...guess i shouldn't be to concerned about iron costs. But im a bit more worried about others just having started off not having a whole warehouse full of iron blocks. *nods*
I remember when i first started off, iron wasn't something i could find very easily. And when i did, i already had a use for it on something else. And with it being used for so many different things... Thinking of newbs, just starting out, not having to worry about spending all their iron on just a couple grates for whatever use they'd like to use them for.
hmm.. but the stuff that you'd use them for kinda feels like 'later-game' kind of stuff.. Mob Traps, Lava falls, etc etc. By that time, you'd usually have a good bit of iron built up... however, after reading your idea Xuro about the lava+water fall. I would so use that as a 'starting off' method of escaping mobs that are chasing me that i haven't the means to fight off just yet. Would hurt, yes.. but much better then fighting off skelies and creepers with only a sword.

You have my support.
Not sure if this would be an better/worse, but how about the grate be one full block, allowing water to flow through from all sides?
It'll naturally want to flow downwards, and will, unless a block is in the way on the bottom. In which case it will try to spread.
Maybe I'm making this too complicated :biggrin.gif:
Now that you've mentioned having a liquid flowing from a side... hmm, now that complicates things a little, but does bring to light a very important flaw in my idea.
Having a full block version would make drainage usage cosmetically sound.. but for using grates for bridges would make them look very bulky instead of slim like i had hoped... So with that being a the case, i'll draw up a full block version and post it up on the OP as well ^^
Maybe you could make a full block version by crafting. Much like slabs, crafting grates would give you three, which you could then craft together to make a full block version. Like so:

maybe I'm not getting what the problem with water from the side and all, so perhaps this sounds odd, WHY, is this an issue?
if water flows toward a grate from a horizontal plane, and the grate is a 1/2 block that is at the end of the road.... OH i get why your concerned. Because of the blocks that defy physics? where a ladder can hold up water and signs can hold up water/lava, and half blocks stop water?
would it not be an easy task then to make the grate a block that lets fluids through? this would allow for umm... real? physics to play out.
The water flowing toward the grate would then go UNDER the grate, and fall to w/e distance, or is this an issue with flow blocks taking up a full block so it cant go under halfblocks/grates ?
@[email protected] I'm no programer, but I think water should be able to go under halfblocks as well :sad.gif:

how is using a lava fall in any sense a 'starting off' tactic? @_o :biggrin.gif:

It just being where you'd want the grate to appear sideways instead of seeing just the side of it. Don't mind me, im crazy to find a issue with something silly like this ^^
Also, Is it just me who finds lava early on? o.o (is being serious)

Oh! If gears are ever added into the game, you could make a box with these, some water and the gear in the middle.

just got back from my test, and here are the results for test 1
results will vary, I got sorta lucky in some places, like not falling into that lava >.<
after 30m of starting up a random world this is what i got (of stuff that's worthwhile)
1187 cobblestone
27 iron
12 gold
14 diamond
15 redstone dust
32 lapis lazuli dust (OMG THEY FIXED THE DROPS FROM LL BLOCKS!!!!)
3 of the iron count was on the pick axe,
4 of the diamond count was on the pick axe + shovel.
I refrained from mining excessive redstone to save time.
and finding LL blocks THAT was lucky ! @_o
so yah.
Iron is not hard to find.
also, I keep in mind a 'newb' wont actually LOOK for iron, but htf does a newb know how to make a grate/ implement it?
at least for survival mode, survival/getting stuff should take priority over aesthetics, only after you have secured your area and or w/e should ya be worrying bout plumbing :biggrin.gif:
but yeah, if we made EVERYTHING newb friendly, there'd be no challenge ( >.> cake <.<) (drool*)
also, I only found 1 lava pool, but that was around lv 10 ish, (almost fell into it >.<) surface lava pools are uncommon imo, i've only ever seen 1.
as for cosmetics, why not allow the half block grate to be placed either at the top, or the bottom of the side of the block you want?
then you could have grates as the side of a part of a road, and it would still be flush, and still work.......
OMG

THATS WHAT WE NEED!!!
Notch has GOT to give random weather!
like, snow, rain, sandstorm, gusty wind, hot Sun
snow - puts snow on the ground for the day
rain - randomly puts water source blocks around
sandstorm - sand piles up randomly in places (i like sand :biggrin.gif:)
gusty wind - makes moving in certain directions slower, like soul sand, or water :smile.gif:
hot Sun - any source block under sunlight, lowers the flow space by 1 or 2.
this would be freaking awesome.
sand would then not be afinite resource, (since it's used so much this is good)
snow would allow for snow blocks to be collectable in non arctic/tundra settings.
weather occurences may happen rarely, but still possible?
ugh, I think I just got off topic, my bad! :biggrin.gif: but all this is creative thinking right!?
also, what if STEEL was added into the game?
where you had to.. temper iron to make it stronger, then made steel grates? (you prob wouldnt like this cause it's less newb friendly :tongue.gif:)
But I could see this being less appealing to newer/more casual players, but STEEL could open up more possibilities :smile.gif:

OK Electrk, here is what i've put together with your idea in regards to how to go about crafting these grates.
where = half block grates
and = Full Block grates
[] [] []
[] [] [] = x 4
[]
this provides what i believe a good item-to-cost ratio, you'll see as to why next
To Craft the Full Blocks:
[] [] []
[] [] = x 1
[] []
2 iron ingots = 4 half grates
4 half grates = 2 Full Block Grates
so far this looks really fair. Ultimately, your getting 1 Full Block Grate for every 1 Iron Ingot
Before i go about adding this to the OP, what do you guys think??

but lets see....
Yeah, I think that's too cheap for it. D: (wai?)
I think the 2 iron ingots should give 2 half grates, and 4 half grates gives 1 full block grate. OR at most 6 half grates giving 2 full block grates.
the first - 1 full block grate would then be the equivalent of 4 iron ingots
the second - 1 full block grate's cost would then be the equivalent of 3 iron ingots.
though I think the second would be very lenient, as a full block grate would cost as much as a bucket...
It would allow for players to make it easier.
but 1 ingot per block? that seems excessivly cheap. IMO. I'm sure not everyone thinks this ^^
Iron is used in a lot of things, it is also very abundant when mining, 3rd to coal and stone >.>
most of them take more than 1 and are quite small at that... well... I just think that 1:1 is a bit much :tongue.gif:

I like the weather idea, but im sure Notch and his team have already thought about it considering they've been working a lot on the environment in MC. Not so sure how i'd like sandstorms... last thing id like is for my stuff to get covered in sand and have to go and clean it all up. Getting back on topic
I guess i am a bit biased towards these grates being easy to make, and not thinking about putting actual 'work' into the game. what about a 2:1 (iron ingot to full block grate) ratio?
where its 2 iron ingots to make 2 half grates, and 2 half grates to make 1 Full Block? lmao or am i still being a cheap'o? xD
actually, im not so concerned about costs.. that will ultimately be up to Notch n' Team if they do want to use this idea anyway lol. But as to put up something in the OP that makes things a little clearer, i'll edit in the 2:1 ratio as an example *nods*
Thanks Xuro for your valuable insight, id probably over 'easy' this whole idea if it wasn't for someone else's opinion.
