for boosting carts, from a strictly good game design-centric point of view.

What makes you think you wouldn't be able to?
Only the magnetic booster would cause cart to cart momentum.
If you don't build a magnetic booster, you don't have a problem.

Don't let pointless nostalgia stifle innovation.
The way I see it, this would add a hell of a lot more for us to innovate with.
Magnetic booster carts, plus acceleration blocks, plus whatever else might be cooked up.
More tools for players to tinker with.

Done and done :smile.gif:
Vote here to implement ****ing MAGNETS!
Flip switch.
Vote!
you hold W to go forward and S to go back and A = go slower and D = go faster or just hold W more makes you go faster
its simple and i like that but i guess acceleration block idea is ok too :biggrin.gif:
Notch has already mentioned the potential for trains. This is likely how they will work.
Explain redstone.
