To keep this ontopic i think the north magnet should ne made from redstone and the south magnet from that new rock ( i forget the name )
I don't think you get how magnets work. There can be no "just north," or "just south." Magnets can only be magnets if they have both.
Small magnets want to become bigger magnets, so with the more you have, the stronger it gets due to more of the domains lining up, and the field getting bigger and stonger.
Gratz, you passed 9th grade.
Minecraft isn't real life.

then please explain to me how minecraft has to be real? show me a real life zombie please? or maby a creeper?
in minecraft magnets can be a pig with lava for eye's if notch wants it to be that.

Creeper pig, Creeper pig.
Does whatever a Creeper pig does.
Can he swing from a web?
No he can't,
There not implemented yet...

Dude, just saying. It doesn't even matter if it's north or south. It will still attract iron either way.
I'm just saying that that's how magnets work, and we don't need another damn rock to have to travle another million miles to find on our old worlds.
I never even said it was supposed to be 'real'. Even though, Minecraft is one of the most real games ever when you think about it.

It's hard waiting around for something that you know might never happen; but it's even harder to give up when you know it's everything you ever wanted.

Minecraft isn't real life.
Actually the 8th.
I learned it in the 8th.
But still, I wasn't saying it had to be real. I'm just saying that we don't need another ****ing rock to get the other pole. It's better real.

Well, Iron is feromagnetic, and can be turned into a magnet. But, how would we craft such magnet? My geuss is, is this:
(Redstone)
This would be a magnet ( )
I say the rail should look like this:
[] []
This would be a 'magnetic rail'. It would give you the same ammount of rails, but magnetic. Another special something it would have, would be that redstone would be able to switch the poles.
I like all of this. I'm not sure how magnets are made, exactly, but redonste + anything = makes sense in MineCraft.

I'm not sure if it deserved the Back to the Future quote, but it's a good idea nonetheless. Belongs in the suggestions section, though.
Perhaps we could have copper ore that could be turned into copper ingots, which could then be converted to copper wire, which could be wound around an iron ingot to create an electromagnet. (which would mean magnets could only work when attached to redstone.)
If you wanna get REALLY technical, copper wire would be created using an extrusion machine (also craftable) and would require a coating be applied before being wound into a magnet. And then you could use magnets to create coilguns that fire iron blocks.
Ok I'm going overboard. Still, science ftw!
Lol, a magnetic turret.
Can any moderator move this to the Suggestions forum? I'd like Notch to see this.
Magnets. Such a great Idea I can only drop the in my hand where I stand.
But I do think we need fully working magnets. North + South. Think of the possibilities

Surprised no one suggested this be in the Suggestions forum, usually people like to ***** about it, but I guess if the idea is awesome enough, they let it slide.
Anyways, I'd be fine with this. I know someone suggested magnets before, and their idea of its use was to change the direction the compass pointed, so you can place a magnet in your base, and you could now use the compass to get back home.

So you wake up on a beach one day, and remember NOTHING. (Except your degree teachings in Engineering, Wilderness Survival, Metal work, Physics, Tech, Psychology, History, Dynamics, and Blocks.) You mine and build and survive for years and years.
