Hey guys, im not going to be able to reply to all of your posts tonight... Work was long today and im really tired. Also one of my cats died this morning..
I've read all your posts though, so i'll get back to this after some sleep *nods*
sorry >.<
Grate panels, trapdoors and also grate blocks would be nice.
this thread is nothing about trapdoors... :sleep.gif:
back on topic: yeah, iron and ceramic need differences, but i think the mecanics should be left the same. have only iron is still what i'm in favor of.
so if we have ceramic grates and iron grates, with only the iron grates closeable, that would be 3 new block id's. I do not believe that is bad at all. (i've seen suggestions that would require upwords of 20 to 30 new unique id's...)
on of the good things about this, is another use for clay. not everyone likes bricks (i've only placed 8 excluding pixel art the entire time i've been playing minecraft)
(ninja'd) EDIT: @Nihilias: oh no! get some sleep. dont worry, the internet can take care of itself for a night (tomorrow its on fire)
Wood Grates (weakest... flammable)
-Only lets water and items through... Burns on contact with lava... so I GUESS that could be considered going through also... DOES NOT HAVE AN OFF STATE
Iron Grids
-Lets all fluids through. Tougher than wood. Automatically on the 'On' state, allowing fluids and items through. Can be turned off with power.
Ceramic Grates
-Lets water through, Catches items..? Off and On like Iron Grates
Other types of grates - Gold..? Cobble..?
Grate+
Grate + Chest = Grate that catches and stores items, but lets water pass
Don't over complicate this idea. Though the auto-storing chest is tempting, I think it might be a bit too much. Iron and ceramic gates should be enough. Besides, this isn't supposed to be something easily accessible.
I think there may be a troll hanging around by the sight at one 'no' vote against 37 'yes' votes.
PS: trapdoors, no matter how many times I've been ninja'd, don't belong in this thread. Find a recent thread on it and post there (or go vote on the other suggestion sites supported by Mojang).
I would have to say out of all honesty, I love the idea and would love to see it implemented.
But I would never have a practical use for it (Though there would be many places to use it as decorations, I imagine).
I really don't see why I would ever want to use it in minecraft's current state. You could make floor/wall grates in Dwarf Fortress, with the particular use that it keeps aquatic creatures out of your water source. They are especially important if obtaining water through caverns, which can have amphibian creatures and even flying ones able to swim.
But minecraft doesn't have any of that.
I could only really seeing myself use this in a mob trap, to collect their drops safely. But even then a 1x1x1 open square does a fine job.
Turning gravel/sand into items is semi-useful, and I'll admit it's a good idea. But again I don't think it's practical. You might have an entire desert, but this grate would only be useful for a single pillar of sand, and placing it under all of that sand would also be tricky. If you're going to mine out a block and through the grate there, why not just use a torch anyway?
Maybe if there was a way to automate the sand/gravel collection, but they can only fall straight down...
I think there may be a troll hanging around by the sight at one 'no' vote against 37 'yes' votes.

the sand isnt the purpose of the grate, its just merely an addition (just like the torch's purpose is not sand / gravel harvesting either)
as for any "practical" use, what about sandstone? wool?
this is more useful than those in that it would allow for some cool water features
but mostly, it will be a cool looking block to add to the design and aesthetics of the game.
at least, this is all my view :biggrin.gif:

yes, for an idea to really take hold and have a chance of being implemented, i believe it should be simple
hey just a question.... But if it act as a Grate... wouldnt that mean that the water spread and wash away the redstone like so
dunno if this has been answered or w/e

I really like this idea! The only thing I can think of that comes close to it is the runecrating SMP mod that lets you make horizontal openings you can open and close, and that isn't really practical or useful. I read a post above in which somebody suggested many different types of grates, and people saying it was too complicated. Well, what if ceramic grates and iron grates work the same, except that ceramic grates can't be opened or closed and are burned up by lava. That would be an easy way to add variance without over-complication.

*snip*
that is a good point. I have some ideas, but none of them are applicable in all situations...
Also, i was doing a bit of experimenting; it appears mobs and items use the same [entity] collision detection (tested with fences).
It shouldnt be hard for Notch & co to add a line that allows the items to pass through, but just thought i'd point it out

All you would have to do is dig a tranch and put the gred stone at a higher level than the grate like so: = Open Grate = Closed Grate = Redstone

Cosmetic blocks are great if they are unique. A grate seems like it should have a purpose, though. Wool can be dyed now, so it's actually a great cosmetic material. Sandstone is a great building material. A grate can... be put on the side of a road... I don't make roads, I make walkways. They wouldn't look right with a grate.
Sorry, I can't think of a good reason why this should be added, other than as a cosmetic block. Even then, it's not particularly useful.

you seem to be contradictiting yourself a bit here (well, more than a bit...);
hey, dont worry, there are plenty of people who, like you, lack imagination.
... really "be put on the side of a road"? please tell me you are joking
uuunnnnnnng. i feel like i'm mean, i hate being mean. sorry if i am but its like 3:30 am here...
Other uses:
Making a fish tank. 7 spaces of empty space surrounded by glass with an iron grate ceiling with source blocks on it.
ON" the blocks and water flows, since there is water more than 3 deep w/e, you get your aquarium of squids!
OFF' the block if you want calamarie for dinner :biggrin.gif: or w/e ink and giggles n' stuff.
Repeater circuits, makes water fall in unique designs and patterns! (i really gotta go learn how to deal with redstone circuitry. >.<)
also, someone said that redstone would get washed away, this may happen with horizontal flows, but typically, there will be a space you can usethat wont impede flow,
ex.
Horizontal flowing - place up/down
vertical flowing - place to the sides
If your wanting every direction "(just to argue with me?)", then why would you have a block there?
these blocks are not so restricted, just thinking for a few short minutes I thought up a few things that (haven't been mentioned? if it has, credit to you as well :smile.gif: )
so I'm sure fixes* to problems we see can either be smoothed out by ideas from the nice people here. OR applied differently to fix the same problem with the mechanics already suggested.
PS: I don't know if there is a troll here or not, but this has got to be the cleanest/nicest thread I've posted.

Awesome idea. Whats the advantage to using a full grate though? It would be easier and use less resources to just make a half grate. Maybe only full grates could be redstone activated.

So true. there's like 3 topics open right now.
