I'd rather have some furniture before any additions to the minecart system. Certainly magnets would be a kill to implement and really it would still look "odd". I'd rather have a track that gives your cart a boost than have to waste space, tracks, and another minecraft for a booster, let alone a magnet cart.
Sorry, but I never think this will happen.

my god i love you. that is wat im talking about!! but these twitter trolls wont stop!
After reading this thread I have finally come to realize.
Nobody has any clue how magnets work.
I felt sad by the time I reached this point. It was borderline painful.
I need every single poster in this thread to admit to trolling or sarcasm in order to recover.

****ing magnets, how do they work?
EXACTLY!
They don't even need to make perfect sense!
They could be this awe inspiring magic material that does cool stuff for us! :biggrin.gif:
Does anyone know if they had magnets in medieval times, which i suppose this game is based in/on/around?
I mean, aside from redstone circuits and maybe other glaring omissions, would magnets fit with the theme notch is aiming for?

Sceptic's Mom: Hey come on down your supper's ready.
Sceptic: Pics or it didn't happen.
I hear a lot of praise for this idea, but only three ideas on how to use with magnets in minecraft (forgive me if I've missed one):
- Accelerating/decelerating minecarts
- A rail gun
- changing the direction that the compass points
When I wrack my brain trying to think of what I would do with a magnet block in minecraft (because I too am keenly interested in this idea), i come up blank. This is because we currently have very little in the way of mechanical items like axles, gears, mechanical levers, etc. Perhaps my field of vision is too narrow. Maybe someone could speculate on what other uses a magnet block could have?
o.o With magnets I could make an elevator! Make some sort of shaft thing with magnets at the top and bottom with a block thing inside and iron at the top and bottom of it, and and some type of redstone contraption to turn the top magnets on and the bottom ones off and vice versa all electromagnet like!

I brought the idea up as a specific solution to the minecart booster glitch issue. There are tons of other possibilities for magnets, though they would be based on their specific game physics, and much of it would come from a ton of player trial and error. You don't have to think for very long to see the possibilities, walls that open, shut, moving physical foundations, etc. Whatever players might cook up. However, this thread is specifically in reference to the minecart glitch. Notice how the only comment of other possibilities comes in the last sentence or so.
Magnets pulling minecarts in certain directions over switches in certain timings.... I believe Redstone Sorcery + Magnets could be the start of Moving Parts to making minecraft machines :}

Its called magnetite, it's naturally occurring, and has been known of for at least 2500 years. Its been mentioned in the suggestions, but this is speculation.
In response to the above: Magnets could make iron blocks within a certain distance "drop" in the direction of the magnet if there's nothing in the way, or in the opposite direction if the polarity is reversed with redstone.
The result: You can finally connect the limited uses of redstone to ingame physics, WITHOUT using glitches or the danger of TNT.
I'd love this. Powered minecarts are useless, and boosters aren't as powerful now.
Also, when i saw "Magnet", i thought Left 4 Dead 2, because i call the Magnum the Magnet. It attracts and repels zombies.
Anyways, This would make utter sense. which is scary, considering this game has kamikaze bushes, skeletons that fire projectiles, zombies, ghosts, and mass TNT potential.
Doctor, you're right! But wait! We have to tell the notch of the future who won't do it to do it!
What does that mean?
We have to go...
Back, to the future!
Again.
Damn.

There are 10 kinds of people who understand binary.
Those who do.
And those that don't.
Surprised no one suggested this be in the Suggestions forum, usually people like to ***** about it, but I guess if the idea is awesome enough, they let it slide.
Anyways, I'd be fine with this. I know someone suggested magnets before, and their idea of its use was to change the direction the compass pointed, so you can place a magnet in your base, and you could now use the compass to get back home.
This. But I'm thinking that magnet blocks would attract ur compass if u get close enough. More magnets placed next to each other = larger radius of affect. so you could essentially make waypoints. Now thad be legit :smile.gif:
I think that it might be a nice feature, and make minecarts and minecart stations more user friendly and take up less space. and I would be really easy to recyle a big minecart stations into the new mincart format.
