Great concept. I think that these should basically be doors for water and lava only (with the sand and gravel filter system you thought of). Both gates should start in the ON state when placed, and be able to be changed with a redstone current. But as a difference, ceramic drainage gates should be also able to be changed my being clicked on, just like wooden doors. Also, I think that the half gates should be able to be on either the top OR bottom half of the block. Maybe a difference in crafting, something like this:
Top half:

Bottom half:

The sticks could represent the imaginary doors that control the flow of liquids (ON/OFF), and would be the deciding factor of whether it's a top or bottom half gate. Then the full gate would be a top half plus a bottom half, or maybe something like this:

Are you, are you; Coming to the tree; Wear a necklace of rope; Side by side with me; Strange things did happen here; No stranger would it be; If we met up at midnight; In the hanging tree
I was looking at stuff you posted, and I finally remembered my other idea.
(off topic of grates, but you said something about sharing ideas didn't you?)

= fish bowl (water is bucket)
Fish Bowl (under) fish = fish bowl with fish :biggrin.gif:
Fish Bowl x 5 (shaped like a helmet) = scuba helmet!
was thinking of tubes and ropes, but I'm pretty tired and hungry and have stopped remembering all the details I had come up with at that time :sleep.gif:
I hate waiting 24 hours between meals :sad.gif:
yeah, again off topic but i always thought of things like this too as in instead of having just armour you could have say []
[] [] [] = flash helmet, help you see in the dark/underwater
or some waterfproof materials in the shape of boots to make flippers that make you swim faster
I'd bet new stuff like this would help a lot

If you want me to see a message or reply to it, quote me, don't just add a new reply in a "slow thread" hoping I will. Thanks
What you could add is if it is in a roof of anywhere facing down and water is on top, how about drips of water coming out of the bottom, you could use the rain thing to come out of the bottom, that'd be awesome, i need something like that for my rapture world :smile.gif:
Good luck
I mostly just want this so I can have a thing I can walk on, but that rain can fall on
<== rain <== grate <=== rain
Easy. With my implementation, the block has those transparent holes which might count as transparency. Add that to the rain and weather through transparent blocks glitch (Notch might fix it) and you have your self a sneaky code-less part done
Edit: NOtch fixed on 1.5_01 Guess I didn't notice :sad.gif: I somehow need to get my hands on 1.5 :/
Great idea! There should only be one type of block though, a full sized one that can be toggles on and off, made of iron, but it should probably be made something like this though
being redstone dust
It shouldn't be just 8 iron ingots in a square because that recipe could be used to make metal chests or something, another recipe could be []
Either way, it's definitely an idea notch should seriously consider, as there are tonnes of opportunities and possibilities it presents, such as mobtraps, crop harvesting systems, transporting items ect. Though maybe they should consider to make it with an item that is more valuable, as it is a really useful object and redstone and iron are really easy to find
-Items pass through
-Rain and snow pass through
And it would be good aesthetically, too.

Argh! You did that on purpose, didn't you?
creeper gonna creep!!

but gold is almost useless :C
until 1.5 with powered rails although they don't really do the trick either...
thanks!
Good luck

Interesting. Is it on by default though? And only if touched by deactivated Redstone turns off and vise versa?
Allows weather to pass through it?
