I would think maybe a charged wire would be used to block the current, not open it. Also, you could make some kind of second model for it, where it seals up the holes or something...

may i recommend making a gate that allows only liquids and not items/mobs. so a small gate and a large gate...

lets see it Notch! This idea is a GRATE one.

Steel! You can use stainless steel to make fridges/freezers or the Grates. And you can use steel for weapons/tools, and maybe a bathtub... For every 5 seconds you sit in it, it gives you .5 hearts :biggrin.gif:

I recently started trying (That's the key word!) to play Dwarf Fortress, and seeing connections from there to Minecraft - grates would be an excellent addition. Some other things from DF would also be cool in MC, such as the floor hatches. Any implementation of this idea would be awesome!

I want to fill my dungeon floors with this and throw in some water under it so I can make my awesome loot gatherer thingy. This is a GRATE idea and I want to see it NAO!!!

This was one of the first things I ever suggested on the forums, back when no one could cry "already suggested" over and over. So naturally, I still think it's a good idea. If the piston mod gets implemented, though, a similar effect could be achieved with a little creativity.

Very cool. Very useful too. This would be a good addition if implemented alongside something like a sluice gate. I foresee a whole new generation of mob traps being designed and perfected just due to something like this suggestion.

I LOVE this idea I had actually thought of the same sort of thing myself but hadn't bothered posting yet.

I was just wondering seeing as it might take Notch and the Mojang team awhile to get round to this suggestion maybe someone can make this into a mod?

Sorry if this seems to hard or I sound like an idiot ( ) I am not a modder myself and so I understand little of the difficulties.

I would love Notch to implement this into the game. Not only could it just build bridges or have boat uses you could also make traps with the on/off feature using lava. I have always wanted something like this to be implemented in this game. A for you good sir!

I'm loving this idea. sandstone or smooth stone could work too
