That design does cut down on the pigs somewhat and gets Most of the spiders (spiders are not so much a problem as when they hit the transport system they simply don't fit since they need an area two blocks wide and one block high to pass and are presented with a 1/1) because for whatever reason the creature AI (except for chickens) won't jump/swim if there is glass above them (a godsend when setting up traps tried a half dozen setups to kill things more efficiently before I found out about that). The third or fourth version of the initial test application of the Glass Beast used a similar secondary glass layer. Unfortunately there is not enough area with the flow and diminishing water to drown all the pigs before its pushed into an air pocket. Any setup that will allow water/items to flow will allow live pigs and verse vica (yeah I know backwards and butchered lol)
I will admit that I am by no means an expert when it comes to traps but that has been my experience through a half dozen or so full scale designs and probably twice as many test models.
And when I say musing about dry docks in no way doubt that one can fashioned an awesome dry dock but I am a Redstone junkie and if there is even the remotest chance I can wire a fully functional dry dock into a single lever, thats going to be the direction I go. I do know that there are ways to get water and lava blocks to react to Redstone input but it requires they be reset after every use, more of an apparent glitch than an intended feature.
Traps and drydocks are only two small examples of the potential that drainage/floodgates would represent.
They allow one to finally perfect several water based mechanics and more potentially in the future if water becomes more complex and in the present turn an existing and tedious glitch into a convenient feature.
P.S. Still shamelessly plugging for that filter collection block that captures items that would otherwise flow through a filter block. That the player can later access like a chest.
just relised. have a cave up high with that leading to a base out side. walk by it one day and itd be full of feathers. be like O_O *thought*Stupid Zombies*Thought*
Be even better if you combined it with the collapsable block idea. A collapsable block breaks itself and turns into raw materials when powered redstone, a redstone torch, or fire touches it. Usefull for pit traps until trap doors / 1x1 block doors are implemented.
I really think it'd be better if it was crafted like this,
[] [] [] But to make it better, it'd make about ... I dont know, 15 grates.
[] [] []
It should make 15 grates, 3 iron, its not really that hard.
I dont think newbs will have too much difficulty cause it they're ever mining for coal its very likely that they'll find nearby.
Besides the crafting, I think it would be awesome if Notch n' team let us use these, I get sick of jumping over my lava traps and eventually fall down and die.
I don't think I saw it in the OP but, what exactly is the benefit/disadvantage of using ceramic grates over iron grates? Or vise versa?
This. I don't really see any difference other than aesthetics.
As far as its gone, the OP put it in the hands of Mojang for when its implemented.
As far as responses go (as far as I kept up): Iron can open/close, while the material:grate ratio is increased for ceramic grates (like 4 bricks produce 8 grates, compared to 4 iron ingots producing 4 grates for example). Some people have stated one should be lava-proof while the other isn't (I've seen posts for either one being lava-proof).
On second thought they should have a default seting but be programable to let certain things flow through them.
