In the middle of making this right now (and I have it all figured out). The question is...
Do you want a v0.1 of the mod for the time being with just one of the versions of the drainage gate or do you want to wait for me to finish the mod completely (estimated time being 2-5 days)?
I was wondering if we could link redstone to these drains. Say giving us the ability to turn drain effect on and off.
IMPORTANT: I also remember something about Flood Gates having been an idea for Minecraft that hasn't been implemented yet, but RouvenT brought up the idea of having the Grates have an on and off function, letting in and out liquids/items. Which reminded me about the Flood Gates. RouvenT made a fine point that if both Grates and Flood Gates would be considered and implemented, that it would be more efficient to combine the two instead. Using Redstone as a means to turn them On (open) or Off (closed). Grates are by default set to 'ON', requiring nothing to turn them on to use them. Applying redstone, or any other source of a charge, will reset its ON/OFF state accordingly. Diagram below
Although its more likely that the default state is off. Next time read the first post before asking questions.
PS: the current vote is at 1600 vs 16 (and then the third vote which is irrelevant to this)
I think you misunderstood me. Firstly there was not a question mark therefore it was not a question at all. I intended to expand upon this idea further but failed to place my thoughts in words so I intended to edit it later. in regards the drains functionality. I can see how you could make that mistake though.
See my next upcoming post for more info as to what should have been posted there.
What will be the difference if any between these two types of Drains? Other then materials used and the look of the blocks, I don't see much of a difference.
Wood and stone presureplates are very similar but not completely the same with functionality. The wooden plate can be activated by an item while the stone plate cannot.
Perhaps in a similar way these two drains could have a slight difference. Both allowing water (or Lava) to pass but only one drain would allow for items to fall threw.
*I was going to suggest having the difference be based on its reaction to redstone.
- One would shut off the water as a reaction
-- the other would stop allowing items to pass without stopping the water as a reaction.
I have thought it though and didnt like the idea as much.
So now what do you think? Should they have a difference other then just appearances?
I love this idea! if notch implemented this, and some thing like a water door so when you activate a switch or button it lets water pass threw or holds water back.
Ok Hope Some1 sees this but in the comments i herd wooden grates heres an idea if you try to use this "wooden grate" with lava it will disrentgrate! or mabey this would work with the chremic gate Three dimonds for the "grate" idea! (pun intended)
First: Ceramic is traditionally a heat-resistant item. It is meant to be able to withstand heats that even metals melt at. Iron (even buckets) should melt when holding lava. If it was done properly, iron would melt on direct contact with lava, Ceramic would withstand it, and there would be a new, proper Ceramic container (bowl/bucket) that could carry lava, instead of the iron bucket.
Second: If a fluid is filtered in from the top, there should be internal workings to split the flow, effectively adding 1 to the flow distance. If it's a block, it should flow out the sides as well as straight through, even if gravity would then cause it to fall again, making it a "spreader" for purposes of gravity-based fluids (water and lava).

<Pluecherry777>: I still think its funny that in 5 months, a group of modders made a mod thats actually better than a game thats been around for 2 years...
I saw the pictures and now I don't even want to say I thought of it first. I even posted, but I can't "view your posts" due to the search thing being down.
Ah, additionally; typically grates are made to filter out things from liquids. How about the grate panels (the small ones, non-blocks) filter out everything, from items to mobs; While the larger ones are meant to only do a more general sifting, only blocking larger things like mobs from filtering through? I could actually see something like...
Where = grate block = thin grate = water = water flowing down into grate block instead of continuing past
The two-block corridor beneath is safe from mobs, but items filter through, land on the finer grate slab, and then sit there to be collected. Sort of like the drain trap in sinks.
Another thing I'd like to mention; grate blocks should break line of sight, so long as glass breaks line of sight. If a clear pane of glass can break line of sight, then a grate should as well. (note it's specifically mentioned as line of sight, not line of effect. If a skelly shot towards you when you stood in front of a grate, then you ran around behind it, it should still be permeable to the arrow).

=___= GHAST!
*Face palm*
I imagine grates work using a hinge, just a like a door, which is also capable of being "powered" by redstone circuitry.
