After seeing this thread, I decided to try my own take on the general idea.
Glowslime would be an item crafted from 4 Glowstone and 1 Slimeball in this pattern:
It would be used as a placeable light source. Placed Glowslime would have a hitbox 1/16 of a block thick. It could be placed on floors, walls, and ceilings, with a light level of 15. Placed Glowslime would have no texture, but would instead emit particles. The particles would be 1-pixel, small yellow specks that would remain stationary until despawning, rather like Mycelium spores. In the inventory, Glowslime would look like a yellow Slimeball with specks in it.
Idea by Marabillis: Glowslime could be throwable like a Snowball. If it hits a block, thrown Glowslime places itself on that block. If it hits an entity, it has the same effect as a Spectral Arrow, making a glowing outline appear on it, but doing no damage.
Another crafting recipe with a texture (Thanks, Marabillis!):
Another texture by myself:
Glowslime also has a dimmer, more ambient counterpart: Redstone Cream. It would be crafted like this:
It would emit a light level of 7, like a Redstone Torch. Redstone Cream would behave similarly to Glowslime, but would emit red particles instead of yellow ones. It would look like a red-tinted Magma Cream with red specks. Redstone Cream would not be throwable, but would cause the block it's placed on to emit a redstone signal. The signal would increase by 3 for each Cream put on the block, with a maximum signal strength of 15.
Glowslime/Redstone Cream will not have a collision box, allowing you to walk through it.
With 1.9, spectral arrows make a glowing outline on entities upon impact. I thought it might be cool (and logical) if Glowslime could be thrown and would have the same effect on entites?
Also, Support.
That's actually a good idea! Adding to the thread.
I was playing around with some textures earlier, and i came up with one i really like. It is the slimeball texture, slightly tinted yellow-ish. The specks of glowstone have also been made greener, but are otherwise placed as they are in the glowstone texture.
Sorry, but I don't really see this fitting in in survival minecraft, it just feels off. And as for the problem of hidden light sources, there is in fact a solution. You can re-texture glowstone, redstone lamps, or sea lanterns as regular blocks, and then in your build they will emit light secretly. And it's actually much easier than it sounds, there are plenty of great programs out there that let you easily create texture packs, and you only have to copy over the textures from already made blocks
I understand it's an inconvenient solution (and btw there are several light source blocks that you can re texture). But I'm going more towards helping map makers, since I don't really think survival needs this. After all, that's part of the point. When you're trying to survive, you need to use torches to light your way (or glow stone or redstone lamps yeah)

I understand completely, and I agree trust me. But in survival its up to us to find inventive solutions to problems like this. Because that way they're real world (virtual world yeah) problems. That's what I think of when I think if survival. It's up to us to find the solution, that's the realism. Just my opinion

SOmetimes an "inventive solution" is really an inconvenient and rather sloppy solution. I made this suggestion with multiplayer builders in mind, so a resource pack is not necessary to enjoy the creation. Plus it has a survival use, it can be thrown and placed from a distance.

Tell me what you think!
Good idea I give you

I really like this idea. Maybe you could throw the glowslime, because slimeballs? And it would make a slimey sound.

anyway luv u <3
Glowslime is a placeable block. It is permanent.
Edit: Glowslime is now throwable, enjoy!
That is still a really long signature.
The idea sounds ingenius and I don't say that much. It would provide the capability to make any block a light source
with minimal coding. Very well done!

Well, do you have any ideas for a better name?

Very nice! Added to the thread.
I really like this idea! I've had the problem where I want to have a light source, but keep it hidden. I fully support this.
Hello. I am a noob. Help please? Thanks.
how about...
glowballs (yes I realize it's the almost same and that you can't change the title but in my opinion it souunds better).

o.k. I was serious but that's a dumb name. I can't think of anything else though so I guess I was not being very helpful.
