lol guess my random idea bout weather has no place here :/
but lets see....
Yeah, I think that's too cheap for it. D: (wai?)
I think the 2 iron ingots should give 2 half grates, and 4 half grates gives 1 full block grate. OR at most 6 half grates giving 2 full block grates.
the first - 1 full block grate would then be the equivalent of 4 iron ingots
the second - 1 full block grate's cost would then be the equivalent of 3 iron ingots.
though I think the second would be very lenient, as a full block grate would cost as much as a bucket...
It would allow for players to make it easier.
but 1 ingot per block? that seems excessivly cheap. IMO. I'm sure not everyone thinks this ^^
Iron is used in a lot of things, it is also very abundant when mining, 3rd to coal and stone >.>
most of them take more than 1 and are quite small at that... well... I just think that 1:1 is a bit much :tongue.gif:
no no no, dont get the wrong idea. I didn't ignore your weather idea, i had some work i had to go do, so i was short on time but wanted to get another post up before i had to leave. D:
I like the weather idea, but im sure Notch and his team have already thought about it considering they've been working a lot on the environment in MC. Not so sure how i'd like sandstorms... last thing id like is for my stuff to get covered in sand and have to go and clean it all up. Do a search for a weather thread and see if someone already suggested your idea, if not make a thread so we can talk about it more there. ^^ Id love if there were random thunderstorms, now that would kick so much ass!
Getting back on topic
I guess i am a bit biased towards these grates being easy to make, and not thinking about putting actual 'work' into the game. what about a 2:1 (iron ingot to full block grate) ratio?
where its 2 iron ingots to make 2 half grates, and 2 half grates to make 1 Full Block? lmao or am i still being a cheap'o? xD
actually, im not so concerned about costs.. that will ultimately be up to Notch n' Team if they do want to use this idea anyway lol. But as to put up something in the OP that makes things a little clearer, i'll edit in the 2:1 ratio as an example *nods*
Thanks Xuro for your valuable insight, id probably over 'easy' this whole idea if it wasn't for someone else's opinion.
I will certainly try that.
but I' am not calling YOU cheap, no no! don't get me wrong!
perhaps it's a little of something like ocd?
If 2 iron ingots makes a 2 half grate, and 2 half grates make a full grate, then 2 iron ingots make a full grate, so why cant you just build it with the 2 iron ingots?
maybe I feel it's too many steps, (on top of it being too lenient :tongue.gif: ) like, why cant we make a half chest with 4 planks of wood? or in this analogy, why cant i choose to make 2 half chests with 8 wood, instead of a full box?
same cost for 2 different things...
ugh my head is going round in circles, it just seems off. (on top of being too cheap (insert evil face here*) )

Perhaps they could have an open/closed function when used with Redstone?
What would be the point in that? They can already let water and stuff go through. Which reminds me, a floodgate would be a good addition to Minecraft, like that mod!

For one, it would give the player more tools to use when constructing elaborate things with redstone, it could enable lava or water to be toggled remotely and would provide many lulz.

I believe Notch already wanted to implement Flood Gates. I imagine them being more like doors, and not blocks like how i want the Grates. The main focus and purpose of Grates is to be able to stand on them, and liquids and items going through them. I think trying to make a redstone function on them might be a bit to much. Want to keep these simple ^^

Wouldn't it be more efficient to have just one block capable of doing both rather than have a grate block AND a block that has an on/off function for water?

That would be... actually a good idea. Although it would require Notch n' Team to notice, consider, and use this idea along with implementing flood gates. Saying they do, then yes... rather then having two things doing very similar things, one doing both would make more sense. *nods* ...hmm, i'll make note of this in the OP. Thanks RouvenT ^^

No, you still don't understand. Drainage grates would let water and lava through even if it were there. It just wouldn't let players, mobs, items, etc. through.

If he doesn't understand, I don't understand, since I understand, and don't know how you misunderstood him.
We know that a drainage grate /block would let water/lava/items through *(according to Nih's idea) and he wants Redstone to be able to toggle the block (on)(-lets water/lava/items through) and (off)(does NOT let water/lava/items through)
so, how he doesn't understand that grates let it through if Redstone could turn it off doesn't seem to make sense, how can something turn something (off) if it can't be (on) to begin with?
This would allow for even more elaborate traps, and devices, (corridor with lever that says "Vault Door", that actually drops lava on them, and locks either side seems rather devious :biggrin.gif:)
Comprende?
or Have I misunderstood what he misunderstood that only you seemed to have understood his misunderstanding? @_O

All right, this is what i interpret this idea to be;
A toggle that switches the grate from open, to closed, when powered with red stone. Here is a diagram:
:Indigo:=Water
:Red:=Powered Redstone Un-Powered Redstone
:stair:=Closed Mode
:_:=Open Mode
[]=Anything Else Above Water and Grate Level(Ground, stone, etc.)
:Glass:=Anything Else at, or Below Water and Grate Level
Very nice. I would like to see some more blocks implemented into the game that would allow the ability to make a realistic city. i would spend hours building a huge city, then put survival on hard and act like i'm playing in a zombocalypse type game.
I will certainly try that.
