I swear I saw a video of someone displaying either a mod with something like these or a demonstration of how it would work, but I cannot for the life of me find it now. I distinctly recall at one point in the video the person hit a switch and an entire room lit up as the grates opened up, letting sunlight into the room. It looked amazing in practice, but I cannot seem to find it now. Does anyone know what I am talking about?
I feel like I am going insane. Is it possible I dreamed this video? I can't find it anywhere, I THOUGHT it was in this thread . . . maybe its a different suggested item I am thinking of . . . I swear they functioned as drains and looked like these iron grates though.
I hope this is added, it will open up a whole world of possibilities when it comes to traps, and things to make the game more convenient. there are soo many mechanisms that would be creatable were drainage gates to become available.
Actually I think you could just do this with Texture Packs.
Heres a trick to use. Make a texture pack that makes Wooden Pressure Plates Look like Grates and Rock ones look like Iron Greates. Make one block Transparent, Place them. Put the "Grates" over the invisible block.
Bewm you got a grate bridge that make clickidy noices :3

Except, you know, that wooden and stone push-pads use their respective texture. So unless you want to punch trees for grates, or mine in a massive grate world, it won't work.

I love this idea, it's a definite WANT.
Has someone already suggested this? (there are lots of pages, I skimmed them all looking, but didn't see):
Rather than have the drainage gate act as a flood gate simply if there is redstone nearby, I'd like to choose to craft a redstone-active flood gate out of drainage grates and redstone. Also I like the word "valve" for it:
= drainage grate (half)
= redstone
[] []
[] [] = valve
[] []
I think it should be more resource intensive to build a valve. (valve == flood gate)
This should also help optimize the liquid processing. The drainage grates being always treated like air is simpler to calculate than a block that could be solid or air depending on the state of something else, so lining an entire lake with grates isn't a performance issue when you're not trying to control water flow.
Have the mods that implemented this figured out a way to display the level and flow of water through the block that the grate occupies? It seems like that could be a challenge, if they are see-through like in the pictures.
I've already been in a situation where having even just the drainage grate would have been really nice. I had an underground cave-fort built on top of a really cool-looking natural lava-fall I found, and had to dig an uncomfortable ravine in the floor to catch water because I kept spilling it somewhere and ruining the lavafall.
Also we should have pipes:
[] [] []
to go with our valves!
I must disagree. This is a simple grate, not a pipe. In addition, grates would probably be used alone most of the time, making you suggestion useless.
Omg! this was one of my original thoughts back when I started playing Alpha! I'm so glad I didn't offer it, because you've done a MUCH better job at proposing it than I ever could have. I'm also glad that I wasn't the only one with this thought C:
This sounds like a grate idea. BWAWAWAWAWAWAWAWAWAWAWAWA! XD...... Actually, this would be a huge help in creating mob traps and cactus farms. Instead of just hoping that the object flows to the pick up spot or waiting for the object to flow to the end and tapping your foot in frustration for the 10 seconds it takes for the object to reach the pickup spot over 3 squares. This could catch any items that the enemies drop from a waterfall, allowing for quick object travel and 100% reliability that the object will reach the grate. At the same time, the water won't flood the room!
If there is one thing that this should have (I'm not sure if somebody has already suggested this but I'm not reading through over 300 posts to find out). If it is charged via redstone wiring or a direct input, it should allow objects to travel through it but not mobs. This will allow for even EASIER mob traps. The mob drowns in the glass water tank while standing on a wired grate. When they die, their drops fall through the grate and flow to the player.

I start out each morning with a nice, hot cup o' Minecraft!
This idea is totally awesome. I have been waiting for a sluice gate ever since I started Minecraft. And not just any sluice gate, but a redstone sluice gate.
I've always wanted to build a working hydroelectric dam, for some weird reason... Or a toggle-able waterfall...
...Plus, I have a few contraptions which require sluice gates. (Automatic farm, Water/lava wall protection (Esp. against PVP TNT cannons...), and more, including this crazy one, which is a water key (auto-reset, which requires sluice), quite complicated...)
The current ideas are quite good, but maybe also the ceramic/iron version doesn't allow items through, but the other one does? This would be a good idea, the difference akin to stone/wood pressure plates.
Plus, with Etho's compact water sensor, this could allow for quite awesome water timers.
P.S. You've been warned, you will now hear my little rant about the water key:
1. Player takes water out of infinite spring, places it down tube. Activates water sensor 7 blocks down, allows minecart booster to have it in the unlock one side of an AND gate.
2. Player jumps into minecart, toggling a stone pressure plate, activating booster unlock side 2 of the AND gate.
3. Player pushes button, which makes booster (if AND gate is on) activate, along with sluice gate if AND gate is on. This sluice is lava.
4. Lava falls from the sluice down, and destroys water as the player is riding away. Because the water recedes faster than lava, it shouldn't block any of the tube going down the 7 long hallway by making cobble. The 7 long hallway is to prevent any lava from reaching the sensor, breaking it.
5. Sluice closes from button and the AND gate locking. Complete reset.
...I'm sure it makes no sense to anybody but me... It's supposed to be a hidden key for activating minecart boosters, confusing the <Subject PvP enemy here>. It would also be real easy to hide.

After all, when you mix these three, you get a cannon builder.
There should be more of a difference between iron and ceramic grates, for instance items fall through ceramic but not liquids, world be awesome for mob traps:) and also since i just can wait any longer for this because its a AMAZING idea, could it be a mod until notch see's it?
hope notch implements it
thats even better!!

Iron and Ceramic Grates
something i thought about since i first started playing Minecraft.
a real picture of a drainage grate:
minecraft version i drew up:
Half Grates
And a Full Block Grates
Crafting Suggestion:
where = a half grate
[] [] []
[] [] [] = x 2
[]
and to craft a full block grate:
[] [] []
[] [] = x 1
[] []
Clay Bricks would be used in crafting Ceramic Grates.
Use and Purpose:
Oddly enough, they have a very practical use o.o
Liquids (water and lava) and items can pass through them.
- like dropped items, or blocks in item form.
The player and mobs cannot!
Falling blocks like sand and gravel will filter through by turning into item form when they touch a grate, and fall through accordingly. Very much like when they fall on a placed Torch
Shouldn't be a block mobs can see through, for the sake of not getting shot at by Skelies.
EDIT: half and full grate blocks will act as any solid block would to Boats.
Say you want, for whatever reason, a waterfall with a cave/home behind it. And you want to make a bridge that leads from the outside of the waterfall to the cave/home on the inside without having water going all over the place on the bridge. The Iron Grates will allow the water to just pass through the bridge and you can still walk on it without falling through as well.
Or say you have a trap, and you want to be able to safely collect the loot that drops from the mobs you've killed, but its not safe to go into the trap and collect. Items can fall through the Iron Grates for you to collect underneath without worry of being harmed by the mobs above!
Ever sick of your boats breaking after you try to climb out, rather it be in a dock you've made, or at any other shore? Want a cooler looking style of a dry dock instead of using dirt, sand, or stone? Grates could be your solution!
example:
where = you + in a boat
and = water flowing into a grate
you can just slide your boat in, and the grate will act like a stopper, and hold the boat in place. You can climb out without your boat shooting out from under you. And all you have to do to head back to sea, is turn around and push it back into the water, right click it just before it takes off on its own to climb back in. ^^
Just having read this, im sure some of you have already thought of other uses ^^
Many others already have! Read through some of the comments here, and you'll find a lot! :biggrin.gif:
Placement:
Kinda like half stone slabs, but are placed at the 'top' of a blocks space. Flush with the top surfaces of surrounding blocks. However, doesn't stack on themselves like stone slabs.
EDIT: Although the half grates will take up the top portion of a blocks space, they will act as an empty space from underneath, allowing you to walk under them, but will still block you from coming up through them.
As for the Full block Grates:
example in use: Where water is flowing from left to right, through a grate you can stand on.
[] [] [] [] [] [] [] []
[] [] [] [] [] [] [] []
[] [] [] [] [] [] []
[] [] []
[] [] []
Placement for these is pretty much just like any other block.
Other thoughts:
Note a 'grand' idea, or something completely out of this world that will change the face of Minecraft forever, but definitely a sound proposal. Just another crafting block, doesn't hold an irritation factor passed what the player does with it. The possibilities are limited, but not under appreciative.
As for the creative ones of us, can you imagine the decorative factor these can have in your structures? Like an underground molten forge with Iron Grate scaffolds passing by or through lava falls. Or a corridor floor paneling in what can look like a spaceship style design.

IMPORTANT: I also remember something about Flood Gates having been an idea for Minecraft that hasn't been implemented yet, but RouvenT brought up the idea of having the Grates have an on and off function, letting in and out liquids/items. Which reminded me about the Flood Gates. RouvenT made a fine point that if both Grates and Flood Gates would be considered and implemented, that it would be more efficient to combine the two instead. Using Redstone as a means to turn them On (open) or Off (closed). Grates are by default set to 'ON', requiring nothing to turn them on to use them. Applying redstone, or any other source of a charge, will reset its ON/OFF state accordingly. Diagram below.
example:
where = redstone wire charged
and = redstone wire uncharged
water flow is from left to right
ON
[] [] [] [] [] []
OFF
[] [] [] [] [] []
[] [] []
EDIT: This can be completely up to Notch n' Team to decide, but some others have suggested making Ceramic Grates always 'ON' and not effected by redstone or other devices. Thus bringing a little more difference between the two.
Hopefully you all will like this idea and not think of it as absolute crap. ^^ Thank you for your time!
Credits:
Sid Bowman and some others mentioned a Full Block version of the grates and having a liquid flow in from the sides which i hadn't even though about :biggrin.gif: So that's why those exist in this suggestion now.
Electrk brought up the concept with the crafting, and Xuro helped with flushing it out to its current state ^^
Xuro for quality control, Great Ideas and Uses!
raiu_tree for the Support Signature image and code, the Concept Art, and the concept of being able to walk under half blocks!
MechaMage for lots of awesome uses of grates!
Orion-Pyro for the Forum Icon, and Landmine for having me go and ask for it xD
If i've missed someone, please say so, im short on time with Work and all. So im not able to do as much as id like with this thread, but i wont let it die D:
Support:
If you guys want to help show everyone your support of our idea here, here's the signature code!
Since Get Satisfaction is where Notch n' Team look for what we think, just post a reply about what you think there, and hopefully if it gets popular enough, they'll notice it :biggrin.gif:
Definitely interested in this. As for materials, why not use cobble? Stone grates are possible.
