you know, with 1.5 coming out, and the weather with it, also that it's believed that rain may fill up small holes, you can drain streets in your town and make cool sewer systems.
(man that was a run on sentence...)
That's actually a really cool idea. Instead of having pathways in the city made of stone or some other material, make them out of grates. Then the water would fall through them when it rains and you could make sewer systems out of them leading to the ocean. The only problem i have with that though is water flows infinitely, so the water flow would keep building up until it reached the grates. Then it would possibly overflow. :tongue.gif:
would be amazing for online if you could make it so like the ceramic ones actually made source blocks move, no more griefing because the grate would drain the liquid out
Pistons and drainage grates are not remotely the same thing. Pistons, as far as water control is concerned, are basically just a block that can be made to exist or stop existing. That makes them like floodgates, a useful thing to be certain. But that does not make them grates.
Grates let water through ALL THE TIME, just like a retracted piston. They also stop solid entities ALL THE TIME, just lock an extended piston. Can a piston allow a person to walk over it or stop a creeper from moving through it while water passes through? The same applies to the ability for this to filter items from entities. Another useful thing that pistons just can't do.
This applies vice-versa as well, by the way. Drainage grates are not floodgates. They do not open or close on command. The two can, however, be combined for some interesting effects (Controllable/flow grates? Yes).
im gonna make a mob trap with this mod :smile.gif: it will look something like this
[] []
[] []
[] = cactus =grate
and to get mobs into it i will have tributary rivers collecting mobs like the ones made by lukedude5 on youtube...ill upload a vid of it working on youtube when its done...p.s to author (this needs to be more than a mod...it should be IN minecraft)
also this is vertical not horazontal...otherwise it would not work...after the grate the mobs items go through it into a collection chamber below it....if anyone thinks this is a at all good idea tell me please :biggrin.gif:

life is not worth living if you arn't living it to its fullest.....in short, party in your free time, work in the time that calls for that and when you are bored of that get a girlfriend. works every time...
Exactly how?
The differences between pistons and grates is that pistons are redstone activated PISTONS. They essentially grow to become 2 blocks and presumably stop anything from passing when extended. Sure it can block water, but it doesn't do the one thing GRATES do, which is allow items (and water) to pass through without requiring redstone, and there are tons of people that can use grates for looks (pistons do not look like grate at all). Sure, some of the OP is obsolete (selectively blocking/allowing water to pass through), but that doesn't mean anything to the things that arn't, it just needs some maintenance.
Annoyed that people think Drainage Grates are just about Floodgates...
I think there will be a time when Notch makes Fences Water Permeable..once that happens, drainage gates will be much easier to program. ...but probably unneeded.

If you stack a Desert Temple on the top of a Jungle Temple which is on the top of two churches you get a megazord

Would that work, you think?
Your idea just got shot down.

See my post above. Please, read and consider before posting. At least state how the functions of a floodgate are the functions of a drainage grate.
