Sponges have been around since the beginning, and though they have gone through many stages, they have always returned eventually. However, we have never had a counterpart to the Sponge for soaking up other liquids. Enter the Soul Sponge.
This new utility block is very simple - when it is placed down, all fire and lava blocks nearby will be sucked into the sponge, giving a lava dripping effect. This produces a Burning Soul Sponge, which cannot absorb any more liquid and deals damage like a cactus when touched. However, you can throw it in water to make it usable again. You can also right-click a cauldron with it to get your Soul Sponge back along with a block of obsidian. It is almost identical to the Sponge.
To craft the Soul Sponge, you need Soul Sand and a Sponge.
The Soul Sponge can be used for a variety of purposes, from making Nether Travel easier, to saving a burning house, and much more.
I wish all suggestions were this good. Great job. This is a really cool idea! I agree with AThingWithAThing, you shouldn't cook something to remove fire. I don't know if it should be called "burned", though. Maybe "filled" or "used"?
Anyways, great suggestion. Very specific and easy to read, great job!

Quote from Azulywolf:
Dear Justin Bieber haters,
I owe my life to Justin.
On March 9th, 2013, I was in a coma for 6 months after a terrible car crash.
One day my nurse turned the radio to Justin’s song.
So I got up, and turned the radio off
"When life gives you lemons, don't make lemonade! Demand to see life's manager! Make life rue the day it thought it could give Cave Johnson lemons! Do you know who I am? I'm the man whose gonna burn your house down - with the lemons! I'm gonna get my engineers to invent a combustible lemon that'll burn your house down!"
Being a nerd is nothing to be ashamed of. Nerds rule the world! Who invented the internet? Nerds. Who created personal computers and smart phones? Nerds. Who made every video game you've ever played and ever will? Still nerds. Who sent probes to distant planets? Nerds, nerds and more nerds! I'm a nerd and I'm proud.
I would just hide a bunch of these under/in my house. BEWARE GRIEFERS!
Also, what if there was a way to take out the lava in the sponge? You could right click a cauldron and it would drain the lava out, and you could take it out with a bucket. (one use)
That needs to be possible with the regular sponge too... :3

How does one soak up something that isn't a liquid.
I dunno, it's magical or something. Fire is a large part of its usefulness though, so I think it should stay that way.

Support! An original, well balanced idea! However, I have a question: How do you remove the lava from the sponge after using it? Like removing water?
I explain that in the OP, you simply throw it into water and presto, you have your usable Soul Sponge back.

No, I meant retrieving the lava, like you do with normal sponges, after sucking the water you can get it back using a bucket.
Someone should make this a mod...
