Here's a better idea to incorporate this smoke rocket without adding an extra, unnecessary item:
When making a fire charge, the special ingredient could be coal or charcoal. This would make the firework leave a thick smoke trail, but not explode. The dye would determine the color of smoke (ink sacs or gray dye is recommended).
1- you removed all the fun in this, the smoke is supposed to be colorful and has various effects.
I quite like this suggestion, I've always wanted for there to be more expansion upon pyrotechnics. I don't know if this was mentioned before, but this could also be quite useful for PvP for reasons other than signals, such as launching some sort of smokescreen, with the ability to shoot at an angle and whatnot.
Sorry I was confused when typing it, but an other to implement flares and smoke bombs at the same time is to do this: if if smoke stars where throwable like snow balls you can use them as smoke bombs that explode apon impact (it still uses the effects you suggest but instead of going up is stays as a large smoke cloud), to make the smoke star to a lauchable flare you have to craft it to a rocket, as you do with the current fire stars. To make this fit I also suggest throwable firestars, this would fit with throwable smoke stars. When you throw a fire star the the same effects accure half as high and it will take longer to shoot Since the star can fall, and you have to look up in the sky, rather than than at any block any block in the ground. With this suggestion format you added multiple aspects to fireworks rather than just flares.
Smoke bombs / throwable smokestars
Flares / rocket smokestars
Fire crackers / throwable firestars
Normal Fireworks/rocket firestars
Of course you can make a flare firework by adding the smoke star and a fire star.
Flares and smoke bombs should be silent or almost silent (ninja communication should be heard. And so should a ninja escape.)

yes i understood it since the beginning, but whats the difference between the smoke bomb and the fire cracker?
The smoke bombs create smoke and explode apon impact, the fire cracker is a throwable firework that explodes in a timer , Its a firework Meaning besides the small amouts of damage Its purely for "coolness"
1- you removed all the fun in this, the smoke is supposed to be colorful and has various effects.
2- whats the problem in adding another item?
1. If you add multiple firework stars, such as a red smoke effect and a blue smoke effect, and maybe throw in a large yellow ball star, you can combine effects. In this case, the smoke would be red and blue as it rises, then explode into a large ball of yellow.
2. It's not necessary for Notch to have to code this new item ID in if they can add some data tags to an existing item.

Hmm. It's an interesting idea, being able to throw firework stars (and either the completely new item or the firework star with the smoke effect) but I still think completely new items aren't required, just new data tags to the pre-existing items.
Probably should have said this before, but Partial Support.

well, instead of adding many fire work stars add only one with the new effect, also the colors is not the only effect, there are other modifiers unique only to smoke rockets.
also notch left the project a long time even before microsoft purchased the game from him.
anyway do you know anything about coding? because adding a new item is the easiest part, it could be done within minutes, since they will work on the idea and add smoke trails and that stuff, its not gonna take longer time.
Sounds useful, but why can't the crafting be a bit easier?
Just add a piece of coal to the firework star, or a couple lumps of coal to the firework star. Like how you can add a gold nugget or a diamond to firework already.
This would use the same system already used, and would be a lot easier.

No...The smoke should be an individual effect, and it should not have any other sub-effects.
As for the item, it would be smarter for Jeb, Dinnerbone, or whoever is the one working on this now, to save the item slots for other items that should be completely independent. That way, two new item IDs could be kept free--because to be honest, nothing will be able to convince me to have a separate firework rocket item and smoke rocket item as well as a separate firework star item and smoke star item. It makes no sense.

havent added any new items exept "smoke stars" which were in this suggestion
smoke stars can be made into a rocket like firestars (firework stars) can.
create the flare for the rocket, or can be thrown to explode into a large 4x4x4 smoke mist.(same particles the rocket leaves)
I think ive made this very clear, its the same idea as this thread, but adds throwable smoke stars and firework stars
it also dosent change the crafting recipe of the smoke rocket/ flare.
Firework star used like a firecracker(in-game)
Firework rocket (in-game)
------------------------------------------------
Smoke star used like a smokebomb(suggested)
Smoke rocket used as a flare(its an in-game rocket but instead of a firework star it has a smokestar)
can be combined with firework-star like a Firework rocket can be combined with another firework star and viseversa
I hope i have it cleared up but just in case ive made some pictures in the attachment section.
I havent added any new items exept "smoke stars" which were in this suggestion
I guess so. Still, it seems to make more sense to have the smoke effect as just an add-on to the existing firework star. (I can't believe how many times I've repeated this.)

its just your opinion

the smoke rocket is not an independent item, however the smoke star is. smoke stars and firework stars can be put into the same rocket.

we understood it the first time you said it you didn't need to repeat it, we just don't agree with you.
ok so your idea is to make the smoke star and the firework star the same item, I had this same idea at first (cause im all for no new pointless items)but i couldent think of a system that still allows special effects to be added to the smoke, or allows "smoke bombs", and "fire crackers" to be separate usable items. Just to point out a few of the gaps. So my final conclusion was that adding one new item would be more beneficial than cramming both "spark" and "flare" into the same item.
But i defenetly understand that fustration, so when writing my idea i tried to give to give the current items (firework star and smoke star) a use to make up for this.

no no, smoke stars and fire stars are 2 different items, but the rocket is the same item, since it could contain multiple fire work stars, why not make it able to contain smoke stars as well?

Because the smoke star doesn't have to be a completely separate item.
Obviously, I can't convince you to change things my way; and obviously, you can't convince me to keep things the way it is, so I'll back out from this post.. I won't be giving any new or helpful information by staying on this thread anyway.

The fire cracker is the throwable versión of the firework (colorful spark explosion)
The smoke bombs is the throwable versión of the flare but instead does a large cloud of particles.

so they are the same but each one makes different particles, and have got different sizes?
well i like the smoke bomb but i find the fire cracker senseless
